Plagiarism: What It is and How to Recognize and Avoid It What is Plagiarism and Why is it Important? We are continually engaged with other people's ideas: we read them in texts, hear them in lecture, discuss them in class, and incorporate them into our own writing. As a result, it is very important that we give credit where it is due. Plagiarism is using others' ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information. How Can Students Avoid Plagiarism? To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit whenever you use • another person's idea, opinion, or theory; • any facts, statistics, graphs, drawings--any pieces of information--that are not common knowledge; • quotations of another person's actual spoken or written words; or • paraphrase of another person's spoken or written words. How to Recognize Unacceptable and Acceptable Paraphrases Here's the ORIGINAL text, from page 1 of Lizzie Borden: A Case Book of Family and Crime in the 1890s by Joyce Williams et al.: The rise of industry, the growth of cities, and the expansion of the population were the three great developments of late nineteenth century American history. As new, larger, steam-powered factories became a feature of the American landscape in the East, they transformed farm hands into industrial laborers, and provided jobs for a rising tide of immigrants. With industry came urbanization the growth of large cities (like Fall River, Massachusetts, where the Bordens lived) which became the centers of production as well as of commerce and trade. Here's an UNACCEPTABLE paraphrase that is plagiarism: The increase of industry, the growth of cities, and the explosion of the population were three large factors of nineteenth century America. As steam-driven companies became more visible in the eastern part of the country, they changed farm hands into factory workers and provided jobs for the large wave of immigrants. With industry came the growth of large cities like Fall River where the Bordens lived which turned into centers of commerce and trade as well as production. What makes this passage plagiarism? • the writer has only changed around a few words and phrases, or changed the order of the original's sentences. • the writer has failed to cite a source for any of the ideas or facts. If you do either or both of these things, you are plagiarizing. NOTE: This paragraph is also problematic because it changes the sense of several sentences (for example, "steam-driven companies" in sentence two misses the original's emphasis on factories). Here's an ACCEPTABLE paraphrase: Fall River, where the Borden family lived, was typical of northeastern industrial cities of the nineteenth century. Steam-powered production had shifted labor from agriculture to manufacturing, and as immigrants arrived in the US, they found work in these new factories. As a result, populations grew, and large urban areas arose. Fall River .

MKTG522—APA Guidelines and Writing Tips APA Guidelines and Writing Tips General Information on APA Format APA format represents a writing style for most academic papers in a college environment. If students follow this style, they will have well-organized essays that will be constructed to effectively avoid plagiarism. Although a lot of students consider this format to be complicated, it involves a lot of basic steps that are easy to understand if they are explained correctly. These steps involve the basic format of the paper, parenthetical citations for source information, and an organized reference page. Basic Format The basic format for APA involves the title page, page numbering, and spacing of the entire essay. The title page itself must include a running head, the title of the essay, the author, and the university where the paper is presented. A sample title page would have information like the following. Differences Among 1 Running head: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN Differences Among Victims of Domestic Abuse and Victims of Cult Abuse Clara E. Gerl Northwestern State University As seen in the title page above, the pages are numbered with a short version of the title before the page number itself. This is placed on the upper right-hand side of each page. It is important that the short version of the title is placed on every page number. The spacing of the entire essay deals with the margins and the spaces between the lines of text. All margins in APA format are 1 inch and everything in APA is double spaced. Parenthetical or In-text Citation Any time a writer has specific information that comes from a certain source, it must be cited. If things are not properly cited, then the author is plagiarizingby not giving credit where it is due. The basics for parenthetical citation are that the author’s last name and the year that the article or journal was published must be clear within the text. A sample citation could read “(Dunn, 1991)”; if there is no author available, an abbreviated version of the title could be used. For instance, if someone was citing from an article called “California Cigarette Sales Fall 10% in September of 1998” but there was no author for this work, the citation could read (“California,” 1998). All parenthetical citations within the essay must refer to the references page. For every entry on the reference page, there should be at least one parenthetical citation. Without the references page, the audience would never be able to understand exactly where the information could be found. This is essential because a good references page will give a lot of credibility to anyone as a writer. References List The basic format for source on a separate references page is to list the author’s last name first, then list the first initial of the first name only. After that, the date of the publication is listed, then the title of the source itself is written. The last two things to be written are the location where the wor ...

