This documentary is way too long for my time that I have to work
with but some of the contexts and techniques it uses are really
good and useful for me to do with my video. At the start it has a
intro that is specific to the topic that is going to be mentioned so it
works and I really want an intro with my video which I will have to
make very experimental. The whole video is shot with him set to
the left and then some arcade machines to the right, this is done
so that you understand the whole concept of the video and the
object are backing it up nicely, it is also nice to be able to focus on
something else rather than have one thing take up the entire
screen. This entire video is based on observations
and experimentation on theories which is one of the major
characteristics of factual documentaries. It is also a medium shot
because otherwise then we would not be focused on what the
person is saying. The main character that is talking is a celebrity
comedian and using a celebrity works in your favour when making
a documentary because it brings in that celebrity's audience of
course though I can not do this because it is only a college
project, however I could use myself or somebody stood talking
but I like narration better. There is not really any statistical
information that is shown on the screen but these are a good
characteristic to use in making a factual video. This documentary
uses existing clips of video games and this shows off the factual
information that is being discussed or narrated over. I am going to
use clips and images that already exist in my video. The audience
for this documentary would be older teens to young adults and I
think that it portrays this audience across really well.
The entire background keeps changing as well as his
position on screen and this just mixes the video up a bit
and keeps it interesting instead of staring at the same
image for ages. This video also uses interviews with
celebrities. The interviews are good to get peoples
opinions and it adds other perspectives to your film. The
video in general uses a lot of darker colours and this
really relates to the theme of the topic in the video which
gives the whole video consistency and allows it too run
smoothly. As the video is going on it plays some really
simple music in the background which balances out
evenly with the sound of the narration, the music is
simple because it is easy to add in and doesn’t drown out
or draw your attention away from the video. The video
doesn’t have any sounds though. The clips are well
edited together and it doesn’t jump suddenly without the
audience not knowing what's going on.

This video uses a very different style which is half animation
and it is a style that works for this genre or topic of video. The
whole video is simplistic and short and this makes it easy in
supplying the point across to the audience. The different part
of frame all move slightly and this just adds so much more on
to the video and is such a good technique and thing to do
which I will definitely be using in the future when I make
something that requires it. The main colour that is used Is
brown through the entire video. Brown is the colour of earth,
wood, stone and home, it is a natural, neutral colour that is
typically associated with the seasons of fall and winter so it
relates to the actual video because some dogs are related to
these seasons. All of the documentary video looks extremely
experimental for the statistic facts of the video. The title on
the video Is kept rather short which is simple and makes it
easy to understand what you are in store for. With the art
style of this video I would say that it is for the younger
generation and it is educational for them to do learning. This
video doesn’t use any form of music in it however it does use
the odd sound effect of a dog or a pop up when an important
piece of information pops up on the screen. The entire video
is consistent and flows smoothly as it does not divert of
course.
The video uses really easy images and examples to
convey the point across to the audience with ease. It is
also animated and put together rather well, it runs in a
chronological order and it runs rather smoothly. In this
video there is no qualitive research but it still works as a
factual piece. The only thing I don’t like about this video
is that it doesn’t change it up and sticks to the same
theme which is fine because it is short also it doesn’t
include really any statistical data in the video or
anything personal that the audience can relate too.

This video uses good editing in putting all the background images in a slideshow fashion as he talks in narration over the top
of this. This is done because it makes the video so much better and it tells the story in two different ways, by narration and
motion. The images scroll in good time with the general talk but I feel as if the voice is just a little monotone almost like he is
not interested and just reading it blankly. The video doesn’t have any sound effects or any other sound in general which
makes it just not seem as great and a little boring when you get 20 seconds in to the video. The reason why I chose this
documentary is because it uses some fantastic editing which I would like to convey across in to my documentary. This is
almost a story which is told with a beginning, middle and end. This I feel in a video would be boring but since this is a
documentary I think it should stick to the general structure and order of things to make sense. The video uses clips from
different eras and this helps get the point across but it also uses two different styles of video and places them together rather
smoothly like a story through history which I would really like to carry something like this forward into my video. I don’t really
want to do a video like this overall though. The whole video is well critically analyzed meaning that in their deliverance they do
not divert off. The logo that is created for the video is simple and conveys across the title of the video greatly. This video uses
statistics in it too back up the factual data that is being said, this is good too do obviously in factual research. At the end of the
video it includes a technique where an image is repeated like its split down the middle and distorted this is interesting and
adds variety towards the video its just a bad idea in my opinion too include all of the best image work at the end of the video, I
believe it should be mixed around. Also at the end there is Earth which is being held inside somebody's hand, this is a
interesting technique and I believe that I should look into it however it probably will not come in my use for the documentary.
The video uses pictures from different eras throughout history and I
believe that this is a prenominal idea because then it shows that its
really getting behind the facts of the project. This video is too long
and doesn’t really get to the point I think that its just facts being
blatantly read from a piece of paper. The consistency of the video is
great and it does not divert off however I feel the audience will get
bored rather quickly.

