2. Pre-completion OPT
You may apply to participate in pre-
completion OPT after you have been lawfully
enrolled on a full-time basis for one full
academic year at a college, university,
conservatory, or seminary that has been
certified by the U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) Student and
Exchange Visitor Program (S.E.V.P.) to enroll
F-1 students.
4. Hours
● If you are authorized to participate in pre-completion
OPT, you may work part time (20 hours or less per week)
while school is in session. You may work full time when
school is not in session.
● If you are authorized for post-completion OPT, you may
work part time (20 hours or less per week) or full time.

You may begin your OPT only after
USCIC approves your Form I-765,
and you receive your Employment
Authorization Document (EAD)
12. Do you need a job offer to apply for OPT?
You do not need to have a job offer to apply
for your OPT EAD, and your OPT
employment can occur anywhere in the
U.S.
Start early — USCIS takes up to 90 days to
process your application — and make sure
you work closely with your school’s
International Student Office
