School Vision
We started with...
A school motto
(“Our Best Always”)
One mission statement...
“To encourage all children to reach their full potential”
Seven goals
(which soon became eight)
Five school Values
Eight “Personal Values”
And needed to add
(through the NZ Curriculum)
The elements of the NZ Curriculum “Vision”
(which includes)
Eight principles
Five key competencies
Thinking
Using language, symbols and texts
Managing Self
Relating to others
Participating and contributing
A bunch of Curriculum “Values”
and
Eight Learning Areas
How to put all this together in a
simple way?
1. Make the school motto our Vision
2. Amalgamate the existing Goals and
Values into five Goals...
Our Five Goals
1. We will respect individuality and cultural diversity
2. We will foster excellence in all we do
3. We will develop the skills to become confident, independent thinkers and lifelong learners
4. We will value family and social involvement
5. We will care for ourselves, others and the environment
3. Make the word “BEST” from our Vision the key word
encapsulating everything we do at Botany Downs School
B = Beliefs
E = Excellence
S = Skills
T = Thoughtfulness
So, linking BEST to the qualities we’ve already identified as a
staff as being those we want our children to have when they
leave our school...
“Our BEST Always”

The Key Competencies
Underpinning everything we do are the five Key
Competencies of the New Zealand Curriculum.
These competencies will be fostered throughout
every child’s time at Botany Downs School,
developing the attributes needed to “learn for
life”.
