THE SILENT WAY
LEARNING
O Caleb Gattegno, the creator of the Silent Way.
O It’s a methodology of teaching language based on the
idea that teachers should be as silent as possible
during a class but learners should be encouraged to
speak as much as possible.
The Goal
O The general goal of the Silent Way is to help
beginning-level students gain
basic fluency in the target language,
The silent way
THREE BASIC PRINCIPLES
1) The learner needs to discover or create.
2) Learning is made easier by the use of
physical objects such as Cuisenaire rods.
3) Learning is made easier by problem-solving
using the target language.
FEATURES
O Translation and rote repetition are avoided.
O The language is usually practiced in
meaningful contexts.
O Evaluation is carried out by observation.
O The teacher may never set a formal test.
O Use of material to elicit and practice language.
O Teachers should concentrate on how students learn,
not on how to teach.
O Imitation and drill are not used.
O Learning consists of trial and error, deliberate
experimentation, suspending judgments, and revising
conclusions
O Learners draw on everything that they already know,
especially their native language.
O The teacher must not interfere with the learning
process.
TEACHER’S ROLE
O Monitoring the students' efforts,
performance and moderating the class.
O Encouraging the students to have an active
role in learning the language.
O Focusing the students' attention, and
providing exercises to help them develop
language facility.
STUDENT’S ROLE
O Learners make their own generalizations.
O Their own conclusions.
O They formulate the rules, they need.
O They are expected to become independent,
autonomous and responsible.
O Pronunciation is seen as fundamental;
beginning students start their study with
pronunciation, and much time is spent
practicing it each lesson.

  • 2. THE SILENT WAY LEARNING O Caleb Gattegno, the creator of the Silent Way. O It’s a methodology of teaching language based on the idea that teachers should be as silent as possible during a class but learners should be encouraged to speak as much as possible.
  • 3. The Goal O The general goal of the Silent Way is to help beginning-level students gain basic fluency in the target language,
  • 5. THREE BASIC PRINCIPLES 1) The learner needs to discover or create. 2) Learning is made easier by the use of physical objects such as Cuisenaire rods. 3) Learning is made easier by problem-solving using the target language.
  • 6. FEATURES O Translation and rote repetition are avoided. O The language is usually practiced in meaningful contexts. O Evaluation is carried out by observation. O The teacher may never set a formal test. O Use of material to elicit and practice language.
  • 7. O Teachers should concentrate on how students learn, not on how to teach. O Imitation and drill are not used. O Learning consists of trial and error, deliberate experimentation, suspending judgments, and revising conclusions O Learners draw on everything that they already know, especially their native language. O The teacher must not interfere with the learning process.

  • 9. TEACHER’S ROLE O Monitoring the students' efforts, performance and moderating the class. O Encouraging the students to have an active role in learning the language. O Focusing the students' attention, and providing exercises to help them develop language facility.
  • 10. STUDENT’S ROLE O Learners make their own generalizations. O Their own conclusions. O They formulate the rules, they need. O They are expected to become independent, autonomous and responsible.
  • 11. O Pronunciation is seen as fundamental; beginning students start their study with pronunciation, and much time is spent practicing it each lesson.
