Television, movies, songs, and social media are the cultured lenses in which we view the world.
What we perceive through a screen can change where we stand on certain topics; for example,
gender messages and body images. Mass media not only reflects gender stereotypes but also plays
a role in changing them. Females used to be portrayed as less brave and more dependent. Now
there are strong, independent female characters like Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games
and intelligent, brave female characters like Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Like women's
changing positions in society, more aggressive and dominant females are being featured. Mass
media molds new stereotypes but not all the ideas that are communicated are positive. Mass media
is effective in teaching us what we "should" look like. Women should be thin. Men should be
muscular. The skinny and muscular ideals portrayed in advertising encourage men and women to
look a certain way. The depiction of the female ideal has helped shaped society's perspectives about
beauty. The media pushes you to "improve your body" by buying their products but soon the road to

According to Shearer, "62 percent of US adults get news on social media" (Gottfried and Shearer
2016). More than half of the adults in the United States receive their news from social media.
With more than half of adults relying on social media, it begs the question does society rely too
much on social media? Throughout recent years, society has invested more time in their phones,
which has made us less social. Social media has shaped people to lack personal, human
relationships. This leads to society becoming less social as a whole. Furthermore, there has been a

This because a problem when you have to put social media away and step out into the real world,
with real relationships. If people are too busy always acting tougher than they truly are, it is very
hard for them to establish connections with people. Larry Rosen talks about the lack of empathy in
the virtual world. Rosen states, "while empathy can be dispensed in the virtual world, it is only
one–sixth as effective in making the recipient feel socially supported compared with empathy
proffered in the real–world. A hug feels six times more supportive than an emoji" (Rosen). Empathy
is a big characteristic this world is lacking. Because everyone is so wrapped up in their phones,
they don't know how to develop real world connections. Overall, social media has influenced us to
