The document describes the main product, a short experimental film called "P.S.Y.C.H.O.S" about three mental disorders, and two ancillary tasks - a film review and poster for the short film. The 5-minute film depicts depression, anorexia, and dissociative identity disorder through artistic interpretations using music. Both the review and poster were researched by looking at other examples online and were designed to attract an audience to watch the short film while also providing information about it. All three products fit into the psychological thriller genre and complement each other through consistent themes and imagery.
2. WHAT IS YOUR MAIN PRODUCT?
For my main product I created an experimental short film within the
psychological thriller genre. My film “P.S.Y.C.H.O.S (Please Say You Can
Help Our Souls)” is based on three different mental disorders being
shown in three separate acts. The mental disorders were Depression,
Anorexia Nervosa and Dissociative Identity Disorder.
My short film had to meet certain briefs:
• Must be approximately 5 minutes long
• Mustn’t follow a clear storyline
My Film
Each character suffers with a different mental disorder, and each disorder
is represented in an artistic way, using music to convey the emotions.
3. WHAT ARE YOUR TWO ANCILLARY TASKS?
Film Review
In order for me to do a film review,
I actually had to research them
and make myself familiar with
how to write. I started with
researching film reviews on the
internet, I came across the
sites Rotten Tomatoes and
IMDb.
Film Poster
Continuing on from the research I did for
my film review, I looked at film posters on
the website IMDb. In order for me to
create my own film poster, I needed to
look at other film posters.
4. EXISTING FILM POSTERS
One thing they all have in common is a main
character is shown, and there is a tagline. Also,
they all show the date they will be out.
5. CREATION OF MY FILM REVIEW
My film review follows a different layout than reviews I have seen before, I
did this because I wanted to create something different than what is
normally shown, and break conventions.
6. CREATION OF MY FILM POSTER
When creating my film poster, I had
chosen which image I wanted to use. But I
could not figure out which effect I wanted
to use. After asking people who would be
in my target audience I went with the
darker effect because it made the text
stand out more, and people in my
audience said that they thought it was
more intriguing and creative.
7. WHICH PRODUCT IS THE STRONGEST?
If I were to compare all three products, I would say that my short film is the
most effective because it allowed me to explore different ways of being
creative, and also explore issues that I was previously interested in in
more detail.
However, I also feel that both the film review and poster add more to the
film as these two elements are essential in the entire production.
8. WHAT ARE THE LINKS BETWEEN THE
PRODUCTS?
An obvious link is made between each product, using the same actor as the
main focus of each piece. In the review, I have used screencaps of each
act. This relates it to the short film as there is a clear connection. I have
connected the poster and the review by using the title of the short film
in both to clearly show what each product is about. Also, all three
products are very artistic and creative, with a slightly eccentric edge to
it.
9. WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE PRODUCTS?
The main task, my short film, is an artistic representation and commentary
on mental disorders. Within this film there are three acts, each an
interpretation of a different mental disorder. I used different music and
disorders in order to keep my audience entertained throughout, and to
also inform them more of each disorder.
My film posters main function is to draw in the audience, and intrigue them
enough to make them want to watch my short film.
Similar to my film poster, my review is meant to attract my audience and
make them want to watch the film. But the review goes more in depth
and tells the audience what the film is actually about. The review
accompanies the film and allows the audience to make a presumption
before they have seen it.
10. HOW DO YOUR PRODUCTS FIT INTO THE GENRE
OF PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER?
I made sure my film & poster fit into the genre of Psychological Thriller by
using technical elements of Camera, Sound, Mise En Scene & Lighting
Camera
Camera shots and angles
used to convey meaning
and emotion, a mix of mid
shots and close ups.
Mise En Scene
A simple background to keep
the character the main focus
of the piece so that we can
focus on their emotions.
Sound
The story is told through
music, rather than dialogue
to create a more artistic
approach to each mental
disorder.
Lighting
Natural lighting, a small budget
means no lighting equipment. The
light in the story comes from either
lights already in the room, or
lamposts.
11. OVERALL VIEW OF PRODUCTS
Looking at my short film, review and poster, I think that they all compliment
each other in a certain way.
All three show the same themes throughout and also fit into the same
genre, so they clearly reflect each other.
I feel that the two ancillary tasks enhance the overall effect of the short film
as they add to the impact of the issue and create a greater message,
whilst also maintaining a great amount of artistic ability & integrity.
