•Baseball skills
•Discuss the
nature and
background
of Baseball.
• Abner Doubleday
invented the game
during the summer of
1839 in Cooperstown,
New York. Doubleday
would eventually
become a Civil War
hero, and baseball
would gradually
become America’s
• On June 19, 1846 the first
baseball game was played in
Hoboken, NJ
• The game was played between
the New York Nine and New
York Knickerbockers
• The New York Nine defeated
the Knickerbockers 23-1 in 4
innings
• Alenxander Cartwright devised
the first set of official rules for
baseball
The game turns
professional!
• The first baseball club was
created, the National
Association of Base Ball
Players, which consisted of
16 teams
The game turns
professional!
• In 1869 the league barred
African Americans from
participating
• The first professional
league lasted from 1871 to
1875
The game turns
professional!
• In 1884 overhand pitching
was legalized
• All modern baseball rules
were in place by 1895
Babe Ruth
Baseball’s first superstar
• Babe Ruth, the first power
hitter of the era, helped
change the game
• The dead-ball era ended
early in the 1920s
• Strict rules regarding the
ball’s size,shape, and
composition were put into
place
• In the 1930’s Branch Rickey,
St.Louis Cardinals manager
helped create the farm
system
• The first college world series
was played in 1947
• In 1946 Jackie Robinson
signed with the Brooklyn
Dodgers becoming the first
African American baseball
player to break the color
barrier

THE GAME
• A baseball game is two
teams who alternate
between offense and
defense. There are nine
players on each side.
• The goal is to score more
runs than the opponent in
nine innings. If there is a tie
after nine innings they play
until the tie is broken.

The Field
• The part of the field closest
to the bases is called the
infield. The grassy field
passed the infield dirt is
called the outfield.
• The bases are 90 feet apart
on the infield, also known as
the diamond.
Defense Position
• The pitcher (1) stand on the mound
and throw a pitch toward Homeplate.
• The catcher catches the ball if it’s not
hit. The infielders are the first
baseman, second baseman, shortstop
(between second and third base) and
the third baseman,
• There are three outfielders: the left
fielder, center fielder, the right fielder.
The Game
• Professional baseball
games are 9 innings
• Innings consist of
each team batting
until they record 3
outs
Offense
• The objective is to hit the ball in an
open area so that the defense
cannot catch it.
• The hitter runs counterclockwise
around the bases as far as he can
without being tag of force out. If he
makes it eventually to Homeplate
then he scored a run.
• The team with the most runs at
the end of nine innings is the
winner
Defense
• Force out (when the ball is hit, the
defensive player with the ball reaches
a base before the runner)
• Fly out (when a batter hits the ball in
the air, and its caught by a defensive
player before the ball hits the ground)
• Ground out the batter hits the ball to
infielder and the infielder throws the
ball to first base before the batter
reaches first base
• The pitcher could also record and out
by getting the batter to swing and
miss 3 times (strikeout)
On Defense
• Tag outs (when a
runner is touched
with the ball or a
glove with the ball in
it.
BASEBALL SKILLS
THROWING
 Throwing is the most
basic skill in baseball. It
allows the team to
prevent their opponents
from reaching bases or
scoring runs. Style and
technique differ from
Player to player.
PITCHING
 Pitching is a skill that
puts the game to play. It
is performed by a pitcher,
one of the key players in
baseball / softball who
stay at the center of the
playing field called
diamond.
Elements of Pitching
a. Grip – Grip the ball across the
seams with your index and middle
finger. The thumb is under the top
fingers.
b. Wind-up – Raise the throwing arm
up and turn the shoulder in the
direction of the throw. The gloved
hand points toward the battert. Raise
the front foot and place all weight of
the body on the back foot.
Grip
Wind-up
Elements of Pitching
c. Delivery – Make a
backward swing with bent
elbows; lean forward in
transferring weight to the
front foot and release theball.
d. Follow-through – Point
the throwing arm down-
forward, putting the feet
parallel in a readyposition.
Delivery
Follow-through
FIELDING
 This is a defensive skill used to
receive a batted ball and hold a base
runner or batter from proceeding or
prevent the opponent from earning a
run.
 In baseball, a catch occurs when a
fielder gains secure possession of a
batted ball in flight, and maintains
possession until he voluntarily or
intentionally releases the ball. When
a catch occurs, the batter is out, and
runners, once they properly tag up
(retouch their time-of-pitch base),
may attempt to advance at risk of
being tagged out.
Elements of Fielding
a) Follow-through – After the release
of the ball, continue the forward
motion, with the throwing arm
pointing to the target.
b) Stride – Take a stride or wide step
with your left foot. Release the ball.
In performing this skill observe the
following mechanics:
 Hold the glove open and keep a visual on
the ball at all times.
 Keep a free hand in front of you and bring
it on top of
the glove as the ballapproaches.
 Close the hand over the ball the moment
it hits inside the glove.
HITTING/batting
 The aspect of baseball that draws
many young players to the game
is the idea of hitting a baseball
squarely.
 In order to hit theball consistently,
a batter must take a solid stance in the
batter's box with his left shoulder
(for aright-handed hitter) facing the pitcher.
 This is an offensive skill used to strike
the pitchedball using a bat. It is done
to advance to the bases and
eventually leads to earning a run.
Elements of Hitting/Batting
 In doing this skill, consider your
grip, stance, stride, and
swing.
a) Grip – use your fingers in
gripping the bat and tighten
your grip as the ball
approaches.
b) Stance - proper stance
includes slightly bending
your knees, feet parallel to
the plates in shoulder width
distance, and bat tilted at 45°
and not positioned over the
shoulder.
Grip
Stance
Elements of Hitting/Batting
c.)Stride – as the ball
approaches, stride the front foot
a little backward to gain
momentum.
d.)Swing – after a little stride
backward, transfer the strength
generated by the body towards
the arms to bat as it swings
parallel to the ground aiming at
the ball and directing it to the
intendeddestination.
Stride
Swing
RUNNING / BASE-RUNNING
 This is a very important
skill you need to master
because it allows you to
advance safely from one
base to the other with
full speed and agility.
Considerations in
Running/Base-Running
 To condition the body for efficient
and effective running, consider
the following:
a) Speed Running – running with speed from
one point to a definite distance.
b) Agility Running – running with a change in
position and direction in the fastest possible
speed. To master this, you might as well
consider running through the bases of the
diamond. Improve your speed every time
you do it.

