Reflective Essay About My Family
Everyone has a story of who they are and how they came to be. We all grow up wanting the
perfect family, the perfect parents, perfect house, perfect siblings, and to top it off, the white picket
fence that surrounds the house. Then life sets in and you realize that life is not all rainbows and
unicorns. The people in our life and the environment that we grow up in, is what shapes us to the
person we are today. Factors that influence how we are as a person are our family, parents, and
society. I come from a family that is hard to describe. We all get along and know when it is time to
unite as a family but at the same time the moment someone disagrees with one another, sides are
chosen and it takes forever for us to make up. My family has...show more content...
My dad was a great dad if he was not under the influence, but if he was under the influence he was
very abusive, physically and emotionally. My mother on the other hand, wants nothing but for me
to prosper in life and be happy. If I were to describe my mom with one word it would be, fighter.
Everything my mother does is for the benefit of my brother and I. My mother has influenced me in
many ways. She has taught me how to stand up for myself, to not be afraid of things that may
frighten me, not to listen to what others have to say about me because in the long run, what I think
about myself is all that matters. My mother is my biggest influencer and supporter and I will be
forever grateful that I have such a great mom.
Society today is a huge influential part in everyone's life. Others may say that they are their own
person and that no one has affected who they are as a person because they are, "their own
person," but society affects everyone to what they wear, what music they listen to, how they
behave, and many other things. Society has influenced me to stand up for others and to be a voice
for those who are too scared to share theirs. I see all over the news and social media, all the hate
that goes on in the world just because someone is a little different then them. Society has also
influenced the clothes I wear and music I listen

Essay on My Family's Ancestry
Gathering research about my family and its history turned out to be an interesting and insightful
opportunity, through which I learned much more than I expected. When I started this project, I
knew that I would not be able to find as much useful information on the Internet as some of my
peers. In effect, I realized that I would have to rely on other primary resources such as my parents
and grandparents to reveal the story of my ancestry to me. After I had interviewed them, my family
history became much clearer to me. More than 2 millennia ago, around the 3rd century BC, a group
of Tamil–speaking people from present–day South India migrated to the nearby island of Sri Lanka.
Among these people, known today as "Sri Lankan Tamils", are my...show more content...
The Peninsula has a hot, monsoonal tropical climate characterized by a dry season from February
to October and a wet season from October to January. Because of the monsoons, the region is
humid and averages three feet of rain each year, which is relatively low compared to the rest of the
island. The climate of the region allows for many crops to be grown including many varieties of
fruits and vegetables.
While interviewing my parents and grandparents, I learned about many customs and aspects of
the Sri Lankan Tamil culture. Sri Lankan Tamils are devotees of the Shaiva sect of Hinduism,
mainly worshipping the lord Shiva. The three main cultural festivals celebrated in the area are
Thai Pongal (beginning of the harvest), Chittrai Pongal (Tamil New Year), and Deepavali (Hindu
Festival of Lights). In addition, pujas (religious rituals) are performed for different occasions, such
as the death day of an ancestor or the celebration of a certain Hindu deity. It was also a custom to
ask the village astrologer for advice on certain decisions, such as the name of a newborn child.
Paternal Great–Grandparents In the early 1900's, Kadirasaipillai and Vairavipillai Kandappar, my
paternal grandmother's parents, were born in the village of Puloly, Northern Province, Sri Lanka.
They were both born into families of the Vellalar caste of Tamil society and went to school at Puttalai
Vidhyalayam, the only schooling option

My Day With My Family
I believe that I feel the most comfortable when I am home with my family. Any activity we do
together is amazing. Whether it's watching a movie together, having dinner, or having something
to talk about. There is always a time of the day where we just have a good laugh about something
that happened throughout the day. I know my family will always be there for me and I will do
the same for them. I believe that I am blessed to have such a loving, caring, and compassionate
family. I believe when times are tough, my family is my true comfort. Even if it's the smallest
thing like a headache or stomachache I feel better with just my mom doing anything for me to
feel better. I don't need medicine to heal the smallest pains; all I need is my family's love. I've
never looked at another family and thought, "wow they have an amazing relationship, i am
jealous". Sometimes I do the opposite because I never had thought wrong about my family even
when we're aggravated sometimes. I remember during the summer we would have a cookout
every single Saturday and Sunday. We would all get together and have my dads "special asadas".
Which are a special steak well done with allot of lime and spices. We would sit there for hours eating
and having a beer. We would call close friends that we even call family. I believe there is no perfect
life or perfect family. I believe my family will overcome anything that causes pain or misery. I
believe that we are in full control of our own wellness, both

The Word Family Essay
The word family is such a perplexing and tricky topic to define and describe. That's because of
how many ways a single person can explain it. Nowadays, there are so many arguments about what
a family actually is. Is a family considered to be made up of a heterosexual married couple, and that
has two kids? Well, that 's what Brian Powell, author of Changing Counts, Counting Change: Toward
a More Inclusive Definition of Family, found when he explored the web in search of what a family
was.
I Googled "family" and looked at its pictorial representations. The images presented a group of
close–knit and happy people, but if one looks closer at these pictures, one will also notice that
these groups almost always are made up of what appear to be a father, a mother, and their children
(most often two children: an older boy and his younger sister). These pictures typify what Canadian
sociologist Dorothy Smith (1993) coined as the Standard North American Family (SNAF)–which
strongly privileges heterosexual married households and, in particular, those that include children
and those in which women and men assume traditional gender roles. The SNAF often is portrayed
as "the family" and the gold standard by which other family arrangements are evaluated–often as
"lesser" families or not as families at all. These other family arrangements–which are nearly invisible
in the aforementioned Google images–include biracial families, single–parent families, adoptive
families, childless families,

