5. One of the most beautiful places for a person to be in is his or her own room.
The idea of your own room may be beautiful but sometimes the physical reality
of the place is anything but that. It might look like your room has just been
through an earthquake. So it might be a good idea to do something to make it
look better. You know what they say, neat is beautiful.
Now that you have managed to get into your room, what’s next? Maybe you
should check your closet just to make sure that everything there is in order and
that you will have room to put all the clothes you are washing now. Next, why
don’t you do something about all those papers you have lying around? But
wait a minute, wait just a minute! Before you do that, before you do anything
else, you had better empty your wastebasket; it’s full. There is no more room in
it for anything else you might want to throw away. Have you emptied it? Fine,
now, out with the old papers. The good papers should be put away in your desk
drawer. Your books should all go in neat piles so you will know where to find
them. Listen! I think your wash is finished. You should go and get your clothes
and put them in the dryer. Good. Now, probably the best thing to do next is to
organize all your CDs. You’ve got CDs all over the place. Put them away, too.
O.K. This place is starting to look like a room again. So, now, get your bed
made. Come on, do a good job of it. Finished? That is about it then. Your
room looks so much better, so much more comfortable and inviting. Hey, I think
your clothes are dry, come on, hang them in the closet. There, everything is
done. Now, doesn’t that look BEAUTIFUL!

The concept of beauty is not universal. ____ _______, it is __________ quite
subjective. A drawing or painting________ I find beautiful may be one which
leaves ______ ______________ indifferent, ________ _____ that you may
love to have on the wall in your room _________ _____ appeal to me at all. You
might find _________ styles of dress beautiful _________ I might say they
are ridiculous ____ dull. To me, the sight of the ocean in a storm _______ ____
the most magnificent view nature has to offer; to you, it may be a sunrise or a
sunset. Our ideas and the way we feel ____________ determine
___________ _____ ______ objects and people look beautiful _____ _____.
In the dictionary, the definition _____ beauty reads ____ follows: «a quality or
combination of qualities that gives ________ pleasure to the senses _____ ___
the mind and spirit.» As definitions go, this is very general and ______ not
provide any specific description of _____________ _______ beauty is. Of
course, if I see a beautiful painting, I can describe it to you and tell you what it is
__________ ______ particular work of art _______ makes it beautiful _____
______ eyes. If you hear a lovely piece of music, you can point _______
____ me the parts that are the most beautiful. _______ ________ may be done
______ sculpture or dance or _______ __________ of the visual art forms.
____________, when we try to define our feeling __________ beauty, to give a
description _____ the essence of beauty, we ______ _________ do it justice. It
seems _______ _________ beauty is or what it means can ________ be
put ________ words.
7. The concept of beauty is not universal. In fact, it is really quite subjective. A
drawing or painting which I find beautiful may be one which leaves you
perfectly indifferent, while one that you may love to have on the wall in your
room might not appeal to me at all. You might find certain styles of dress
beautiful while I might say they are ridiculous or dull. To me, the sight of the
ocean in a storm may be the most magnificent view nature has to offer; to you, it
may be a sunrise or a sunset. Our ideas and the way we feel inside determine
whether or not objects and people look beautiful to us.
In the dictionary, the definition of beauty reads as follows: «a quality or
combination of qualities that gives great pleasure to the senses or to the mind
and spirit.» As definitions go, this is very general and does not provide any
specific description of exactly what beauty is. Of course, if I see a beautiful
painting, I can describe it to you and tell you what it is about this particular work
of art that makes it beautiful in my eyes. If you hear a lovely piece of music, you
can point out to me the parts that are the most beautiful. The same may be
done with sculpture or dance or any other of the visual art forms. However,
when we try to define our feelings about beauty, to give a description of the
essence of beauty, we can never do it justice. It seems that what beauty is or
what it means can never be put into words.

Do _________ song lyrics describe the way you ________________ feel
____________? Are some mornings, ________ days and some feelings more

_________ _____ should happen to ____ ____ more often.
Sometimes _______ ___ ___ particular reason for a beautiful feeling,
_______ ______ the fact that you are young and _____ ___ life. Life can be
beautiful and things happen in life that make us feel ________ singing - so
maybe you will find a good reason to sing _________.
9. Oh, what a beautiful morning! Oh, what a beautiful day! I’ve got a beautiful
feeling, everything is going my way.
Do these song lyrics describe the way you sometimes feel yourself? Are
some mornings, some days and some feelings more special than others? What
do you do when you look out the window on a school day and see a snowstorm?
You probably hope for a beautiful day, so you turn on the radio and listen. And
then your hear it: «School is closed for the day because of the storm». Yes!
That is just what you were waiting for. But that is not the only kind of
extraordinary school day you can have. When you get back an excellent exam
result, it is a joyous occasion and a beautiful day as well. And probably later
on this year you will feel like singing «Oh, what as beautiful day!». And why is
that? Because it will be your last day in secondary school.
And what about those beautiful feelings, you know the ones I mean. You are in
love, head over heels in love with someone! What more could you ask for?
When you come right down to it, what more could anybody ask for? Or
maybe you feel great because of something nice a friend or family member has
said to you. Things like that should happen to us all more often.
Sometimes there is no particular reason for a beautiful feeling, aside from the
fact that you are young and full of life. Life can be beautiful and things happen
in life that make us feel like singing - so maybe you will find a good reason to
sing today.