  • 25. THROWING  Throwing is the most basic skill in baseball. It allows the team to prevent their opponents from reaching bases or scoring runs. Style and technique differ from Player to player.
  • 26. PITCHING  Pitching is a skill that puts the game to play. It is performed by a pitcher, one of the key players in baseball / softball who stay at the center of the playing field called diamond.
  • 27. Elements of Pitching a. Grip – Grip the ball across the seams with your index and middle finger. The thumb is under the top fingers. b. Wind-up – Raise the throwing arm up and turn the shoulder in the direction of the throw. The gloved hand points toward the battert. Raise the front foot and place all weight of the body on the back foot. Grip Wind-up
  • 28. Elements of Pitching c. Delivery – Make a backward swing with bent elbows; lean forward in transferring weight to the front foot and release theball. d. Follow-through – Point the throwing arm down- forward, putting the feet parallel in a readyposition. Delivery Follow-through
  • 29. FIELDING  This is a defensive skill used to receive a batted ball and hold a base runner or batter from proceeding or prevent the opponent from earning a run.  In baseball, a catch occurs when a fielder gains secure possession of a batted ball in flight, and maintains possession until he voluntarily or intentionally releases the ball. When a catch occurs, the batter is out, and runners, once they properly tag up (retouch their time-of-pitch base), may attempt to advance at risk of being tagged out.
  • 30. Elements of Fielding a) Follow-through – After the release of the ball, continue the forward motion, with the throwing arm pointing to the target. b) Stride – Take a stride or wide step with your left foot. Release the ball. In performing this skill observe the following mechanics:  Hold the glove open and keep a visual on the ball at all times.  Keep a free hand in front of you and bring it on top of the glove as the ballapproaches.  Close the hand over the ball the moment it hits inside the glove.
  • 31. HITTING/batting  The aspect of baseball that draws many young players to the game is the idea of hitting a baseball squarely.  In order to hit theball consistently, a batter must take a solid stance in the batter's box with his left shoulder (for aright-handed hitter) facing the pitcher.  This is an offensive skill used to strike the pitchedball using a bat. It is done to advance to the bases and eventually leads to earning a run.
  • 32. Elements of Hitting/Batting  In doing this skill, consider your grip, stance, stride, and swing. a) Grip – use your fingers in gripping the bat and tighten your grip as the ball approaches. b) Stance - proper stance includes slightly bending your knees, feet parallel to the plates in shoulder width distance, and bat tilted at 45° and not positioned over the shoulder. Grip Stance
  • 33. Elements of Hitting/Batting c.)Stride – as the ball approaches, stride the front foot a little backward to gain momentum. d.)Swing – after a little stride backward, transfer the strength generated by the body towards the arms to bat as it swings parallel to the ground aiming at the ball and directing it to the intendeddestination. Stride Swing
  • 34. RUNNING / BASE-RUNNING  This is a very important skill you need to master because it allows you to advance safely from one base to the other with full speed and agility.
  • 35. Considerations in Running/Base-Running  To condition the body for efficient and effective running, consider the following: a) Speed Running – running with speed from one point to a definite distance. b) Agility Running – running with a change in position and direction in the fastest possible speed. To master this, you might as well consider running through the bases of the diamond. Improve your speed every time you do it.
