Summary:
The collection consists of video materials collected as dissertation research. Most of the footage is from rap and ragga
competitions in the city of Blantyre, though the earliest tapes feature a competition in Mzuzu and informal performance in Nkhata
Bay. There is some footage of a recording session in Blantyre, a hip hop radio show, and a rehearsal session by one group in the
neighborhood of Chilobwe (Blantyre). Some lyrics are sung in languages other than English, though much of the lyrical content is
unintelligible due to distorted sound from overloaded PA systems and on-camera microphone. Most conversation or discussion is in
English.

biographical information on the interviewees and performers. Additional annotations for recordings are included on the
Ethnomusicological Video for Instruction and Analysis Digital Archive (EVIA-DA) website.
520 Recordings include interviews with Chewa, Tumbuka, and Tonga performers as well as musical performances.
Much of the footage consists of rap and ragga competitions in the city of Blantyre, though the earliest tapes feature a
competition in Mzuzu and informal performances in Nkhata Bay. Additional footage consists of a recording session in
Blantyre, a hip-hop radio show, and a group rehearsal session in the neighborhood of Chilobwe (Blantyre). Material recorded
as part of John Fenn's dissertation, which focuses on musical culture, identity, cultural performances, social practices of
music, and the transcultural movement in Malawi in relation to performance theory.
