Fianco dell’edificio
sulle rotaie, come enormi cavalli d’acciaio
imbrigliati di tubi” (F.T. Marinetti), dall’altro
grammatica compositiva.
straniamento contestuale, volendo affermare
la propria realtà di organismo avulso, come
accidentalmente e temporaneamente inca-
Maranello.
L’agile sagoma filante dell’atipico capannone

The striking formal concision of the new
Logistis building for Gestione Sportiva Ferrari at Fiorano evokes on the one hand the
visionary dreams of certain Futurist proclamations, like a metaphor for those “broadchested locomotives that gallop over the
rails, like enormous steel horses harnessed
in tubes” (F.T. Marinetti), while on the other
hand it shows reference to a linguistic expressionism of vague Mendelsonian flavor,
appropriate to an architecture based on the
principle of organic unity. “The eloquence of
the brief dream, of a single setting” (Bruno
Zevi), already apparent in the design pencil-
drawings, is transposed into the synthetic
plasticity of a volume conceived as an immense extrusion, providing a compact, energetic image which finds the reasons for
its construction all within a self-referential
and consistent grammar of composition. In
this sense, the scintillating, tapered form of
the hangar designed by the Studio Sturchio
Architects and Designers pursues the intention of strong figurative recognition and of
contextual alienation, affirming its reality as
an uprooted organism, as if accidentally and
temporarily stranded on the border of the
Fiorano car testing track, marking its eastern
boundary with the town of Maranello.
The streamlined, agile profile of the atypical industrial hangar extends for a length
of nearly 112 m and is divided into three
sections, corresponding to three functional
areas and fire-fighting compartments: the
section to the north is reserved to the maintenance, loading and unloading of trucks, as
well as to the storing of materials at a height
of + 6.2 m, on a gangway 8 m wide coinciding
with the longitudinal axis of the structure.
The middle section, with stairway and ample
elevators (3.2 x 4.3 m), is used for handling,
treating and storing materials for the racing

e a magazzino vestiario al livello superiore;
rivestimento superficiale in alluminio.
boxes, to technical facilities, and to a clothing
warehouse on the upper level. The section
to the south, the authentic head of the whole
structure, which also has a stairway and elevator, houses the managerial offices on the
ground floor and facilities for personnel on
the first floor.
This interior division, although absorbed by
the unitary volumetric envelope, finds a subtle exterior echo in the variation of the overall cross-section and in the different material
value assigned to the facing in aluminum.
From the geometric viewpoint, the northern
section of the building has originated from
the translation of a generatrix composed
according to a rectilinear directrix of about
65 m: the transverse profile, constituted by
two-fourths of a circumference with radius of
9.5 m, connected by a horizontal segment of
6 m and completed at the impost by vertical
segments of 2 m, is 11.5 m high and 25 wide.
The transition to the intermediate section, 33
m long, is defined by a marked gap, obtained
though the abrupt contraction of a meter and
a half in the homologous cross-section and
resolved through a refined superimposition
of the metal shells, thus determining the
perception of a telescopic grafting of the two
contiguous parts. Lastly, the subsequent 14
m of the southern section register a continuous and progressive increase in curvature,
to conclude in a gentle calotte on which is
centered the entrance to the administrative
offices.
Reiterating the same interior functional cadence is the northern section, whose western
side overlooking the race-track is broken by
a regular sequence of ten “portholes” of access, 4.5 high and 5 wide, exhibiting a vibrant
finish in corrugated sheet iron, of the welltech type, with a narrow step of 6 cm. By
contrast, the central section, it too opened by
four more portholes, presents a smooth skin
made of horizontal courses of plates half a
meter high with flat lap joints, while the
southern end, wedged onto a base in exposed

Inside the hangar the space is marked by the
rhythm of the bearing girders, built of HEA
300 section bars every 6 m (HEA 200 every 2
m in the southern end), and by the skeleton
construction of the gallery, with two rows of
pilasters (ø 43 / step 12 m) spaced at a distance of 6 m, to which corresponds the flat
band of the roofing in which are inserted the
skylights and the smoke evacuators, reachable by the outside stairway which marks the
northern front.
