AUTHOR: Neil Leach
In this reading, we know Jacquer Derrida, he trying to saying that theory and practice should not be
separate because a self-explanatory architecture gives information on what inherent in itself. He
emphasize that that architecture should not be just creating building with practice but also with
thinking such as concept, representation and value. He say that, “a path which does not have to
discovered but to created”. On other hand, He trying to say thinking is very important in architecture.
He feel if we didn’t thinking when doing architecture that mean we are trap ourselves in a labyrinth
that with no way out. He think “thinking” is infinity which allow the diversity of architectural to happen.”
Undiscovered way of thinking belonging to the architectural moment, to desire, to creation”, say be
JD.
I agree that Jacques Derrida that theory and practice should not be separate because theory is what
let our designed building have its own value. By taking modern architecture as example, modern
architecture is a theory and still practice until in this century. It have its own meaning, value and
characteristic that make those building have it own individuality. JD keep emphasize this is because
of the abuse of modern architecture in western country at that period.
I agree on the thinking is essential and infinity. Thinking is what make us moving forward and make
us have our own identity. For example, the thinking of modern architecture is already no suitable in
new circumstance. We need to rethink ourselves to create something suitable to replace it. When we
thinking to solve that problem, we are thinking something new to solve the problem.
In the nutshell, JD got his own thought on how to move architecture to a new stage and his thought
already make a certain impact toward architecture.
