In May 2003, ASTD launched the competency study, Mapping the Future Led by ASTD in partnership with Development Dimensions International (DDI) and Rothwell & Associates (R&A) The study is available for purchase on the ASTD online store Intent of the study: Identify drivers of changes in the field Scope out future trends and implications Identify competencies for today’s practitioners Determine market demand for certification (note: results of market research are not documented in the final report)
  4. Roles Roles are groupings of targeted competencies. An individual’s job may encompass one or more roles, similar to different "hats" that one might have to wear. Roles should not be interpreted as "titles." At the top of the competency model are four roles, or lenses through which WLP practitioners may view the model: learning strategist business partner project manager professional specialist A WLP professional may play one or more roles in his or her job. Areas of Expertise (AOEs) AOEs are the specialized knowledge/skills an individual needs to perform in a learning and performance role. An individual may need expertise in one or more areas.As part of the 2004 initiative to build a competency model for learning and performance professionals, ASTD identified nine areas of expertise, deemed critical for workplace learning and performance (WLP) professionals: career planning and talent management coaching delivering training designing learning facilitating organizational change improving human performance managing the learning function managing organizational knowledge measuring and evaluating Foundational Competencies Foundational competencies define relevant behaviors for learning and performance professionals. The ASTD Competency Model presented the idea of foundational competencies. These foundational competencies are categorized as follows: Interpersonal: how well you work with, manage, and influence people, policy, and change. Business and Management: how well you analyze situations, make decisions, and implement solutions. Personal: how well you adapt to change and make personal decisions to enhance your career. It is essential that WLP professionals fortify this foundation by keeping in touch with resources that build and refresh these skill sets. They feel that they can stand up in front of classroom to train and explain the theory and practice of learning and do things that not everyone in the field can do Over 90% of CPLP credential holders report that the CPLP has assisted in their professional development efforts “Credentials not only show that the individual is going to keep their skills current, but that the individual is serious about their profession. The credential is not required but they want it anyway because they are passionate” – CLO at a major association “The knowledge I have gained has been invaluable” – CPLP Credential Holder Knowledge and Performance Impact Many people are functional experts but understanding context brings greater authority Over 80% of CPLP holders report that their employers recognize the increased expertise they have as a result of obtaining the CPLP credential Nearly 75% of CPLP holders and employers surveyed agreed “supervisors in the company have noticed that CPLP employees produce greater results in less time” “The CPLP program is beneficial for a learning professional to gain a broader understanding of the field” – employer at a major financial services company “I would advocate for a team of CPLPs. I feel the productivity of the group would be greatly improved since everyone would have a common knowledge of the profession” – learning executive at a major government agency

Project Relationships 4. Project Outcomes Total Score 12 (8 or higher to pass)   As for point values, 3 is outstanding, 2 is successful, 1 is limited success, and a 0 is blank or off-topic. Scores for each category is assigned by the raters according to the rubrics that are provided in the Candidate Bulletin Work Product Materials chapter specific to each AOE (Chapters 4-9).
  13. Professional development is required to remain current in the field and to enhance continued competence. 60 CPLP recertification points must be accumulated during each three year recertification period in order to maintain the designation. The recertification cycle begins the first day of the month after notification of CPLP success. Professional development could include: writing articles, presentations, volunteering with ASTD board locally or nationally. Local programs often align with competency model, thereby attendance helps meet requirement
