of cerebrospinal fluid identifies biomarkers for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Journal
of Neurochemestry. 95:1461–1471
This review is about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and profiling biomarkers
for this disease. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that causes damage to motor
neurons located in the cerebral cortex, brainstem and spinal cord. To help detect
specific biomarkers in this research, they used cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from ALS
patients and from the control subjects using surface-enhanced laser desorption/
ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS). This technique has
better precision in identifying biomarkers. Three biomarkers were found in the results,
transthyretin, cystatin C, and carboxy-terminal fragment of neuroendocrine protein
7B2. Two of these biomarkers were validated, showing a section of CSF biomarkers
of ALS patients. This study is very useful because it displays the correlation of how
important it is to find biomarkers for ALS patients and how cystain C can be a great
biomarker for that disease.