Essay about My Family Heritage
My Family Heritage
Family Defined
The word family has changed so much in the past century. A family back in the 1950's was probably
considered a husband, wife, and one or more children. Times have changed and families have
become much different. The Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others book defines family
as a, "Unit made up of any number of persons who live in relationship with one another over time
in a common living space who are usually, but not always, united by marriage and kinship" (Beebe,
Beebe & Redmond, 243). Families can be broken up into five different types. The first is the
traditional family, which includes a mother, father, and their biological children. Next, is the blended
family which includes...show more content...
William, known as Bill, was born on July 20, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN. He worked in the plaster
/stucco business for over 25 years before working at Northwest Airlines. His wife's maiden name
was Lorraine Mulcahy. Lorraine was born on August 13, 1922 in St. Paul, MN. Lorraine went to
college at the University of Minnesota where she got her Bachelor of Science degree and became a
dental hygienist. My grandma "Lo" is the genealogy nut in our family. She has searched for
birthdates, marriage licenses, and other documents of her grandparents. I called grandma Lo to get
some information on my great–grandparents and family stories. I found out I was part Norwegian
and I never even knew it! Grandma Lo's parents were Edward Mulcahy and Olga Shermoen. Her
father Ed was born on April 15, 1880 in Minneapolis, MN. Ed worked as a claim agent for the Great
Northern Railroad in the twin cities. Olga was born on March 15, 1888 in Hawley, MN. She also
worked for the Great Northern Railroad as a matron. Edward was 100% Irish while Olga was 100%
Norwegian. This makes my grandma Lorraine 50% Irish & 50% Norwegian. My grandpa Bill was
adopted in Minneapolis so his genealogy is unknown. He was told by his adopted parents that he
was mostly Irish. If we pretended Bill was 100% Irish, this would make my mom 75% Irish and 25%
Norwegian.

Argumentative Essay About Family
When I hear the word family, I think of people who are are blood related, the people you live
with, and the people you see all the time. They provide for you and embarrass you. People are also
family, even if they aren't blood related, but are there for you no matter what and they mean
everything to you. Family is always by your side when you need them. People hear family and
think about parents, I hear family and think about my parents, aunts, cousins, friends, and my karate
family. They are all so important to me and I don't know what I would do without them. On the
other hand, Romeo and Juliet displayed family in an interesting way. When Juliet said she didn't
want to marry Paris, her mother said she would disown her if she didn't do...show more content...
Loyalty is sticking with the people who have hurt you or lost your trust. It's having someone's back
even though they might've stabbed you in yours. When you have loyalty, you don't leave someone
just because they said something mean about you or you heard something from someone else. They
might have hurt you, or you might've gotten into an argument, but at the end of the day you will
always be best friends. When you have loyalty is doesn't matter what they said or what they did, you
love them anyway. Similarly, how Romeo and Juliet get married behind their parents' backs. Also,
how when Romeo thought that Juliet was dead, he went and got a poison and killed himself.
Another example is when Tybalt kept his loyalty to the Capulet family by killing Mercutio.
When I hear the word trust I think of friends. You have to have a lot of trust in your friends and
they need to be able to trust you. I have a huge amount of trust in my best friend, I tell her
everything. There are some people who say that you can trust them, but then it turns out that you
can't and they've told everyone your secret. I think that trust is confiding in a person or people that
you know if you say, "don't tell anyone," they won't tell anyone. For instance, in Romeo and Juliet,
Friar Laurence kept Romeo and Juliet's trust by not telling anyone about their marriage. I think that
Romeo and Juliet trusted each other enough

The Future of the Family Essay
The Future of the Family
A family, who lives together, eats together, prays together, and works together is a nuclear family.
In the early 1960's the term nuclear family was used to describe the start of the family that was
suggested to be dominant in the culture of the time. Divorced and single parent families rarely
received any positive attention. Today, social scientists estimate that less then 15% of US families fit
the two parents, two offspring family. It's important to consider that for a society to survive its
population must reproduce, or the results are going to be reduction of the population. The young
must learn to perform adult roles, values and attitudes. For this to happen we need...show more

Such as the women have enhanced and maintained their status and probably the overall quality of
their lives. But this also means that the women don't have much time as before to spend with her
family and kids. Despite the positive aspects the grater negative consequences and effects are on the
children. Children's are the future of the society, and negative outcomes for them are damaging.
Anyhow, having two happy parents in a family will even reduce divorce rates. Happy parents
don't get divorce, and the offspring's of that family are likely to have a successful marriage
themselves. Strong families share positive values with each other. Children's learn from their
parents the good qualities of a family. It's not always true though, the family may not be the best
and there may be some bad qualities that are easier for the kids to pick up and apply. That's the
reason we should be willing to keep and maintain traditional families.
Having good qualities and values help couples stay loyal with each other. It reduces the amount of
arguments between them. It will make them think about their children before getting divorce. They
will think about the effects on their children because they represent the future of the society and
negative consequences for them are significant.
A happy loving family always sticks together to determine important decisions and

My Family My Family has always been a very important staple in my life, they come to all of my

No name, no face to put with him, heck I don't even know if I look like him. My family and I are
different, there are families that don't share the same situation as having four adopted kids that
are all spread apart in age. Yet my family and I push through that and we look past that, people
don't understand they think that coming from different parents would divide us kids by
thinking, "hey, you aren't my real brother " That kind of thing does not happen, if anything being
from different parents brings us together because we are so different from each other we are
curious to learn about each other. Some people see it as a tough thing to deal with and I see it as
a blessing for my parents, my brothers, and myself to be unique in this way, and we have always
been a religious family so we definitely believe that each one of us kids was a blessing to our
parents. The sacrifice that they make everyday when the go to work to support four kids who
they never owed anything, never had to call themselves our parents, but they took us in and
called us their own and they are angels walking, for the wonderful impact they have had on the
lives of me and my brothers. Growing up in a large family there will always be troubles and when
the ages are so far apart there will always be growing pains. Being adopted they have the choice of
picking kids that are farther apart from each other which means that we are all in a

