2. Allegory…
A story in which the characters, settings, and events
stand for abstract or moral concepts.
Allegories have two meanings: literal and symbolic
John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress” is an example of
spiritual allegory.
Part I tells of "Christian" and his journey to
"Celestial City.
Part II tells of the journey of Christian's wife
Christiana and their children to Celestial City.
3. Allegories in the “Pilgrim’s progress”…
At the very beginning of Bunyan’s “pilgrim’s progress”
we find …..
Christian:(symbolizes Christ follower.)
Cristian’s back pack.(represents his sins.)
The book in his hand.( refers to the Bible.)
Christian’s journey from the city
of destruction to Celestial City is
the representation of a religious-
minded man in order to keep his
faith alive to attain God’s grace to
give his soul a salvation…
4. Near the village of Morality
Christian meets Mr. Worldly
Wiseman.
He tells Christian that it would be
foolish of him to continue his
pilgrimage.
He suggests Christian to settle
down in the village.
But then came Evangelist.
Evangelist suggests Christian that
if he truly wants to save his soul
then he must return to the path
which he was walking before.
5. Wicket Gate
When Christian reaches the
Wicket Gate which is opened
by the watchman named
Good-Will, it is in a deeper
sight a symbol of Christ’s grace
to grant him salvation through
difficulties, strives and trials.
Later on Christian meets the
Cross.
6. The Hill Difficulties…
Christian got involved in an
argument with two men,
“Formalist & “Hypocrisy”.
At the Hill Difficulty they
didn’t take the hard way &
failed miserably.
Christian finds it is
necessary to climb up the
hill.
7. Palace Beautiful……..
The palace beautiful stands for a resting place for the
Pilgrims who are on the way to Celestial City. From
this place Pilgrims founds inspiration, exact
directions & training to reach to the God...
The devil in the Valley of Humiliation in the form
of Appolyon is his method to symbolize the worldly
temptations offered by the devil to make an
allegiance with him rather than with God.
Christian finally conquered Appolyon by the sword
which represents faith.
This scene conveys the victory of faith over
temptations.
8. Vanity Fair(Cristian)….
This fair was initiated by Beelzebub & Apollyon. There
will is to imprison people's mind by surrounding
them by Fear, Superstition & Envy…
Christian & Faithful were accused of being
Barbarians & they were brought to the court
because they tried to speak truth.
Court executed Faithful but Christian succeeded to
flee.
9. Doubting Castle & Giant Despair….
Despair instigated by his wife to kill the pilgrims
The Giant couldn’t kill Christian because of
‘Sunshine’
Christian used a key to escape named “Promise to
open the gate”
The six men defeated the Giant & the pilgrims
destroyed the castle.
10. Dark River….
Dark Water symbolizes Earthly
Obstruction.
Christian & Hopeful attempts to cross
the river.
An angel appears & tells them to
cross the river by swimming.
While swimming, the river tried to
swallow Christian.
Christian regained his hope and
crossed the river.
11. Christiana…
Christiana has great intelligence.
She proceeds more carefully to cross the slough.
Christiana escaped the party when they find
themselves obstructed by a Giant called “Grim”.
Christiana shows her responsibility by promising
to do what she advices to do.
Because of her strong personality Christiana was
able to enter into the heaven.
Christiana is a woman of strong determination.
She proved that she was better than her husband.
12. Faithful…..
Faithful was one of the
Christian’s neighbors in the
City of Destruction.
Faithful had not stopped at
palace Beautiful as Christian.
They met with Talkative.
Finally he was killed by some
enemies.
Faithful represents Jesus
Christ !!!
