We have provided several different poster templates and, if you
like, you
may choose one of them to use for your scientific poster.
These templates are intended to help you design and construct
your
poster. The templates were designed by Dr. Lower or staff at
the Wexner
Medical Center at OSU.
You are NOT obligated to use any of these templates, they are
merely a
guide to help you. Feel free to design and construct your own
poster.
You are free to use any color, any font, any design that you
like.
The OSU Health Sciences Library provides excellent
instructions on
creating a poster with Microsoft PowerPoint:
http://hsl.osu.edu/medvis/tutorial/creating-posters-microsoft-
powerpoint
The dimensions of these posters are set at: 48-inches width by
36-
inches height. You can change the poster size by selecting File
> Page
Setup. You should keep the height set to 36-inches and the
width at 48-
inches.
28. It is extremely important that you only use high-resolution
images,
photos, figures, logos and graphs for your posters. You should
NEVER
use any figures that are blurry and of poor quality. To see if the
image
that you want to use is “high-resolution” simply insert the
image into the
poster template (typically your images will be TIFF, JPEG or
PDF files),
resize it to the size you’d like to use on your poster. Next, from
the
PowerPoint menu select “View” and “Zoom…” and then Zoom
to at least
100% (I’d recommend zoom to 125-150%) and then look at the
image on
your screen. If the image is blurry then do NOT use it!
The poster that grabs the most attention is ALWAYS the poster
that has
the most colorful figures, photographs, tables, etc. If you want
to capture
an audience you need to draw them in with a compelling title,
well-
designed poster and exciting figures. Once you have a captive
audience,
then the poster’s tables, graphs, data, text, etc. can be used to
tell the full
story.
Make sure you cite EVERY figure, data, photo, graph,
illustration, map
and table with the proper reference. Unless you collected the
29. data,
figure, photo, graph, illustration, map or table yourself, you
MUST cite the
reference from which you obtained the information.
Remember that you are a very important, perhaps the most
important,
part of the poster presentation. You will need to stand by your
poster and
communicate your story to the audience (typically 1-3 other
students at
any one time). You will talk to them, show them the figures
and tables
and data that support your conclusions and convince them that
your
research topic is an important issue that needs to be taken
seriously in
order to come to an acceptable resolution that benefits
humanity, an
ecosystem or the health of our planet in general.
You should be prepared to answer questions and have the
confidence to
answer questions in a professional manner. The audience is
coming to
you for answers and so you should be prepared by knowing your
subject
matter inside and out.
Everyone gets nervous standing in front of a group of people
and talking.
It is completely natural for you to be nervous. However, I think
you’ll find
that this symposium is actually fun and you have nothing to

METHODS
Text
Be sure to spell check all text and have trusted colleagues
proofread the poster. In general, authors should:
Use the active tense
Simplify text by using bullet points
Use colored graphs and charts
Use bold to provide emphasis; avoid capitals and underlining
32. Avoid long numerical tables
Authors should re-write their paper so that it is suitable for the
brevity of the poster format. Respect your audience. As a
general rule, less is more. Use a generous amount of white
space to separate elements and avoid data overkill. Refer to
Web sites or other sources to provide a more in- depth
understanding of the research.
RESULTS
Images
Images must be 72 to 100 dpi in their final size, or use a rule of
thumb of 2 to 4 megabytes of uncompressed .tif file per square
foot of image. For instance, a 3x5 photo that will be 6x10 in
size on the final poster should be scanned at 200 dpi.
We prefer that you import tif or jpg images into PowerPoint.
Generally, if you double click on an image to open it in
Microsoft Photo Editor, and it tells you the image is too large,
then it is too large for PowerPoint to handle too. We find that
images 1200x1600 pixels or smaller work very well. Very large
images may show on your screen but PowerPoint cannot print
them.
Preview
To see your in poster in actual size, go to view-zoom-100%.
Posters to be printed at 200% need to be viewed at 200%.
Printing your Poster
There is a handful of cost-effective places with poster printing
capabilities at the university. Plan ahead as one poster can take
30 minutes or longer to print.
A list of places at Ohio State where you can print posters can be
found here:

Figures, charts, pictures, graphs should be HIGH RESOLUTION
images! If you view this poster on your computer screen at
100% and the images look blurry then you need to use an image
that has higher resolution. The use of blurry or fuzzy figures,
charts, pictures and graphs, etc. will result in a lower grade.
The Crop tool is an easy way to re-size your figures. If you
increase the size of your figure remember that is should still be
a sharp clear image and NOT blurry. If its blurry you need to
use a higher resolution image.
Chart, Graph or Table Heading:
Arial Bold 36 Pts.
Headings should be short but descriptive and can include (but
39. are not limited to): Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results,
Discussion, Examples, Conclusions, Observations or more
specific headings that describe the topic you are presenting.
For example, if you are studying ozone levels in Antarctica one
of your headings might read:
Fluctuating Levels of Ozone
NASA image courtesy Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Land Rapid
Response Team
Image courtesy of NASA Office of Satellite and Product
Operations
If you are using a figure that is not your own you need to
remember to cite your source next to the figure. For example, if
you use a satellite image from NOAA you need to cite the
source of your image as the example shows below.
You can change the background of the poster by right-clicking
on the slide or by selecting Format – Slide Background.

Water pollution is caused by harmful chemicals in water
reduction or loss ofusing value, and polluting the environment.
Sewage includes acids, bases, oxidizers, cadmium, mercury,
arsenic and other compounds. Also sewage is mixed with
organic poisons, such as benzene, ethylene dichloride, ethylene
glycol and others. These effects will poison aquatic organisms
and influence drinking water sources, scenic landscape. Sewage
microbial decomposition of organic matter is consumed oxygen
in the water. It affects the lives of aquatic organisms. After the
dissolved oxygen is depleted, anaerobic decomposition of
organic matter to produce hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans and
other unpleasant gas so that the water quality to deteriorate
further.
