Extremadura and it is
the capital of
Extremadura.
5. CLIMATE
Merida has a
Mediterranean climate
with Atlantic influences,
due to the proximity of the
Portuguese coast. The
winters are mild, with
minimum rarely below 0
°C (32 °F), and summers
are hot with maximum
temperatures occasionally
exceeding 40 °C (104 °F).
7. FEAST
The most important
feast of Mérida is
the feast of
September, the
festival of summer,
The feast of
Gypsies, feast of
Santa Eulalia.
8. ECONOMY
The most important
service of the Merida´s
economy is the Sector
of Service, the turist
from all parts of the
world, industrial
activity because
Mérida has a lot of
industries and big
shop. In 2008 was
inagurate the IFEME,
10. THE ROMAN BRIDGE
The Roman bridge over the
Guadiana River at Mérida,
Spain. It is the longest
surviving bridge from
ancient times, having once
featured an estimated overall
length of 755 m with 62
spans. Today, there are 60
spans (three of which are
buried on the southern bank)
on a length of 721 m between
the abutments. Including the
approaches, the structure
totals 790 m.
11. THE ROMAN FORUM
The Roman Forum is an
archaeological area in Mérida,
Spain. It was the main public
area of the Roman city of
Emerita Augusta, founded in
25 BC by Emperor Augustus.
The city had another forum,
the Provincial Forum, built in
50 AD. Together with the
other archaeological sites of
the city, it was inscribed in
the UNESCO World Heritage
List in 1993.
12. CIRCUS MAXIMUS
The Circus Maximus is a Roman
hippodrome in Mérida, Spain.
Used for chariot racing, it was
modelled on the Circus
Maximus in Rome and other
circus buildings throughout
the empire. Measuring more
than 400 m in length and 30 m
of width, it is one of the best
preserved examples of the
Roman circus.
13. AMPHITHEATRE OF MÉRIDA
The Amphitheatre of
Merida, was built in the
roman colony of Emerita
Augusta, which was
founded in 25 B.C. by
Octavius Augustus,
emeritus soldiers
discharged from the
Roman army, two
veteran legions of the
Cantabrian Wars: Legio
V Alaudae and Legio X
14. ROMAN THEATRE
The Roman Theatre of
Mérida is a
construction promoted
by the consul
Vipsanius Agrippa in
the Roman city of
Emerita Augusta,
capital of Lusitania
(current Mérida, Spain).
It was constructed in
the years 16 and 15 BC.
