GROUND CONTROL
TO MAJOR TOM...
Chris Hadfield is a retired astronaut and the first Canadian to
walk in space. He had a 35-year career and went on many trips
into space. Before the end of his career, he was the commander
of the ISS (International Space Station).
Hadfield was born in Sarnia, Ontario in 1959. In 1992 he was
chosen to become one of four new Canadian astronauts out of a
total of 5,330 people. From 1996 to 2000, he was the chief
astronaut for the Canadian Space Agency. On 19th
December,
2012 he set off on his last trip into space, and spent five months
on the ISS.
During his time on the ISS, Hadfield used social media to show
people back on Earth what life was really like in space. He had
millions of followers and posted photos and videos while he was
on the ISS. He answered many questions from schoolchildren
about how astronauts sleep, eat and do everyday activities. He
was very popular because instead of just talking about activities,
he showed people everything through videos.
Hadfield also brought a guitar with him to the ISS and posted
videos of himself singing songs. He even made a music video
while in space, singing David Bowie’s Space Oddity with images
of the Earth in the background. 18,000,000 people watched it on
YouTube and it made him internationally famous.
After Hadfield retired in 2013, he moved back to Canada from the
USA as he had promised his wife. Today, the city airport in his
home town is called Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport and there are
two schools named after him, too. Hadfield is confident that one
day humans will travel to Mars, and he has told the media that he
wouldn’t miss the opportunity to go on a one-way trip to Mars.
1. Hadfield’s final trip into
space lasted five
months.
2. When Hadfield returned
to Earth, he used social
media to tell people
about his time on the
ISS.
3. Hadfield made a music
video with the help of
David Bowie while in
space.
4. Hadfield is now a
resident of the USA.
