The document summarizes the planning and research done for a student music video project called "The Big Tree". It discusses researching the work of artist Travi$ Scott for inspiration. Location scouting was done to find an outdoor area surrounded by trees. Props, costumes, and a storyboard were developed. An animatic was created to plan shots synchronized to the music. Cast availability was scheduled for the full shoot day. Evaluation found planning worked well though more shots could have been filmed if time allowed.
2. • Our group’s idea was influenced by French
Dub
• For example Daft Punk
• This enabled me to think about how a star
image is used to represent a dance youth
culture:
3. My Research
• As a group we researched into the art of
Travi$ Scott who is a trap/Rap artist. His
music video upper Echelon was a great
inspiration behind the Big Tree’s video.

• Individually I did extensive
research into other genre types
just in case we were going to use
a different type of song instead of
a French-dub song. I looked at
reggae, trap and dubstep.
4. • After we came up with our ideas and decided which one we were going to
do, the group and I sat together and developed our storyboard and
timeline for the Big Tree. We did this so as to simplify our work for the
shoot day. This enabled us to visualise all the shots we had in mind and in
actuality it helped us when the day came.
6. We needed research into Conventions
and real media texts
• The video is expected to show
elements of darkness with the street
goth costume outfits for each of our
characters playing this role.

Echelon by Travi$ Scott
7. In summary what did I learn about the
research of music video. How did this
inform the concept that I designed
• I was able to learn from my research new techniques in getting the
desired target audience. I learnt what ways to design our set and style our
characters. Also more importantly I learnt about the effectiveness of
different shots and how essential shots can be in videos depending on the
part of the song. I used all the knowledge gained to help create a
successful performance/narrative video which possessed a well designed
set and well costumed actors/performers.
8. What Research into Location, Props,
Costume & set design
• The group and I spent several days/weeks
researching on the internet, trying to find
places that we could use for our music
video as we needed somewhere outdoors
and surrounded by trees. We found a
place on the internet and decided to go
and check it out!
• The group and I were pleased with the
location and decided it would be perfectly
ideal for us to use the venue on our shoot
day sow e spoke to the owners and
discussed the availability of their
resources and any restrictions we would
have on the day.
• The group and I also developed a props list
consisting of every single item we would require
on the day of the shoot. We realised we would
be able to get some at the location for example
the chairs, however we needed to get chains,
baseball bats, fake money and bottles.
9. This is the sort of set we wanted for the video and so we were going to design
our set with the props we had in order to achieve this, which we did.
10. Storyboarding/ Animatic
• The storyboard was to some extent what we
wanted our video to look like however cutting
it into different pieces to form an animatic
that can be played along with the track made
everything easier for the group. Below is the
link to the animatic

11. Recording our plans
• It enables me to create a prototype so that I
can envisage the final product prior to when
the production begins, also it enables me to
make more informed decisions during
production. Also we could make changes
along the way so we need to keep a record of
this.
12. Provide two examples of planning
which was important to your shoot
All of the characters involved in the
Big Tree music video had to be
present throughout the day since we
were filming on location and most
our shots had more than one of
them in it so basically each of them
had a whole day scheduled for
shooting.
The cast list and roles can be seen on
the right
Cast members
• Romany: main performer
• Etienne: background actor
• Damini: Boxing trainer
• Ali.D: Background actor
• Ali.V: Boxer
• Luke: Background actor
• Joe: Walks through intro
• James : Guard
• Jackie: Walks through intro
• Gabriel: Background actor
13. Evaluation
• Surprisingly, everything we planned on putting
together in place for the shoot day worked out
fine. All of the characters were available although
we made a few changes a few days before the
day due to minor misunderstandings between
the group and some of the characters. The shoot
would’ve been better if we had more time on our
hands to film more shots but we still had a
sufficient amount regardless. The group was a bit
short on more ideas for shots so that would be
an area for development.