My Role in the Family
My Role in the Family
Every man and woman, boy and girl, possesses a certain role within their family. Despite the
frequently used titles of sister or daughter, my role in the family delves much deeper than that; I am
more than just a daughter to my mother, a sister to my elder sibling, and the baby of the family; I
bring a sense of comfort, comedy, and completion to it. I am the confidant, the best friend, and the
final child who completes the family to a satisfactory degree. My role of the sarcastically funny and
unconditionally loving baby of the family is evident in the slightly disheveled, lived–in appearance
of our home, in the values held by my half–Turkish, half–American family, and in the relations

that used to reside in the red living room, and a small TV that accompanies it. The family desk,

What Is A Family? Essay
For most of us, the family is considered as a well–known and comfortable institution. The perfect
model of the 'ideal' family is still mostly considered to be consisted from two different sexes'
parents, and one or more children. Until quite recently, the sociology of the family was mostly
functionalist and just in the last few decades has been challenged from various directions. There are
many different definitions about what the family is. Different theoretical positions influence these
variations. For example, the functionalist sociologist George Peter Murdock defines the family as "a
social group characterized by common residence, economic co–operation and reproduction. It
includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain...show more content...
An early functionalist George Murdock argued that the family plays the main role in the society by
performing three main functions– пЃ¶Stabilisation of the sexual behaviour and reproduction.
пЃ¶Providing the basic economic requirements. пЃ¶Serving the function of socialisation of the next
generation. G. Murdock claimed that without family serving these three functions the society would
disappear. He considered these functions as universal, although he agreed that they could develop.
Talcott Parsons argues this statement, by saying, that there are two broad functions of the family–
primary socialisation and stabilisation of the adult personality 'throughout the emotional security,
including sexual expression, provided by marriage' (O'Donnell, 1997). In these days, when society
is changing, the functionalistic statements lose their strength. For example, the sex outside the
marriage, in these days of easily available contraception, is no more the taboo. Margaret Mead
argues Murdock's and Parsons imply that nuclear family is biologically necessary and natural. She
stated that the nuclear family is based on culture, not biology. Marxist views on the family Marxists
have very critical view of the family and society. They adopt a structural perspective, but put it in
the class nature of the society. The starting point for the most Marxist analyses of gender and the
family is Friedrich Engels' (1820–1895) The Origin of the

Doing what my parents tell me to do is just one of many reasons why I am a rock of support for
my family. Not only do I support my parents, but I also support my younger cousins and brother.
As an eldest brother and cousin, I feel I must be a good example for the young ones. There are
numerous methods of showing my cousins and brother support. One main way is by providing
advice on making the right choices. For example my brother had a problem at school with one of
his classmates. As a mature and responsible older brother, I advised him to use the non–violent
approach. I told him to go discuss the problem and try to resolve it peacefully. My brother then
asked me why he shouldn't fight his classmate. I explained how violence is the answer to
anything. I advised him to first talk to his classmate in a professional manner. If then things get
out of hand, I told him to let the teacher know the situation. In the end, my brother didn't need to
get the teacher involved. In fact, their conflict was resolved by talking through with each other. I
also am very supportive of my little cousins. One way I help them out is by tutoring them once in
a while. They come over to my house and I assist them with their school work. Not only I help my
cousins with their homework, but I also support them recreationally. I play various sports and
activities with them. As their older cousin/brother, I feel I should be a good role model to follow. I
am also known for being there

Characteristics Of My Family
When I was 13 years old, I realized that I really did fit in with my family. My facial features are
remarkably similar to my mother's, and I have the same color hair as my father. I'm artistically
talented at art/drawing like my mother. I also have the same taste in music as my dad. We're one big
family with many similarities.
I did not always consider myself as eminently similar to my family. Mostly because my family was
not like your typical family. Mother, father, two kids and a pet living happily, no. My parents were
never married, and I had lived with my grandmother and uncle since I was only a few months old.
My mother was always out and about doing whatever, and my father was either always working or
laid off and out playing with his band at bars and what not.
One day, during summer after 7th grade, I discovered that I was a pretty good at drawing like my
mom. It was a hot summer day, so I stayed inside. I walked into the living room and saw my mom
drawing. She is such an amazing artist, I thought to myself as I watched her sketch. "Hey mom,
how is your drawing coming along?', I asked. "Good Punkin, would you like to draw too?", she
then asked. "Ya, sure. Sounds fun!", I replied. I began to draw a rose, then added a quote to it.
The quote was, "We accept the love we think we deserve." by Stephen Chbosky. My mother
watched as I drew the rose then said, "Looks like you got mama's artistic side, Hun!", she then said.

Something I want to look into more is why this layout and the meaning of each one on a specific

Descriptive Essay About My Family
My Cozy Home A home is a place where you have lived with your family for so long that it has, in
a sense, become a part of you. It can be a structure, a neighborhood, a state or a country. In my
case, when I think of home, I initially think of a building, my house. My home, however, is much
more than just a house to me. It is also the place where I am always sure to find those I love most,
my family. In a generation where there are so many broken homes, I am fortunate to live with
and be raised by two parents, who still love each other. I have two older sisters, Sabreena and
Trinity, and a dog, a poodle named Puffs. I live in a quaint, four bedroom house in a subdivision
called Steeplechase in Avondale, Louisiana. My house is a place of safety and refuge. My
neighborhood is full of friendly, familiar faces. I have been smiling, waiving and occasionally
talking to these friends and acquaintances since we moved here when I was just two years old.
Growing up in this environment has, I'm sure, contributed to certain character and personality traits,
which have made me who I am today. I am ultimately a trusting individual, who is both friendly and
hospitable. You can learn much about a person simply by walking through their home. For example,
if you walk through my house, you would instantly notice framed Bible verses, decorative crosses,
inspirational sayings and a trophy case, filled with different types of past accomplishments. In our

