This course-based qualitative study aims to explore what 4th-year Child and Youth Care students and recent graduates of the Bachelor of Child and Youth Care program at MacEwan University think about their likely parenting styles as a direct result of their Child and Youth Care educational experience. A thematic analysis of the data revealed four major themes: (1) the desire to be an authoritative parent, (2) courses, (3) themes and concepts that were meaningful, and (4) a better understanding of theories relevant to parenting and the need for self-reflection

Running head: Action Research Action Research Plan Introduction Learning is determined by a number of factors, some of which are environmentally related while others are not. The approach of teaching is one of the major determinants of learning as far classroom learning is concerned. However, there has been a concern that the current approaches to learning are a little too abstract. Lack of real life scenarios and too much theory’ has been responsible for the growing apathy towards learning. I believe that student interaction helps students to learn and gain skills and knowledge that provides them with the foundation for. This study will also increase the knowledge of teachers about particular types of child-teacher interactions that encourage the development of young students. I have chosen a research participant who currently teaches 7th grade at a local middle school in Cleveland Ohio. By choosing my research participant in a K-12 setting, I will attempt to show in my research study that conducting action research for student interaction; can be a rewarding experience for teachers and can lead to new ideas and strategies to promote student success. It is for this reason that I have chosen to conduct this type of action research plan to see if it can improve learning. I am suggesting that one of the ways is by increasing the awareness and importance of student interaction. Context The research participant I have chosen is at Euclid Central Middle in Ohio. I have decided to choose my participant because of my previous background where I worked for an after-school academic enrichment organization where we had an academic campus at the same middle school. After visiting classrooms during school hours, it became apparent to me that the classes that I visited all suffered from similar issues. After talking to Mrs. Copez-Minor, who was in her first year of teaching at the time; she stated that student interaction and involvement was one of the biggest issues many teachers at Euclid Central had encountered. Euclid Central Middle School is a part of the Euclid City School’s district, which is an inner-ring suburb of Cleveland Ohio. From information compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics; the school has a total of 579 students. Over 80 percent of the students at Euclid Central Middle School, are identified as African-American, making up the majority of the student body. The majority of the student body for the Euclid school district is made up of over 80 % African-American students, so Euclid Central, fundamentally has the same ethnic circulation contrasted with different schools in the city. (National Center for Education Statistics, 2013). The demographic breakdown of Euclid Central Middle School is radically unique in relation to that of a regular school in the condition of Ohio, which is comprised of 16.2% African-American students by and large. Participant Justification (Population Choice) I have chosen the populati ...

Running head: RESEARCH PROPOSAL 1 RESEARCH PROPOSAL 4 Research Proposal Topic Should social media access be limited or prevented for young children is the question debated by both parents and pediatricians on child social growth. Currently, at an early age between 7 and 13 years, it is a critical stage for the growth of interpersonal skills and social competence of a child. Therefore, the media they interact with will be very influential in their future interactions (Livingstone and Bovill, 2013). Thus the parents can either decide to allow them to be exposed to family, school, and friends as a community or the full access to the media. Occasionally, allowing the children to interact with the media is not harmful, but it is vital to monitor what they are being exposed to and reduce the amount of time they spend on the virtual systems. Some of the negative ways that the media influences children is through the recruitment into mass killings that is often associated with terrorism. Furthermore, the persons that the children admire most when they are growing, they tend to emulate their characteristics and behaviors which can either be positive or negative for a child development. Controversy Pediatricians have over the years advocated for exposure to media by a kid to be less than 2 hours a day so as to allow them to have functional interpersonal skills. However, critics have been raised on the notion as media has occasionally been used for education and thus the kid can still get same skills in school ad through media. The mode of exposure does not matter. This debate has left many schools in a dilemma whether to fully initiate digital learning in their schools or emphasize on the traditional education and only use digital learning in individual cases. With today’s technology-driven world, it is almost impossible to keep the children away from the media (Strasburger, 2013). Shielding them will mean raising them in an ideal environment that support less technology, and upon maturity, they are unable to interact with their equals who were exposed to media while growing up. Therefore, parents have the responsibility of allowing the children to learn and appreciate the innovations and technologies in the press while at the same time preventing them from exposure to the risk of excessive media consumption. Social networks are notably the teen’s largest pools of friends’ acquisition. With the current trend in the social networks, it is, therefore, important that the parents are kept in the loop on which friends the children interact with on the social sites. However, despite social networking being used for friends’ acquisition it also acts as a speculative venture of teens acquisition of friends, as the ones in the social networks are only virtual friends and there is little to no physical interactions between them as friends. Moreover, parents are noted to ensure they respect the children pool of friends be it the once they choose to a ...

