De trefwoorden die toegevoegd worden aan een publicatie (rood omlijnd) stonden vroeger ook op de kaartjes die je in het filmpje uit de kast ziet vliegen en zijn gebruikt op het moment dat ze de kaartenbakken zijn gaan digitaliseren tot databases. De huidige databases hebben deze trefwoorden vaak nog steeds en je kan ze gebruiken als je bijv. op zoek bent naar goeie zoektermen (in sociological abstracts heten ze subject headings)
  3. Voordeel van een vakspecifieke database met subject headings (trefwoorden) is ook dat altijd hetzelfde woord wordt gebruikt. Dat is met name handig bij landen (bijv. amsterdam, mokum, randstad, nederland)
  4. Het is niet ongewoon dat je tijdens het zoeken naar literatuur je zoekvraag bijstelt, bijvoorbeeld omdat je na een eerste verkenning een specifiekere onderzoekshypothese op kunt stellen. Je kan deze elementen dan ook prima opnemen in de zoekdracht.