Characteristics Of My Family Essay
Family is a truly special thing. Essentially, what makes a family so unique is that unification of a
group of individuals with so many variant characteristics. In fact, each and every one of our unique
relatives, in their own individual way, contributes to that extraordinary bond that families share. Our
blood may define family, but it's those unique relationships: like the one with the controlling
grandmother, that crazy aunt, or even that inappropriately laid back uncle, that genuinely gives
family a special sense of belonging. Every single family has a head, an alpha male or female. This
individual tends to believe the universe revolves around them, and that they resemble absolute
royalty when compared to the rest of the family. In my case, this is my grandma Rosaura. The
fact is, that she is the oldest, most experienced person in our family. Correspondingly, she is
praised by the entire family as well as looked up to for guidance because of her " extensive
knowledge". In fact, she was a very successful lawyer who was able to raise four children by
herself; two characteristics of my grandmother's life which she would never let us forget. Thus,
emphasizing herself as the epitome of what you would call "a woman who don't need no man".
Furthermore, because of her position in the family, she's also developed some very interesting traits
over time. To begin with, she's extremely controlling and authoritarian. My mother is 46 and my

Family Structure Essay
A family is made up of two or more people, related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing in
the same home. Society's definition of 'family' is expanding and includes single parents, blended
families, unrelated individuals living cooperatively, and homosexual couples, among others.
Unfortunately, family guidelines have been slow to catch up to changing trends in modern lifestyles
(Crawford, 1999).
The complex family, or a family structure involving more than two adults, was prevalent before the
industrial revolution. The primary component in traditional society was the group, not the
individual. Individuals functioned as part of groups in such a way that their lives were greatly
influenced by the group even more so than by...show more content...
China's ongoing economic revolution has had a profound impact not only on China but on the
world. The market oriented reforms China has implemented over the past two decades have made
way for individual inventiveness and entrepreneurship. The result has been the largest decline of
poverty and one of the fastest increases in income levels ever recorded. China today is the third
largest economy in the world, and is projected to pass Japan to become second largest by the end of
2010 (Hamlin, 2010). It has sustained average economic growth of over 9.5% for the past 26 years
(Department of State, 2010). In 2009 its $4.814 trillion economy was about one third the size of the
U.S. economy (Department of State, 2010). U.S. exporters maintain concerns about protection of
intellectual property rights, fair market admittance due to strict testing and standards requirements
for some imported products, and policies appearing to pursue import replacement. In addition, a lack
of simplicity in the regulatory process complicates the process for businesses to plan changes in the
domestic market structure.
One of the severe harmful consequences of China's rapid industrial development has been increased
pollution and deprivation of natural resources. China surpassed the U.S. as the world's largest
emitter of carbon dioxide in 2007 (Harrabin, 2008). Almost all of the nation's rivers are considered

Family traditions and cultural legacies contribute to an individual's self–identity because it is the
fabric of where he or she derived from, who they are, and where they're journeying. Cultivating

customs. It allows them to identify with other of similar mindsets and backgrounds. Cultural heritage
can provide an automatic sense of unity and belonging within a group and allows us to better

"Culture the entire way of life of a group of people (including both material and symbolic
elements) that acts as a lens through which one views the world and is passed from one
generation to the next." "Although culture may seem to be "second nature" it is something
learned, rather than innate. Because we learn it so slowly and incrementally, we are often
unaware of the process. For instance, few of us would be conscious of having learned all the
slang words we currently use or the distance we typically maintain from someone while talking
with him/her. We may not remember exactly when we first felt patriotic or how we formed our
opinions about people from the upper class. We all carry culture inside ourselves; it becomes
ingrained and internalized into our way of thinking and acting. Culture guides the way we make
sense of the world around us and the way we make decisions about what to do and how to do it."
However those guidelines are not always embraced my every family member, so then the family

Personally, I come from a very traditional family. Much like the assumptions made by the students in
the article Defining Family: Young Adults' Perceptions of the Parent
–Child Bond by Mellisa
Holtzman (2008). This is what comes to mind when most people define family; a nuclear family, with
married parents, and biological children. However, a family is a complex system and can take on
many different forms. Today, in a world of the "postmodern family" the traditional lines of family
structure are blurred. Children may come from diverse types of homes, or a couple, married or not
may choose to have no children and consider...show more content...
Living with extended family members has also been publicized lately in relation to the poor
economy. Young adults who typically lived on their own after college are moving back in with
their parents, older adults on fixed incomes that do not go as far as they once did are living with
their children. This is a definite shift in the traditional family. Having graduated and moved out on
my own prior to the economic decline I have learned to live with less, but having known that was
coming I would have considered living at home longer. My siblings have or are planning on moving
back in with our parents after college graduation to get ahead money–wise. This is a stressor on not
only the individuals as a lack of feelings of freedom, but also an adaptation by the family as a
whole that was unplanned years ago. It is my belief that recognizing any family structure or
definition is important, as the traditional version may be skewed in so many ways, without
knowing or recognizing the "family" that people we run across may come from. We can also learn
from other family definitions to build upon our own themes, rules, and beliefs. Adding stigma and
prejudice toward families different from our own not only alienate the members, but can add
unnecessary stress upon that family system. Stress in any family system can be seen as either an
adaptation potential or a negative force. Many effects on the

Essay about Family Today
Family Today What is a family today? What challenges does being a member of a family present
while traditional family structures change? Every family has to struggle to balance the demands of
work and children. Also the relationship between each spouse can become more delicate and
complicated. Besides, the single parent has to face even more challenges than any other.
Today, in a vast majority of families, both the wife and husband have a job. Many working parents
are under stress as they have to try to balance the demands of their work, children and...show more

The traditional family unit changed rapidly during the second half of the 20th century due to the
effects of two world wars, rapid industrialization, the development of technology, and the effects of
the women's liberation movement. As a result the family became small (less children) and the
majority of women now can obtain equal opportunities in both education and work.
The role of a family is to struggle to survive, to protect and support children until children become
mature and independent adults capable of providing for themselves, and to provide a good standard
of living. Moreover, if men and women can not co–operate well to deal withГЇВјЕ’the
decision–making is difficult or does not satisfy both, and then wife and husband may easily have
arguments and disagreements. For some of them, these may become a serious communication
problem.
Since both men and women have to look after the family, sometimes they will have to put their
personal, emotional and physical needs aside. As already mentioned, when men and women feel
stressed, then arguments and complaints may hurt the relationship. As a result, the relationship
between wife and husband becomes more delicate and complicated than in the former traditional
family where the wife remained at home to undertake all the tasks of raising children, cooking and
cleaning.
The vast majority of single–parent families are

