Why does APA matter?
Discuss expectations
p. 228
Work on limiting the size of your paragraphs to about ½ to ¾ of a page even though technically you can have up to one page (APA, p. 68). Shorter paragraphs makes it easier for the reader to follow. Find logical sections to break paragraphs. This approach helps the reader follow your logic and results in a clearer essay.
Ensure the teacher can read your paper. Sometimes converting file format changes the formatting of the essay (like the placement of page numbers). Normally this issue happens when changing from Mac to PC. Find out what file format your teacher uses. I mark in Microsoft word so I recommend rich text format, particularly for non-word users. I also recommend using a computer at the library with word installed to check that formatting displays properly.
p. 229 and 230
The “Other” information should be placed where your teacher requests it
Format the page header
Individual instructors often have preferences about what is needed in an introduction. Page 27 and 28 in the APA book discuss some recommendations for the content of an introduction, which may or may not apply to each paper you write. In the APA book the introduction is longer than the introduction for an essay as the book is discussing manuscripts. Typically in the first paragraph of any essay you need to have a good introduction. Common across expectations of educators and the APA book is the need to clearly identify the topic, and demonstrate the significance and relevance of your issue/topic for the reader.
Two main types of citations
Be careful not to over-cite
APA: Use “and” not & in the narrative
APA: Use & not “and” in parenthetical citations
They need to be spelled out the first time they are used in a paper (p. 107) unless they are listed as a word in the dictionary.
They need to be easily recognizable to the reader (p. 107)
Do not abbreviate if you do not keep using the abbreviation multiple times (p. 107).
Once you abbreviate you need to keep using the abbreviation whenever the word occurs in the paper (p. 107).
Do not abbreviate in the reference list.
Do not start a sentence with a lowercase abbreviation or symbol that stands alone (p. 111).
Avoid the overuse of abbreviations
As seen in the example on p. 45, level 3 headings are not on their own line. Here is an example from the APA Style blog http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2011/04/how-to-use-five-levels-of-heading-in-an-apa-style-paper.html
There are many types. Using a page break will ensure your reference list always starts at the top of a new page.