Paper Instructions Paper 1 is your first attempt at an argumentative essay. It is exactly that, an attempt. You have already familiarized your self with our secondary source, the Yawp. In this paper, you will also analyze at least 2 primary sources and combine these elements to form one cohesive essay. This paper, like all of the remaining papers, requires that you interpret primary source evidence in a historical context, drawing from the assigned course readings as your secondary source. · Your paper must be 900-1200 words. · Times 12 pt font DOUBLE SPACED 1" margins · approx. 3-4 pages NOT including bibliography · Chicago-style footnote citations · Chicago-style Bibliography on separate page · Review for errors of spelling and grammar—this is a formal written report! I recommend using the advanced spelling and grammar check functions in your word processor of choice PROMPT How and why do the authors of the two primary sources differ or relate to each other in their views of African American political participation and voting in the 1880s? Furthermore, if so, what does this reveal about American society and politics in the 1880s? Both the authors of the Report of the Select Committee and Philip Bruce believed that the future of American democracy depended on whether or not African Americans participated in the political process. Their agreement ended there. What does the contrast between these two perspectives reveal about America in the 1880s? Note that this question does not ask you to evaluate which of the two documents you agree with, nor does it ask you to evaluate whether either document is reliable or biased. Both documents are reliable sources of evidence about what their authors thought at the time, and both authors have biases and underlying assumptions. Your task is to explain how these two contrasting perspectives— with two very different sets of underlying assumptions—emerged from the same historical context in the 1870s and 1880s. HISTORY PAPER ORGANIZATION Your paper must include an introduction, several distinctbody paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your introduction should not begin with an overly broad, general statement, but instead should introduce the specific time, place, and topic you are writing about. Do not assume that your reader knows anything about the history you are describing. Your introduction provides necessary context for the reader that informs your paper of how the issue that you will discuss in your thesis came to be. Good historical introductions do not need catchy hooks or buzzwords. You should really be introducing the reader to the historical causes of your thesis. Also, please be mindful that for this class, you should not be using footnotes in the introduction, as you have nothing to prove until you have revealed your thesis. The last sentence or sentences of you introduction must be your thesis. Your thesis must directly answer the prompt and also provide groupings of evidence that will previe.

Research Paper Social Issue Getting Started Set up the boundaries of your paper. How long is the paper supposed to be? How much background information is necessary for the reader to understand the social issue? How many points are needed to adequately address the topic? What is the group that you plan to conclude your paper with? What areas of your paper are going to require research? What is a social issue? Social issues are matters which directly or indirectly affect a person or many members of a society and are considered to be problems, controversies related to moral values, or both. Building your argument Identify the social issue that interests you the most Include background information in order to clarify issue for readers Introduction Attention-getter Possibly use a shocking fact or statistic Thesis Should include your social issue and main points Building argument Provide relevant information about this social issue Who are the supporters? What is the main cause? What are their accomplishments? What is the problem with this social issue? Supporting your argument Need to have adequate and informative evidence to offer support for your topic. Data Quotes Examples Facts Statistics Expert Opinion Conclusion Must offer a solution/proposal/call to action Use the group that you have found as a way to compel your audience to act about this topic (support the group, learn about the group, etc) Identifying Reseach Primary Personal Interviews Need to have questions written out to be answered Make sure you give credit to the person you interviewed within your paper of whatever information you gathered Surveys Secondary Library research Databases, articles, etc Internet research From credible websites Working Bibliography List all sources that you have looked at or taken information from Prepare this on a computer file so you can add and delete as needed This can help as you go through the writing process and need to refer back to sources This makes it easier for you to complete your works cited page Quotations Direct quotation Reproduce word for word within quotation marks “The plot, with one exciting event after another, was representative of the usual historical novel. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
