When we look at the environmental benefits and challenges when we create urban areas we have to think about how it will help our world to regenerate itself.
For an area to be considered urbanized it has to contain a population of 2500 people or more. It provides convenient travel to work and to shops. Urban areas grow because of the convenience of these things as well as the better opportunity for jobs.
When urbanization occurs the area becomes polluted. Trees are cut down so they cannot clean the air and produce the oxygen needed. When roads and buildings are built they keeps the rain water from being absorbed into the soil. The rain that does fall is directed into the sewer system. This water is contaminated by garbage, oil from the streets, organic and man made chemicals.
People need to get back and forth to work as well as shopping. With the implementation of environmentally friendly buses, bike paths and walking paths people would use public transportation more and drive less. Public parks need to be built in the cities to help clean the air. When trees are planted they take in the pollutants and give out much needed clean oxygen.
There are several different things that happen when the population in the urban areas grow faster then anticipated. Poor housing, poverty, unemployment are among the highest. When the city does not that the public system to be able to handle the number of people that move there the possibilities of disease increase. Without proper cleanup facilities and water filth can set in.
The people of Morocco came together with a plan to help those that did not have proper homes. There were some who had lived in such a way for so many years that they did not want to move. So the government asked for their input on what needed to be done. Working together they came up with a solution that was satisfactory for all.
In The Bronx, New York the government new that certain things had to happen to make their improvements to the area a success. Just by building homes it would not improve the way of life without education and jobs. They also knew that they had to create a sense of community so that people would be proud of what they had.
