4. Context
DOOR, the database of Origin and registration, 134 of
protected designation of origins (PDO) and protected
geographical indications ( PGI) in the cathegory of oil, mainly
in Italy (49), Spain (34), Greece (29), France (9).
Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 of the European Parliament
and Council laying down the principles and requirements of
food law, article 18, introduces for the first time horizontally,
for all food businesses and feed, the requirement to have
from 1 January 2005 a system of traceability "of food, feed,
animals for food production and any other substances to be
incorporated into a food or feed, or is likely to be. "
5. Why Gest-Oli is for me?
• It is expected to get a final open and scalable system that
can be easily adaptable to all agri-food sectors with
traceability requierements
• The outcome of the work can be exported to other oil
producing regions.
6. PDO “ Oli de Mallorca”
• 1450 hectares in 2008/2009
• 118 217 liters of oil
• 11 bottlers
• 400 olive producers.
7. PDO “ Oli de MAllorca”
For the future gradual increase oil export to national and
international level.
In 2002, the Protected Denomination of Origin “Oli de
Mallorca” forces, according to the regulation of oil producing
companies and oil producers to maintain a complete set of
records with the aim to allow both the regulatory council of
oil as well as the regional administration, verification of
compliance with all requirements of relevant regulations for
obtaining the PDO Label.
8. Trational procedure of Traceability
• Control done on a set of books completed by the agents
of production must be completed.
• The data to fill in the books and procedures are often the
same, which involves performing the same work several
times and possible inconsistencies in the data from failed.
• The process is manual and in situ, no access to books
until they physically come to the mills.
• This means that the conduct of these inspections is too
slow, thus damaging both for firms and institutions
inspectors.
9. What ICT can bring to this procedure?
• One and only tool to manage easily and integrated across
the oil production process
• Interrelating with all stakeholders
• Facilitating the registration procedures
• Optimizing all the procedures with the agencies
responsible for the statements necessary to comply with
current legislation
• Guarantee in quality checks
• Offering a rapid response in case of health alert.
10. Objectives of Gest OLI Tool
• Developing and implementing all in one:
• Application for the management of oil production
process.
• A module to control the olive harvest.
• An electronic process module with the controlling
entities.
• An electronic card system based on RFID (Radio
Frequency Identification) to facilitate the processes of
buying and selling of olive.
• A digital signature system that gives legal certainty to
the process.
11. Benefits
• Incentive the use of ICT, specifically the Internet and
local networks in the field of oil producing companies
and oil.
• Encouraging also the use of ICT solutions, such as
the electronic card
• To manage the sale and purchase and sales
processes and inventory online.
12. Who are the beneficiaries?
• Olive producers
the use of RFID card
system allows a more fluid
relationship, improving their
processes of buying and
selling, integrating these
two groups
14. Who are the beneficiaries?
• The regulatory
council and public
administration
They have immediate
access to production
data, streamlining the
various quality control
procedures and enabling
a rapid response in case
of health alert.
15. Conclusions
• A total control over the production process of the oil with
appellation of origin Oli de Mallorca
• A record of the actions they perform.
• In real-time control over the oil and the possibility of
providing more information to the final consumer to
ensure the quality of the product and more security.
• Administrative ease and control to the stakeholders thus
improving productivity and efficiency of the production
process.
