to only a segment of the audience, I am met with reproof from that part of the applause from the audience. Shortly thereafter, a friend of our speaker came up to him and

The magic works best if every person in the audience feels that the speaker is talking to each of their fur coats?” The moral of the story – ensure that the ‘marked’ person is indeed a person!
them alone. Last week, when I was the Toastmaster at a meeting of one of the Clubs in Delhi, a
member who had sat to my right told me, “Deepak, I found you were only looking in my direction. As American Poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “One of the most wonderful things in nature is
While, I liked your attention, don’t you think you deprived the others?” I had just about managed a glance of the eye; it transcends speech; it is the bodily symbol of identity.” Speak to the

different parts of the room that I was talking only to them, surely I had a squint…. or I had learnt “With eyes that looked into the very soul . . . Bright – and as black and burning as coal.”
the magic that all Toastmasters aspire to achieve! Lord Byron

That K is the essence of public speaking.” Bill Gove U Images—Jan 09 Tip-Tap-Toe Bright New Beginning Tips for Toastmasters Common Presentation Errors And How To Correct Standing on the brink of a bright new beginning I can feel the fresh new breeze coming to me • The One-Legged Speaker and I long to set myself free.... Symptoms: The speaker puts most of his/her weight on one leg. The other foot is usually placed toe down. This speaker usually leans on the lectern. I see the river that I have to cross Cure: Stand upright on both feet. Keep the feet a comfortable distance apart. and I see the bridge that can take me across... Maintain good posture. Refuse the temptation to lean on the lectern. I wish to climb, run and jump to the other side • The One-Handed Speaker and the No-Handed Speaker leaving burden of my big bag behind..... Symptoms: The "one-handed" speaker hides one hand in a pocket. Sometimes this speaker will remove that hand from one pocket only to put the other hand in the The bag in which I collected flowers, stones and some broken dreams.. other pocket. The "no-handed" speaker locks his/her hands in front or behind, Though it is dear but now it seems.. guaranteeing that the hands cannot be seen or used during the speech. Cure: Understand that your hands are perhaps the most expressive body language It is too heavy to take along.. tool you have. Make them work for you instead of hiding them. The next time you as my destination is far and the way too long.... get the urge to hide your hands, fight that impulse and let your hands stay out in the open. It has given me so many scars.. • The Reader / The Reader—Speaker my shoulders can’t bear pain of bleeding wounds any more... Symptoms: The speaker reads the entire speech. Cure: Understand that a speaker speaks. Use your notes to guide you, but realize I know for me its difficult to part.. that the audience doesn't want a reader, it wants a speaker. Practice your speech but now my life needs a new start.... beforehand so that you build your confidence and knowledge to deliver the speech as a speaker. Avoid using a manuscript and use only an outline or a Mind Map. So here I drop my bag, flowers and my broken dreams... and I wash my wounds with water of the stream • The Sloppy Speaker Symptoms: This speaker uses slang, doesn't articulate words, and gives an I see the sun shining and hear the birds singing... unprofessional feel to the presentation. standing on the brink of a bright new beginning........ When you begin speaking, speak to the eyes of the ‘marked’ persons. Speak a complete another person’s heart, head, mind and soul.