Building student trust in online learning environments Ye Diana Wang* Department of Applied Information Technology, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA, USA (Received 30 December 2013; final version received 19 June 2014) As online learning continues to gain widespread attention and thrive as a legitimate alternative to classroom instruction, educational institutions and online instructors face the challenge of building and sustaining student trust in online learning environments. The present study represents an attempt to address the challenge by identifying the social and technical factors that can likely induce or influence students’ perception about the trustworthiness of an online course and integrating the factors into a socio-technical framework that can be empirically validated. The methodology used and the data obtained from a university-wide survey conducted in an American university are reported in this article. Feedback from students with disabilities was further investigated, and the result has important implications for our understanding of disabled students’ acceptance for online learning. Keywords: trust; student perception; e-learning; distance education; disability; accessibility Introduction and background The need for building student trust in online learning environments The tremendous advancements in information and telecommunication technologies and their adoption in education have opened up new avenues for educational institu- tions and students alike. As soon as the Internet became readily available to the pub- lic, distance education was transformed from old-fashioned correspondence schools using printed materials, telephone, TV, or videotape to today’s Internet-based e-learning or online learning (Bernard et al., 2009; Sims, 2008). Although online learning continues to grow in both presence and importance, its potential is far from being fully utilized. There are still doubts about the effective- ness of online learning environments (see Hashem, 2011). In addition, a higher num- ber of e-learner dropouts, when compared with face-to-face courses, have been reported (Bell & Federman, 2013; Patterson & McFadden, 2009; Tyler-Smith, 2006). This is especially true in the United States, where strong and consistent national quality assurance measures are lacking for online educational institutions. According to a more recent report, the 2012 Sloan Survey of Online Education, nearly 90% of the surveyed academic leaders from more than 2800 colleges and uni- versities in the United States have identified lower retention rates for online courses as a barrier to the widespread adoption of online learning (Allen & Seaman, 2013). *Email: [email protected] © 2014 Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia, Inc. Across the country schools face a multitude of challenges related to student discipline and school climate that potentially impact social and academic outcomes for students. Schools are continually changing and the demands that students face daily have increased at a rapid rate. When students are ill-equipped to face such demands, and traditional reactive approaches to discipline are employed, there is an increased likelihood that they will drop out, or will face punitive measures that do not ultimately improve behaviors (Morrissey et al., 2010). Choosing to dropout of high school may cause serious repercussions for students, their communities and families. Although many interventions currently used to decrease the number of dropouts do not have strong evidence to support their effectiveness (Freeman et al., 2015), several studies conducted in the past 20 years indicate that improved outcomes for students graduating high school have occurred through various interventions. School of Life (SOLF) is a intervention offered as an alternative to in school detention and suspensions. Although other dropout prevention programs have been evaluated, SOLF is a time and resource efficient method for targeting dropout and students who have participated in this intervention over the past three years have seen positive results, including higher rates of graduation (Baggaley, 2015). The purpose of the current study was to answer the following three research questions: 1. What is the effect of the SOLF on grade advancement/dropout rates? 2. What is the effect of SOLF on attendance? 3. What is the effect of SOLF on school connectedness and student motivation?