Essay on My Family History
My Family History
Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have
a better perspective of your life. Having a clear understanding of your family background allows you
to better appreciate the things that you would normally take for granted. The house, the car, and the
average clothing may look better when one sees the sacrifices their family has made. They will see
that their family has worked very hard just so their family can experience the better things in life. A
persons roots and origin is one of the most important things to explore. It alone can bring you closer
to self–discovery.
There are two sides to a person's family and one side of my family has...show more content...
One of these is that on Thanksgiving everybody comes together to my parents' house in New Jersey
for a huge feast. On Christmas only my mother and the children (me and my brother) travel to Illinois
to spend a week with my grandparents. On New Years Eve we all get together at my parents'
house in New Jersey and toast to the New Year with champagne and apple cider. During Labor
Day weekend all of my family travels to South Jersey to my grandfathers' condo. We usually
spend all of our time on the beach and barbequing, except on Sunday when we go to church. After
all, my grandfather is a minister. One of our biggest family traditions is going back to Puerto
Rico. Every year my mother and I travel back to Puerto Rico for a portion of our summer
vacation. Now that I am older I travel there more often and stay there much longer. My father never
joins because he doesn't like my mothers side of the father too much and he thinks that we when we
speak Spanish we are all plotting against him. Of course that's not true though. My bother doesn't
speak Spanish so he doesn't like to go either. I guess that tradition is one that belongs solely to my
mother and I.
The role of the people in family basically stayed the same for most of the generations with a little
change in the later generations. Earlier the males were the only ones that worked in the family and
the wife stayed at home and took care of the house and

Essay About The Family

  • 1. Reflective Essay About My Family Everyone has a story of who they are and how they came to be. We all grow up wanting the perfect family, the perfect parents, perfect house, perfect siblings, and to top it off, the white picket fence that surrounds the house. Then life sets in and you realize that life is not all rainbows and unicorns. The people in our life and the environment that we grow up in, is what shapes us to the person we are today. Factors that influence how we are as a person are our family, parents, and society. I come from a family that is hard to describe. We all get along and know when it is time to unite as a family but at the same time the moment someone disagrees with one another, sides are chosen and it takes forever for us to make up. My family has...show more content... My dad was a great dad if he was not under the influence, but if he was under the influence he was very abusive, physically and emotionally. My mother on the other hand, wants nothing but for me to prosper in life and be happy. If I were to describe my mom with one word it would be, fighter. Everything my mother does is for the benefit of my brother and I. My mother has influenced me in many ways. She has taught me how to stand up for myself, to not be afraid of things that may frighten me, not to listen to what others have to say about me because in the long run, what I think about myself is all that matters. My mother is my biggest influencer and supporter and I will be forever grateful that I have such a great mom. Society today is a huge influential part in everyone's life. Others may say that they are their own person and that no one has affected who they are as a person because they are, "their own person," but society affects everyone to what they wear, what music they listen to, how they behave, and many other things. Society has influenced me to stand up for others and to be a voice for those who are too scared to share theirs. I see all over the news and social media, all the hate that goes on in the world just because someone is a little different then them. Society has also influenced the clothes I wear and music I listen Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on My Family's Ancestry Gathering research about my family and its history turned out to be an interesting and insightful opportunity, through which I learned much more than I expected. When I started this project, I knew that I would not be able to find as much useful information on the Internet as some of my peers. In effect, I realized that I would have to rely on other primary resources such as my parents and grandparents to reveal the story of my ancestry to me. After I had interviewed them, my family history became much clearer to me. More than 2 millennia ago, around the 3rd century BC, a group of Tamil–speaking people from present–day South India migrated to the nearby island of Sri Lanka. Among these people, known today as "Sri Lankan Tamils", are my...show more content... The Peninsula has a hot, monsoonal tropical climate characterized by a dry season from February to October and a wet season from October to January. Because of the monsoons, the region is humid and averages three feet of rain each year, which is relatively low compared to the rest of the island. The climate of the region allows for many crops to be grown including many varieties of fruits and vegetables. While interviewing my parents and grandparents, I learned about many customs and aspects of the Sri Lankan Tamil culture. Sri Lankan Tamils are devotees of the Shaiva sect of Hinduism, mainly worshipping the lord Shiva. The three main cultural festivals celebrated in the area are Thai Pongal (beginning of the harvest), Chittrai Pongal (Tamil New Year), and Deepavali (Hindu Festival of Lights). In addition, pujas (religious rituals) are performed for different occasions, such as the death day of an ancestor or the celebration of a certain Hindu deity. It was also a custom to ask the village astrologer for advice on certain decisions, such as the name of a newborn child. Paternal Great–Grandparents In the early 1900's, Kadirasaipillai and Vairavipillai Kandappar, my paternal grandmother's parents, were born in the village of Puloly, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. They were both born into families of the Vellalar caste of Tamil society and went to school at Puttalai Vidhyalayam, the only schooling option Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. My Day With My Family I believe that I feel the most comfortable when I am home with my family. Any activity we do together is amazing. Whether it's watching a movie together, having dinner, or having something to talk about. There is always a time of the day where we just have a good laugh about something that happened throughout the day. I know my family will always be there for me and I will do the same for them. I believe that I am blessed to have such a loving, caring, and compassionate family. I believe when times are tough, my family is my true comfort. Even if it's the smallest thing like a headache or stomachache I feel better with just my mom doing anything for me to feel better. I don't need medicine to heal the smallest pains; all I need is my family's love. I've never looked at another family and thought, "wow they have an amazing relationship, i am jealous". Sometimes I do the opposite because I never had thought wrong about my family even when we're aggravated sometimes. I remember during the summer we would have a cookout every single Saturday and Sunday. We would all get together and have my dads "special asadas". Which are a special steak well done with allot of lime and spices. We would sit there for hours eating and having a beer. We would call close friends that we even call family. I believe there is no perfect life or perfect family. I believe my family will overcome anything that causes pain or misery. I believe that we are in full control of our own wellness, both Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Word Family Essay The word family is such a perplexing and tricky topic to define and describe. That's because of how many ways a single person can explain it. Nowadays, there are so many arguments about what a family actually is. Is a family considered to be made up of a heterosexual married couple, and that has two kids? Well, that 's what Brian Powell, author of Changing Counts, Counting Change: Toward a More Inclusive Definition of Family, found when he explored the web in search of what a family was. I Googled "family" and looked at its pictorial representations. The images presented a group of close–knit and happy people, but if one looks closer at these pictures, one will also notice that these groups almost always are made up of what appear to be a father, a mother, and their children (most often two children: an older boy and his younger sister). These pictures typify what Canadian sociologist Dorothy Smith (1993) coined as the Standard North American Family (SNAF)–which strongly privileges heterosexual married households and, in particular, those that include children and those in which women and men assume traditional gender roles. The SNAF often is portrayed as "the family" and the gold standard by which other family arrangements are evaluated–often as "lesser" families or not as families at all. These other family arrangements–which are nearly invisible in the aforementioned Google images–include biracial families, single–parent families, adoptive families, childless families, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

