“As you may have noticed … or not, because no one said anything
to me … I’ve been slacking on putting out a monthly learning
newsletter. I am very sorry for my lack of follow through and I hope
it hasn’t affected you negatively.
In an effort to continue the evolution of the learning
newsletter, I’m trying out a new format, a viewsletter if you will. It
affords me greater opportunity to be creative and I hope it will
afford you greater opportunity to enjoy experiencing the learning
news that happens across Allegany, Garrett and Washington
counties.

perceptions of the library and create raving fans. In keeping with the library mission and
guiding principles of the strategic plan, the overall goal of the library is to provide
maximum exposure and community engagement for the services and resources of the
Allegany County Library System. By providing excellent customer service as a library that
makes every effort to adapt and grow, and by communicating messages about library
services, the library will be more visible and integral to the community, and our future
growth and viability will be further supported by funders, increasing our ability to
provide the resources needed to sustain our organization in the future. The team will
make it easier for staff to do a great job, give staff the tools they need to do a great job,

If patrons are asking about what Civil War
events happened in your county, remember

It’s the 150th anniversary of the Civil War

Washington County had the largest local Civil
War event - the Battle of Antietam, and online
are reports of the Union dead buried in
Sharpsburg and the Confederate dead eventually
buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.

Mill, just to the east of Cumberland.

Garrett does not have much material on the
Civil War. Tableland Trails includes stories
about General Benjamin Franklin Kelley who
lived near Gortner, and “The Noble Ten” who
protected Accident from the rebels.
Civilian life during the war is included in The Civil War diary of James
Francis Beall. And for the patron who wants a weekly dose of Civil
War news, 150 years ago in the Hagerstown papers tells of the Battle
of Hancock, the Skirmish at Dam 4 and all other war related events.
