all’efficacia della comunicazione.
modelli d’auto. Ricorda in modo improprio il
nastro di Moebius. Senza attorcigliarsi come fa
casa automobilistica verso l’infinito.
tion toward the infinite. The loop, unrivaled pole of attraction, rises in the center of the room,
only apparently occupying its entire space, which is instead distributed over an area facing the
show window where the models are displayed
and a recessed area, serving as hall of presentation. The executive rigor of the loop’s curves
produces a graphic effect expressive of the
common conceptual origin of the pure sculpted
shape and the automobile chassis. The ultramarine blue of the strip is as striking as the infinite parade of the Maserati color chart, obtained through obsessive repetition of the
trademark enclosed in bosses arranged with
military precision. The presentation area, whi-
ch can hold a number of seats, is oriented
toward the showcases formed of recesses in the
wall with calendered finishes, whose fresh design testifies to the prestige of the brand. The
trident-shaped trademark pervades the surfaces, the reflections from the painted metal become an inner ceiling enclosing the technical
openings artfully left in the industrial structure
and painted the same ultramarine blue to soften the contrast between the loop and the technological coffered ceiling. The logotype is also
reflected in the light-colored floor, which Ron
Arad has designed compact and white, to heighten the effect of the abundant use of blue and
the gleaming shimmer of the car bodies. The
predominating milky effect, as if in imitation of
skin color, employed to complete the scenographic effect of the flooring, had to allow for
high resistance to dynamic load and wear, as
well as the impact of equipment for handling
and mechanical maintenance in the salon. The
structure of the architecture is centered on realization of the ring whose lightness strikingly
contrasts with the strength of the area housing
the cars on display. The loop has been constructed with the same care employed in designing pleasure craft, through the technology
applied in special furnishing schemes and the
craftsmanship used to create wooden prototypes for automobiles. The skeleton of the loop

The architecture of the new century has been
born under the sign of total freedom in the definition of form, which results from the relationship between technology, function, aesthetics, duration and recycling. The discriminating
factor which establishes interaction between
the aforesaid values and the context is the final
objective of architecture; no longer function or
form, but finality and temporality. When the architecture is a translation of Retail Design for
Maserati, aesthetics and temporality become
predominant. Although the work of Ron Arad
appears to comply with the requisites of the furnishing arrangement, this is not entirely the case. The complexity of the conceptual develop-
ment, of the organization and implementation
of a difficult task, the fact of being in any case
an inhabited space, are the salient features of
Ron Arad’s work for Maserati. Here, interest for
the materials of construction is also interest in
the message that molds the form to the ends of
effective communication. The scenography is
dedicated to celebration of the trade name,
emphasizing the sculptural quality of Italian design. The salon is designed as a loop, a strip that
unwinds to present the car models, which may
be improperly compared to a Moebius band.
Without winding back on itself like the famous
mathematician’s strip, Ron Arad’s invention
seems to propel the car manufacturer’s evolu-

Le varie fasi
della costruzione del loop.
La forma della struttura ha
richiesto particolari
tradizionale, senza l’aiuto
di sostegni e puntelli.
L’oggetto è costituito
da una ossatura a centine
in materiale composito
ligneo ad altissima
resistenza, utilizzato per la
realizzazione dei treni
ad alta velocità. Sulla
struttura resistente sono
stati realizzati dei piani
di posa che hanno
consentito la stesura dei
“teli” che, a seconda delle
sollecitazioni strutturali,
sono composti di più strati
di fibra di carbonio o di un
misto di fibre differenti.
Il rivestimento è stato poi
completato dalla stesura
di resine speciali che
hanno garantito grande
resistenza e durezza
all’oggetto e da una
vernicie di finitura
– anch’essa a base
di resine – studiata
appositamente per fornire
una resistente base
di appoggio per
le autovetture e i visitatori
nonché la facile
manutenzione dell’oggetto
riale composito ligneo ad altissima resistenza
costituisce lo scheletro del nastro. II medesimo
resine speciali che garantiscono grande resistenza e durezza all’oggetto.
conferire maggiore solidità riempiendo i vuoti
in resina bicomponente.
generazione mutuati dall’industria automobilistica.
consists of a ribbing system with centering as
weft and ultra-high-strength composite wooden material as warp. The same latest-generation composite material used in the production
of high-speed trains has been bent into the
structural geometry typical of a wing foil. The
absence of metal structural elements has allowed a drastic reduction in weights. On the
bearing structure have been realized resting
planes allowing the application of surfaces shaped in relation to structural stresses. The bodies
are composed of several layers of carbon fiber
or a mixture of different fibers distributed over
the entire surface of the loop; the layers of fiber
are never less than three. The structural objec-
tive was that of ensuring the permanence and
stability of a loop weighing over 10 tons, considering its own weight plus the load of the cars
and visitors. The loop is built in sections fastened together by non-metallic anchors and
joints, with the outer surface leveled and finished with special resins which guarantee high
resistance and hardness. The surface is painted
with resin paints specially studied to provide a
plane of rest suitable for automobiles and visitors as well as for easy maintenance. The sections were prepared in the shop, taking the
moulds from the graphics executed with a solid
modeler, but the most important factor was
craftsmanship. Even the assembly of the loop
by sections derives from the organization of
shipyards and from the prototype shop, which
has influenced the models of steel constructions as well as the smaller ones of light architectures in the case where the architect is inspired by neo-expressionism. Ron Arad’s
success has been favored by the adaptability of
the Italian artisan, who interprets and produces
projects strictly according to the architect’s indications. Hence the skill of the manufacturer
discovers ad hoc solutions and lightens the
vaulted part of the loop by inserting plastic resin foam to give it great solidity, filling the gaps
between the bearing ribs and forming a plane
of rest for the plywood layers and the surfacing
in two-component resin. The furnishing accessories have been produced under stringent control, and manufacturing details have been specified in the project, such as the
latest-generation materials borrowed from the
automobile industry. Ron Arad does not leave
the manufacturer any alternative, as he had stated previously, in the molding of the loop. The
working drawings show how the aesthetic
aspect is controlled through the lighting technology applied to the showcases and, for the Lift
Wall, a system of wall-mounted anchors allowing different arrangement of the showcases.
In the project for the built-in exhibitors and for
the Reception Desk, the same process of indu-
strialization integrated with craftsmanship
used to complete the ceiling, is applied. The architect has purposely omitted using inner ceilings, leaving the technological installations exposed after having skillfully inserted them in
the scenography of blue paint which surrounds
the mark. In this way Ron Arad has achieved
unity of the composition, by favoring the contrast between the shaped technological ceiling
with its irregular ultramarine blue coffering,
and the compactness of the white floor slab
which supports the loop and the Maserati cars,
along with the reflection of the great trident, the
brand, of whose image this architecture is the
mediator.

The various stages
of construction of the loop.
The shape of the structure
called for special
calculation programs
and solid modeling.
The object, which weighs
10 tons, rests directly
on a floor of traditional
type, without the aid
of supports or struts.
It consists of a framework
built of an ultra-high
strength wooden
composite material used
to build high-speed trains.
On the bearing structure
have been created planes
of rest on which have been
applied “canvases” which,
depending
on the structural stresses
involved, are composed
of several layers of carbon
fiber or a mixture
of different fibers.
The finish was then
completed by applying
special resins which
guarantee great strength
and duration of the object,
and by a top coat
of paint – also with resin
base – specially studied
to provide a strong plane
of rest for cars and visitors
as well as easy
maintenance
