The Thai word for cost is rah-kah
Take a look at the following image and the
sentence beneath the image:
5.
6. Explanation of the Technique
●
●
●
We find English words that sound
similar to the Thai word. “Racking” is
similar in sound to Rah-kah.
It doesn't have to be identical in sound.
Just similar enough to function as a
memory aid (mnemonic).
Next we create an image for “racking”.
You can imagine a man with a racking
cough!
7. Explanation of Technique Part 2:
●
●
Next we choose a concrete image to
represent the word “cost”. When we
hear the word cost, we think of the “cost of
property”. So we choose an image of some
houses for sale, to represent the word
“cost” (cost of property).
Again it's just a memory aid, to create an
association, between what we already
know and the new information.
8. Explanation of Technique Part 3
●
●
●
Now we create a sentence and image that
links the english word for “cost”, with the
Thai word “rah-kah”.
We could use the following sentence:
“When you hear the cost of property, you
have a racking cough!
We have already created an easy to
remember image for you:

10. Learning The Tones:
●
●
●
There are five tones in Thai: low, middle,
high, rising and falling.
To recall the tone, we use a color-code.
The five colors we use to represent the
tones are:
–
Low Tone = Blue (think of the blue sea at
low elevations)
–
High Tone = Purple (think of the purple
heather on the high mountains)
11. Learning the Tones Part 2
–
Middle tone = pink (think of pink neon in
the urban mid-elevation landscape)
–
Rising = orange (think of the orange hue of
the sunrise in the morning)
–
Falling = black (think of the black sky at
night-fall)
12. Learning the Tones Part 3
●
●
So by remembering the color of the image,
you will remember the tone.
In the previous example the colour is pink:
mid-tone!
13. Here is another word:
●
●
We make the word
below more
concrete, by
visualising “below
your chin.”
The black color of
the image reminds
us that the tone is
Falling!
