Health Promotion and Disease Prevention for 12th grade students
Standards of Learning
Objective
Describe the transmission, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of communicable, noncommunicable and sexually transmitted diseases.
List of Materials
Review vocabulary of communicable disease, non-communicable disease, pathogens, diabetes,
asthma, hypertension, hepatitis, immunity, vaccine, STI, HIV/AIDS
List and define the types of pathogens that cause communicable
Describe how a person can protect himself/herself against the spread of pathogens.
Differentiate the symptoms of the common cold, allergies and the flu.
Identify modes of transmission, signs and symptoms and treatment of STIs.
Discuss healthy behaviors for avoiding STIs.
Students will work in groups of 4 creating a public service announcement about how to prevent
communicable and non-communicable disease.

Each student will have a journal which they can account for what they have done each day.

Suggested Activities and Experiences:
Describe how environment and personal health are interrelated.
Describe how genetics and family history can impact personal health.
Analyze the relationship between access to health care and health status.
Discuss how advertisements (rhymes, jingles) can influence individuals to purchase certain
products. Students will be placed in groups to create their own rhymes and jingles
advertisements.
Evaluate hereditary factors using a personal health risk assessment tool.

Demonstrate the ability to access school and community health services for self and others.
Analyze the cost and accessibility of health care services.
Analyze situations requiring professional health services.
Evaluate the accuracy and usefulness of health information and products.
Students will prepare a report identifying reasons for participating or reasons for not
participating in certain lifelong physical activities.

Analyze the role of individual responsibility for enhancing health.
Evaluate personal health assessment tools to determine strategies for health enhancement and
risk reduction.
Analyze the short-term and long-term consequences of safe, risky and harmful behaviors.
Develop ways to recognize, avoid, or change situations that threaten the safety of self and others.
Develop injury prevention and response strategies including first aid for personal, family, and
community health.
Create a healthcare code of ethics for students.

Suggested Activities and Experiences:
Analyze how cultural diversity enriches and challenges health behaviors.
Evaluate the effect of media and other factors on personal, family, and community health.
Evaluate the impact of technology on personal, family, and community health.
Create a skit to demonstrate ways of handling abuse (i.e., sexual harassment, bullying, hazing,
fighting, and hate crimes).
Have students discuss statistics on other cultures and how it relates to disease (i.e., eating habits,
physical activity, doctor visits, availability of health services, etc.). Have students compare the
statistics on other cultures to the United States.
Each student will write a letter to your classmates encouraging them to avoid interferences of
negative outside influences.