A family back in the 1950's was probably considered a husband, wife, and one or more children. Times have changed and families have become much different. The Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others book defines family as a, "Unit made up of any number of persons who live in relationship with one another over time in a common living space who are usually, but not always, united by marriage and kinship" (Beebe, Beebe & Redmond, 243). Families can be broken up into five different types. The first is the traditional family, which includes a mother, father, and their biological children. He worked in the plaster /stucco business for over 25 years before working at Northwest Airlines. His wife's maiden name was Lorraine Mulcahy. Lorraine was born on August 13, 1922 in St. Paul, MN. Lorraine went to college at the University of Minnesota where she got her Bachelor of Science degree and became a dental hygienist. My grandma "Lo" is the genealogy nut in our family. She has searched for birthdates, marriage licenses, and other documents of her grandparents. I called grandma Lo to get some information on my great–grandparents and family stories. I found out I was part Norwegian and I never even knew it! Grandma Lo's parents were Edward Mulcahy and Olga Shermoen. Her father Ed was born on April 15, 1880 in Minneapolis, MN. Edward was 100% Irish while Olga was 100% Norwegian. This makes my grandma Lorraine 50% Irish & 50% Norwegian. My grandpa Bill was adopted in Minneapolis so his genealogy is unknown. He was told by his adopted parents that he was mostly Irish. If we pretended Bill was 100% Irish, this would make my mom 75% Irish and 25% Norwegian. • 6. Argumentative Essay About Family When I hear the word family, I think of people who are are blood related, the people you live with, and the people you see all the time. They provide for you and embarrass you. People are also family, even if they aren't blood related, but are there for you no matter what and they mean everything to you. Family is always by your side when you need them. People hear family and think about parents, I hear family and think about my parents, aunts, cousins, friends, and my karate family. They are all so important to me and I don't know what I would do without them. On the other hand, Romeo and Juliet displayed family in an interesting way. It's having someone's back even though they might've stabbed you in yours. When you have loyalty, you don't leave someone just because they said something mean about you or you heard something from someone else. They might have hurt you, or you might've gotten into an argument, but at the end of the day you will always be best friends. When you have loyalty is doesn't matter what they said or what they did, you love them anyway. Similarly, how Romeo and Juliet get married behind their parents' backs. Also, how when Romeo thought that Juliet was dead, he went and got a poison and killed himself. Another example is when Tybalt kept his loyalty to the Capulet family by killing Mercutio. When I hear the word trust I think of friends. You have to have a lot of trust in your friends and they need to be able to trust you. I have a huge amount of trust in my best friend, I tell her everything. There are some people who say that you can trust them, but then it turns out that you can't and they've told everyone your secret. I think that trust is confiding in a person or people that you know if you say, "don't tell anyone," they won't tell anyone. For instance, in Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence kept Romeo and Juliet's trust by not telling anyone about their marriage. I think that Romeo and Juliet trusted each other enough Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In the early 1960's the term nuclear family was used to describe the start of the family that was suggested to be dominant in the culture of the time. Divorced and single parent families rarely received any positive attention. Today, social scientists estimate that less then 15% of US families fit the two parents, two offspring family. But this also means that the women don't have much time as before to spend with her family and kids. Despite the positive aspects the grater negative consequences and effects are on the children. Children's are the future of the society, and negative outcomes for them are damaging. Anyhow, having two happy parents in a family will even reduce divorce rates. Happy parents don't get divorce, and the offspring's of that family are likely to have a successful marriage themselves. Strong families share positive values with each other. Children's learn from their parents the good qualities of a family. It's not always true though, the family may not be the best and there may be some bad qualities that are easier for the kids to pick up and apply. That's the reason we should be willing to keep and maintain traditional families. Having good qualities and values help couples stay loyal with each other. It reduces the amount of arguments between them. It will make them think about their children before getting divorce. Some people see it as a tough thing to deal with and I see it as a blessing for my parents, my brothers, and myself to be unique in this way, and we have always been a religious family so we definitely believe that each one of us kids was a blessing to our parents. Despite the frequently used titles of sister or daughter, my role in the family delves much deeper than that; I am more than just a daughter to my mother, a sister to my elder sibling, and the baby of the family; I bring a sense of comfort, comedy, and completion to it. I am the confidant, the best friend, and the final child who completes the family to a satisfactory degree. • 10. What Is A Family? Essay For most of us, the family is considered as a well–known and comfortable