This video has no intro and it starts off with a collection of images of the topic that is going to be talked about and this is briefly
mentioned in the narration over. The images are placed everywhere like a mood board but it is telling a story which is a nice
way too perceive art/photos. This video is entirely made up of interviews which I think is not a great way too do a documentary
but it works for this video because it is about one specific person. This video could have been made much shorter and more
interesting because I felt it didn’t have this factor, some of the interviews seemed unnecessary and it repeated the same
information over. This video doesn’t need to follow an order because it is a bunch of interview clips which are edited together,
they are however edited well and it looks professional. It should describe at the beginning of the video what the story is or even
in the title because it doesn’t really give you anything it just jumps straight into it, I should not follow this as an example. The
quality of the video is very basic and is just shot at peoples homes with medium shots and normal backgrounds, using people
places is not great on a video in my opinion because it gives too much other stuff to focus on so it should either be blurred out
or I think that it should be shot at a white or green screen background. It has music with the introduction which is always a great
way to head on with a title sequence, it allows the audience to experience other ways of information and moods than just talking
or images.
I like the effect at the beginning of the video
where the screen lights up the title from the top
and then it looks like that it has a snowing effect
on the screen. The snowing effect is maybe
something that I am considering placing on the
intro of my video to spice it up and make it that
much better.
6. Research summary
• It is very hard to differentiate and decide what to finish with but all of these existing products were
of great use to me and I can now move forward into generating some different ideas for my video.
I don’t know what I want too do yet which is why these videos are so different of course I watched
more for ideas but these are the ones I decided to analyse to gather decent information that will
help in the long run. My favourite video was the one of the dogs so I will definitely choose that
topic as one of my ideas the other ones will be completely different but I will do similar techniques
and editing which is shown in the other clips. Within the documentary I will use darker colours for
my topic because I feel it will be more mysterious and intriguing for the audience just like the video
game documentary used. I have decided that I will probably carry forward the idea of using
narration over images and then maybe a quick interview to summarise up the video, the narration
idea came from dog history and I think that an interview will just really seal the deal on a video
and finish it for the better. I will keep the title of the video short and easy to understand/read. As
well as creating a logo for my video and an introduction that uses sound effects or my own little
musical introduction. Introductions seem smart to define a video or series to single it out just like
how the video game uses pixel animations with sound effects over the top. I would like too do
some camera technique maybe including distortion or repetition and this will be good for practice
as well as the video.
8. Ideas• My first idea that I have thought of is an idea about animals I have chosen this topic because I am interested in it and I think
it wont be hard to research and make up an idea. This is very vague and I don’t know exactly what animals to do but the best
outcome ones would be easy accessible animals such as dogs, dogs are a little simple of a video to do though and I cant get
much on them since a lot of content has already been done. So one of the best ways to go about it would be a slice of life
video, this could be interesting and I could do some cool video effects.
This is a great video which I really enjoyed
to watch and I can base this idea around
this.
I could make it really factual but add in-
formalness in their to not bore the audience.
I will have to use the style of images as the
background then and use effects on them almost
to make it look like a PowerPoint presentation- I
feel this will be rather boring however so I will
have to change it up.
Effects I can use: Zooms
Fades
Dissolves
Slide
Parallax
Think about a subject you could write about, a design style you could work in and why you would want to do it.
Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include?
Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
