Represented Artists:
• William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905)
• Daniel Ridgway Knight (1839-1924)
• Jean-Baptiste Greuze(1725-1805)
Represented Artist:
William-Adolphe Bouguereau was
born on November 30, 1825 in La
Rochelle, France. He was a
French academic painter and
traditionalist.” In his realistic genre
paintings he used mythological
themes, making modern
interpretations of classical subjects,
with an emphasis on the female
human body. During his life he
enjoyed major popularity in France
and the United States. He received
numerous official honors, for
example, as the quintessential salon
painter of his generation, he was
reviled by the Impressionist avantgarde.”

Describe the subject matter. What is it all about?
The painting demonstrates the female figure with lavish life style .
This also illustrates the fact that during that period , In the nineteenth
century, “art was as mark of status, both decorative and there to make a
very definite point, and it carried over into how this class lived and raised
their children: The arts were ornamental subjects in the education of
young ladies and gentlemen.”
Describe the elements of the work ?
His painting of skin, hands, and feet is very realistic and detailed. We can
see the detailed skin of kid and his hair, which is the illustration of his
style and his concentration on details.

Describe the subject matter. What is it all about?
In this painting the female figure is at the center of the art work and her
proportion seems bigger than the landscape.
Like most of his art works, this painting has the classical approach to
composition, form, and subject matter.
Describe the elements of the work ?
The color and texture of painting is very rich and provides a great contrast,
so the visual focus is more on her. Also, it is very interesting that she looks
at viewer and connects.
Interpretation of William-Adolphe
Bouguereau Art works
Describe how the work/event makes you think or feel:
• Describe the expressive qualities you find in the work. What expressive
language would you use to describe the qualities (i.e., tragic, ugly, funny)?
Peaceful
Beautiful
Colorful
Realistic
• Does the work remind you of other things you have experienced (i.e., analogy
or metaphor)?
I believe these painting of William-Adolphe Bouguereau are not
completely original since he was influenced and inspired by Raphael.
• How does the work relate to other ideas or events in the world and/or in your
other studies?
His concentration on the human’s body reminds me of the early PreRaphaelite era art works.
Represented Artist:
“Daniel Ridgway Knight's
works represent so many
aspects of Nineteenth
Century painting, including
history, genre, landscape,
portrait, and floral themes.
In each work, all that is
aesthetic is recorded with
fine detail and skill.”

Daniel Ridgway Knight
Born on March 15,1839 in Pennsylvania
Daniel Ridgway Knight (1839-1924)
A Moment of Rest in the Garden,n.d.
oil on canvas
Courtesy of a Texas Collection
Describe the subject matter. What is it all about?
The art work presents two female figures in bucolic landscape.
This painting illustrates an artist’s style of painting, which is known for
his depictions of serene.
Describe the elements of the work ?
In this painting it seems the artist wanted to freeze the moment of life and
present the beauty of it which is also combined with hard work.
Daniel Ridgway Knight (1839-1924)
Picking Flowers,n.d.
oil on canvas
Courtesy of a Texas Collection
Describe the subject matter. What is it all about?
The art work presents a female figure picking flowers. Even though
the landscape in the background is very colorful , she stands out and
the viewers eyes stars at her. It seems that she is ignorant of
everything but the beauty of flowers.
Describe the elements of the work ?
The cooler and texture of painting represents romantic and beautiful
scene. The figure doesn’t engage with the viewer and seems she is
unaware of her surroundings. “Other important influences were
Bastien-Lepage, with whom he is most often compared, and Jules
Breton for his plein-air style.”
http://www.rehs.com/Daniel_Ridgway_Knight_Bio.html
Interpretation of Daniel Ridgway
Knight Art works
Describe how the work/event makes you think or feel:
• Describe the expressive qualities you find in the work. What expressive
language would you use to describe the qualities (i.e., tragic, ugly, funny)?
Live/ joyful
Beautiful / Dreamy landscape
Colorful
Realistic
• Does the work remind you of other things you have experienced (i.e.,
analogy or metaphor)?
These type of painting have been around for long time so we can say
that they not completely original.
• How does the work relate to other ideas or events in the world and/or in
your other studies?
His concentration on the nature provides realistic perspective of rural
classes working environment, which is very tangible.
Represented Artist:
Jean-Baptiste Greuze born in 21
August 1725 Tournus, France and
died on March 1805 (aged 79) in
Louvre, France “His true style
was paintings of humble and
bourgeois life; he had a wonderful
career of success and good fortune.
For some years he was the most
widely known and most
celebrated painter in Europe. His art
was hailed as the triumph of natural
bourgeois virtue over the
mythological and
immoral painting of Boucher. His
work was a pleasing return to reality
and life as it is.”

Painting of a Young Woman, n.d.
oil on canvas
Courtesy of a Texas Collection
Describe the subject matter. What is it all about?
This painting presents the portrait of young and innocent appearance of girl.
Also, the way that her emotion is depicted is interesting, it is not very and
presents a mix feeling of sadness and peacefulness at the same time.
Describe the elements of the work ?
It seems that viewer can engage with the figure, her eyes stares almost patiently
out toward the viewer. The color and texture of painting provides a clam and
peaceful feeling. Also, the painting has a classical style with the attention to
realistic detail.
Interpretation of Jean-Baptiste Greuze
Art work
Describe how the work/event makes you think or feel:
• Describe the expressive qualities you find in the work. What expressive
language would you use to describe the qualities (i.e., tragic, ugly, funny)?
Innocent
Peaceful
Realistic
• Does the work remind you of other things you have experienced (i.e.,
analogy or metaphor)?
The colors illustrate the period that Dutch influenced realism into
French portraiture.
• How does the work relate to other ideas or events in the world and/or in
your other studies?
It can be examined as a study of sociology, because historically having
a portrait paintings were primarily memorialized the rich people.
Judgment or Evaluation
Present your opinion of the event/work’s success or failure:
• What qualities of the work make you feel it is a success or failure?
Museum exhibits inspire interest in an area of study, time period, and ect.
but unfortunately in this museum I couldn’t find variety of art works for my
project. However, the art works that was provided are from the well-known
artists which I admire their works.
• Compare it with similar works that you think are good or bad.
I believe they have been the best artist during their time, based on their
accomplishments.
• What criteria can you list to help others judge this works?
in order to others judge these works, I would point out that the concepts of
all the art works that was provided are almost the same. Also, their realistic
style , form, position, and the way their emotions were depicted are
approximately similar.
• How original is the work? Why do you feel this work is original or not
original?
I don’t think the art works that I visited in this museum are original just in
the fact that we can see this types of art works with other artists.