institution. The perfect model of the 'ideal' family is still mostly considered to be consisted from two different sexes' parents, and one or more children. Until quite recently, the sociology of the family was mostly functionalist and just in the last few decades has been challenged from various directions. There are many different definitions about what the family is. Different theoretical positions influence these variations. For example, the functionalist sociologist George Peter Murdock defines the family as "a social group characterized by common residence, economic co–operation and reproduction. It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain...show more content... An early functionalist George Murdock argued that the family plays the main role in the society by performing three main functions– пЃ¶Stabilisation of the sexual behaviour and reproduction. пЃ¶Providing the basic economic requirements. пЃ¶Serving the function of socialisation of the next generation. G. Murdock claimed that without family serving these three functions the society would disappear. He considered these functions as universal, although he agreed that they could develop. Talcott Parsons argues this statement, by saying, that there are two broad functions of the family– primary socialisation and stabilisation of the adult personality 'throughout the emotional security, including sexual expression, provided by marriage' (O'Donnell, 1997). In these days, when society is changing, the functionalistic statements lose their strength. For example, the sex outside the marriage, in these days of easily available contraception, is no more the taboo. Margaret Mead argues Murdock's and Parsons imply that nuclear family is biologically necessary and natural. She stated that the nuclear family is based on culture, not biology. Marxist views on the family Marxists have very critical view of the family and society. They adopt a structural perspective, but put it in the class nature of the society. The starting point for the most Marxist analyses of gender and the family is Friedrich Engels' (1820–1895) The Origin of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. My Family Essay No one can't meet a family like mine's. My family is well diversified. Every family member plays an important role in all my family's lives. In my family, there are four people: my father, my mother, my little brother and me. My father is one who brings money home and is also responsible for organizing and planning family trips. My mother is the one who is in charge for making meals and makes sure everyone eats at the appropriate times. My little brother is the pet of the family. He actually doesn't have any responsibilities, for he's the pet. I am the rock of support in my family. I always go beyond my parents' expectations. Doing what my parents tell me to do is just one of many reasons why I am a rock of support for my family. Not only do I support my parents, but I also support my younger cousins and brother. As an eldest brother and cousin, I feel I must be a good example for the young ones. There are numerous methods of showing my cousins and brother support. One main way is by providing advice on making the right choices. For example my brother had a problem at school with one of his classmates. As a mature and responsible older brother, I advised him to use the non–violent approach. I told him to go discuss the problem and try to resolve it peacefully. My brother then asked me why he shouldn't fight his classmate. I explained how violence is the answer to anything. I advised him to first talk to his classmate in a professional manner. If then things get out of hand, I told him to let the teacher know the situation. In the end, my brother didn't need to get the teacher involved. In fact, their conflict was resolved by talking through with each other. I also am very supportive of my little cousins. One way I help them out is by tutoring them once in a while. They come over to my house and I assist them with their school work. Not only I help my cousins with their homework, but I also support them recreationally. I play various sports and activities with them. As their older cousin/brother, I feel I should be a good role model to follow. I am also known for being there Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Characteristics Of My Family When I was 13 years old, I realized that I really did fit in with my family. My facial features are remarkably similar to my mother's, and I have the same color hair as my father. I'm artistically talented at art/drawing like my mother. I also have the same taste in music as my dad. We're one big family with many similarities. I did not always consider myself as eminently similar to my family. Mostly because my family was not like your typical family. Mother, father, two kids and a pet living happily, no. My parents were never married, and I had lived with my grandmother and uncle since I was only a few months old. My mother was always out and about doing whatever, and my father was either always working or laid off and out playing with his band at bars and what not. One day, during summer after 7th grade, I discovered that I was a pretty good at drawing like my mom. It was a hot summer day, so I stayed inside. I walked into the living room and saw my mom drawing. She is such an amazing artist, I thought to myself as I watched her sketch. "Hey mom, how is your drawing coming along?', I asked. "Good Punkin, would you like to draw too?", she then asked. "Ya, sure. Sounds fun!", I replied. I began to draw a rose, then added a quote to it. The quote was, "We accept the love we think we deserve." by Stephen Chbosky. My mother watched as I drew the rose then said, "Looks like you got mama's artistic side, Hun!", she then said. In an artistic sense, I realized Get more content on HelpWriting.net

