Put People First took place on the same weekend as the March for the Alternative in 2009. Around 100,000 people attended. The march followed the same route as we will on the 26 th . This picture shows the march assembling on Victoria Embankment. Notice the march is coming towards us on the wrong side of the road, with the other carriageway still open. See how some people are on the wrong side of the barrier presenting an obvious risk of being hit by a car, particularly this person [click mouse] who is walking on the raised curb holding the hand of a child walking in the road.
Here the march is coming towards us but there a number of people on the left by the bus stop looking the other way either watching the march or attempting to walk up the street in the other direction. It is important to keep a distinction between those who are marching and those who are not.
Many groups will bring this type of banner to lead their delegation. Obviously if the march is continuous these will not be seen by the public or cameras. It is very important that we keep the march moving as groups attempting to maximise a photo opportunity can cause problems.
Some delegations are easier to spot than others!
There’s no problem making a noise but if bands of musicians try and stop and give a mini performance they can cause problems so, again, try and keep them moving.
People will turn up with all manner of placards etc some of which can become hazardous particularly in bad weather.
What about this person? If a member of the public is putting themselves in danger who is not a part of your delegation should you approach them?
The march will be heavily policed. They are there to help you. What we all want is a safe, peaceful event…
Not one that turns sour.
This is the route of the march from Victoria Embankment to Hyde Park.
Marcher will start assembling on the Embankment between Waterloo and Blackfriars Bridge from 11am aiming to move off at 12 noon. The Kings College student union where you will register as stewards is close to Temple tube station.

The march will proceed down to Westminster the turn back up Whitehall, past Trafalgar Square to Regent Street, along Piccadilly and then turn right into Park Lane to enter the rally in Hyde Park. A copy of this map is on the back of your briefing document.
