PURPOSES OF ISO 14000
Deal with how a company manages the environment inside and in
surroundings.
Standards also call for analysis of the entire life cycle of a product, from raw
material to disposal.
These standards do not mandate a particular level of pollution or
performance, but focus on awareness of the processes and procedures.
The ISO 14000 standards do not absolve a company from any national or local
regulations.
7. 7
The ISO 14000 series are based on the British standard BS 7750 which was
instituted in 1992.
This standard also served as the basis for the European Union's Eco-
Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
It is a series of 21 related, auditable, international standards and
supplementary guidelines.
The ISO 14000 is divided in two separate areas
1. Organizational evaluation standards

DRAWBACKS
• Only focus on management processes behind the product.
• Most organizations get the ISO 14001 certification without changing their
organizational culture.
• Focus on certification rather than improving environmental performance.
• Mostly employees not involved in the management process.
• Also, it can encourage companies to meet a certain set level without
incentive to go for maximum improvement.
• There is no guarantee that certification will result in increased profits for a
company.
• The implementation of standards removes the creative element of program.
• Reduces the productivity by forcing unnecessary actions.
• Amount of money spent on paper work for registration and time required for
the process.