While it was not extravagantly decorated like most religious buildings it maintained one that was inviting and allowed someone to let their guard down. Since I had a little bit of knowledge of the Gongyo, or prayer that was done, I was able to sort of follow along as it was recited. Many people had their string of beads and were reciting it from memory while others also read along. Since many people who had been there were following along in the books it helped the kids and I also feel more comfortable reading from the prayer book. The beads were simple and had a man on one side and a woman on the other side. Something I want to look into more is why this layout and the meaning of each one on a specific hand. It was difficult to feel an emotional movement during the prayers since I was so focused on saying them correctly in the fast–paced methodology used in Nichiren Buddhism. Later on in the service there were a couple songs led by some the youngest children in attendance. The words were projected which made it helpful since the songs were not traditional songs I have hear in the Christian churches Again, I did not have an emotional movement during the songs, but it did allow me to remember my days of being a preschool teacher at church and taking the kids to perform for their parents. It was always great to see the faces of excitement in each child's face. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Descriptive Essay About My Family My Cozy Home A home is a place where you have lived with your family for so long that it has, in a sense, become a part of you. It can be a structure, a neighborhood, a state or a country. In my case, when I think of home, I initially think of a building, my house. My home, however, is much more than just a house to me. It is also the place where I am always sure to find those I love most, my family. In a generation where there are so many broken homes, I am fortunate to live with and be raised by two parents, who still love each other. I have two older sisters, Sabreena and Trinity, and a dog, a poodle named Puffs. I live in a quaint, four bedroom house in a subdivision called Steeplechase in Avondale, Louisiana. My house is a place of safety and refuge. My neighborhood is full of friendly, familiar faces. I have been smiling, waiving and occasionally talking to these friends and acquaintances since we moved here when I was just two years old. Growing up in this environment has, I'm sure, contributed to certain character and personality traits, which have made me who I am today. I am ultimately a trusting individual, who is both friendly and hospitable. You can learn much about a person simply by walking through their home. For example, if you walk through my house, you would instantly notice framed Bible verses, decorative crosses, inspirational sayings and a trophy case, filled with different types of past accomplishments. • 15. Characteristics Of My Family Essay Family is a truly special thing. Essentially, what makes a family so unique is that unification of a group of individuals with so many variant characteristics. In fact, each and every one of our unique relatives, in their own individual way, contributes to that extraordinary bond that families share. Our blood may define family, but it's those unique relationships: like the one with the controlling grandmother, that crazy aunt, or even that inappropriately laid back uncle, that genuinely gives family a special sense of belonging. Every single family has a head, an alpha male or female. This individual tends to believe the universe revolves around them, and that they resemble absolute royalty when compared to the rest of the family. In my case, this is my grandma Rosaura. The fact is, that she is the oldest, most experienced person in our family. Correspondingly, she is praised by the entire family as well as looked up to for guidance because of her " extensive knowledge". In fact, she was a very successful lawyer who was able to raise four children by herself; two characteristics of my grandmother's life which she would never let us forget. Thus, emphasizing herself as the epitome of what you would call "a woman who don't need no man". Furthermore, because of her position in the family, she's also developed some very interesting traits over time. To begin with, she's extremely controlling and authoritarian. • 16. Family Structure Essay A family is made up of two or more people, related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing in the same home. Society's definition of 'family' is expanding and includes single parents, blended families, unrelated individuals living cooperatively, and homosexual couples, among others. Unfortunately, family guidelines have been slow to catch up to changing trends in modern lifestyles (Crawford, 1999). The complex family, or a family structure involving more than two adults, was prevalent before the industrial revolution. The primary component in traditional society was the group, not the individual. Individuals functioned as part of groups in such a way that their lives were greatly influenced by the group even more so than by...show more content... China's ongoing economic revolution has had a profound impact not only on China but on the world. The market oriented reforms China has implemented over the past two decades have made way for individual inventiveness and entrepreneurship. The result has been the largest decline of poverty and one of the fastest increases in income levels ever recorded. China today is the third largest economy in the world, and is projected to pass Japan to become second largest by the end of 2010 (Hamlin, 2010). It has sustained average economic growth of over 9.5% for the past 26 years (Department of State, 2010). In 2009 its $4.814 trillion economy was about one third the size of the U.S. economy (Department of State, 2010). U.S. exporters maintain concerns about protection of intellectual property rights, fair market admittance due to strict testing and standards requirements for some imported products, and policies appearing to pursue import replacement. In addition, a lack of simplicity in the regulatory process complicates the process for businesses to plan changes in the domestic market structure. One of the severe harmful consequences of China's rapid industrial development has been increased pollution and deprivation of natural resources. China surpassed the U.S. as the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide in 2007 (Harrabin, 2008). Almost all of the nation's rivers are considered polluted to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Essay On Family Identity Family traditions and cultural legacies contribute to an individual's self–identity because it is the fabric of where he or she derived from, who they are, and where they're journeying. Cultivating Culture states: "Culture can give people a connection to a certain social values, beliefs, religions and customs. It allows them to identify with other of similar mindsets and backgrounds. Cultural heritage can provide an automatic sense of unity and belonging within a group and allows us to better understand previous generations and the history of where we come from." "Culture the entire way of life of a group of people (including both material and symbolic elements) that acts as a lens through which one views the world and is passed from one generation to the next." "Although culture may seem to be "second nature" it is something learned, rather than innate. Because we learn it so slowly and incrementally, we are often unaware of the process. For instance, few of us would be conscious of having learned all the slang words we currently use or the distance we typically maintain from someone while talking with him/her. We may not remember exactly when we first felt patriotic or how we formed our opinions about people from the upper class. We all carry culture inside ourselves; it becomes ingrained and internalized into our way of thinking and acting. Culture guides the way we make sense of the world around us and the way we make decisions about what to do and how to do it." However those guidelines are not always embraced my every family member, so then the family traditions and cultural behaviors can become a burden to the family member who wants to branch out and lead a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Defining Family Essay Determining family structure and dynamics as well as defining the family is a complex process. Personally, I come from a very traditional family. Much like the assumptions made by the students in the article Defining Family: Young Adults' Perceptions of the Parent –Child Bond by Mellisa Holtzman (2008). This is what comes to mind when most people define family; a nuclear family, with married parents, and biological children. However, a family is a complex system and can take on many different forms. Today, in a world of the "postmodern family" the traditional lines of family structure are blurred. Children may come from diverse types of homes, or a couple, married or not may choose to have no children and consider...show more content... Living with extended family members has also been publicized lately in relation to the poor economy. Young adults who typically lived on their own after college are moving back in with their parents, older adults on fixed incomes that do not go as far as they once did are living with their children. This is a definite shift in the traditional family. Having graduated and moved out on my own prior to the economic decline I have learned to live with less, but having known that was coming I would have considered living at home longer. My siblings have or are planning on moving back in with our parents after college graduation to get ahead money–wise. This is a stressor on not only the individuals as a lack of feelings of freedom, but also an adaptation by the family as a whole that was unplanned years ago. It is my belief that recognizing any family structure or definition is important, as the traditional version may be skewed in so many ways, without knowing or recognizing the "family" that people we run across may come from. We can also learn from other family definitions to build upon our own themes, rules, and beliefs. Adding stigma and prejudice toward families different from our own not only alienate the members, but can add unnecessary stress upon that family system. Stress in any family system can be seen as either an adaptation potential or a negative force. Many effects on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The traditional family unit changed rapidly during the second half of the 20th century due to the effects of two world wars, rapid industrialization, the development of technology, and the effects of the women's liberation movement. The role of a family is to struggle to survive, to protect and support children until children become mature and independent adults capable of providing for themselves, and to provide a good standard of living. As already mentioned, when men and women feel stressed, then arguments and complaints may hurt the relationship.