_______ ___________ we want to work and we _________ work in the dark.
____ _____________, we have electrical appliances to help us prepare
________ meals. So we have adapted fire to our living conditions, but the basic
principle _____ _______ the same.
11. Fire is not something that is new to you. You have known about it and seen it
in various forms since you were a baby. It is considered one of the wonders of
the world. Fire, that most basic source of energy, has been of great practical,
social and symbolic importance since the beginning of time.
Can you imagine what it must have been like, millions of years ago, when there
were none of the modern conveniences we have? For prehistoric peoples, the
discovery of fire meant they could keep warm, have light and cook food. In
some respects, that hasn’t changed even today. Obviously, we don’t light
fires in the middle of a room for cooking and heating, nor do we use torches to
provide light. We have found replacements for fire which allow use to enjoy all
its advantages without having to deal with the fire itself. We use furnaces to
keep us warm. Living where we live, with the winters we have, we need to keep
warm. We use lamps as a source of light to dispel darkness. Mind you, we also
use them because we want to work and we can’t work in the dark. In addition,
we have electrical appliances to help us prepare our meals. So we have
adapted fire to our living conditions, but the basic principle is still the same.

______ were a few years _______ ______ are probably not ________ they
will be a few years _______ _______. Your understanding has evolved, and
your tastes _____. Your responsibilities are different ______ _____ ______
continue to change ____ you grow older.
13. Your last year in secondary school is a period of change, and probably leaves
with you mixed feelings. It is a time to think about the future and to look back
over your life. For a moment, just imagine your life so far as a series of five-
year cycles. Think of how your priorities have changed during these cycles!
When you were five years old, your priority important to you might have been
learn how to ride a two-wheeled bicycle. There was nothing more important to
you at that age.
Five years later, however, your priority might have been to get the best, most
up-to-date bicycle in town. You had visions of yourself racing through the
streets, the envy of all the other youngsters who saw you go by. Then, when
you reached the age of fifteen, maybe all you could think of was getting your
driver’s license. And now that you have entered another five-year cycle, what
new priorities do you have?
Of course, your priorities aren’t the only things that have changed and will
change. Your attitudes and your values are not what they were a few years
back and are probably not what they will be a few years from now. Your
understanding has evolved, and your tastes too. Your responsibilities are
different now and will continue to change as you grow older.

_____________ get up and leave the room. This is your chance to grab the
remote control. But ______ you behave any _________________?
________________ ____, because now you are in control. And what do you
do? Zap! Zap! Zap! ____ _________!
15. Sometimes when you want to relax at the end of a busy day, you sit down in
front of the television set and watch one or two of your favourite programs. This
helps you to forget how tired you are, and it can be a very pleasant change from
your daily routine. But sometimes the experience can be far from pleasant,
even downright disagreeable, particularly if you have a «zapper» in the room
with you. You know what a «zapper» is? This is someone who controls the
remote control. Nothing is more frustrating than watching television with
someone who uses the remote control to continuously «zap» or change
channels.
For zappers, these rapid changes cause no problem whatsoever because they
are in control, and they stop or change whenever they feel like it. But for you, it
is infuriating to have a program you are enjoying cut off without warning. Who
can enjoy watching a program in bits and pieces? Getting angry or complaining
doesn’t seem to do any good. The zapper continues to zap thirty seconds here,
twenty seconds there. Zap on to another channel during the commercials and
then back again. If you are lucky, the zapper will eventually get up and leave
the room. This is your chance to grab the remote control. But will you behave
any differently? Probably not because now you are in control. And what do
you do? Zap! Zap! Zap! Of course!

_______ «pollution», «global warming» and «deforestation» have become part
_____ _____ everyday vocabulary. There ____ ______ thing _______ _____
______ people have realized in the past few years. _____________ ________
be done to get ________ to basics and work ________ nature.
17. For thousands of years, plants and animals have lived and evolved in harmony,
each one different from the other, each one contributing to the harmony of
nature. But we have a tendency to forget that human beings are a part of nature
too. People living in pre-industrial societies had understood this fact. They had
learned to make use of all that nature had to offer. People in North America use
whatever was available in the area to build their houses: wood, stone, trees,
skins and even snow. For transportation, they relied on horses, wagons pulled
by oxen, dogsleds, canoes made of birch bark or kayaks made of seal skins.
Those people accepted the fact that it would be hot in the summer and cold in
the winter.
Just think about modern technology and our relationship with nature. It has
given us the power to influence some of the laws of nature. We have developed
electricity and other sources of energy to control the temperature in our homes.
We have built cars, buses, trains, planes and ships controlled by computers.
Unfortunately,. because of all this, we have lost touch with nature. Whenever
it gets hot or cold outside, we feel that nature is playing a bad trick on us.
Expressions like «pollution», «global warming» and «deforestation» have
become part of our everyday vocabulary. There is one thing more and more
people have realized in the past few years. Something must be done to get
back to basics and work with nature.

We are learners. We learn _____ babies, children, teenagers and adults.
______ _______ formal learning takes place in school, _____ ___ ____ of our
learning takes place ______________ in the world __________ ____. And, if
we are attentive, we can learn a lot. For example, ______ should we look to find
_____ ___________ what harmony is and what it means _____ _______ lives?
Observing the harmony that exists in nature can teach us a lot _________
our human world and the role each ______ ____ ____ has to play in it. It can

nature: the wide diversity of plants and animals, _____ _____ colours, shapes
and sizes all co-existing in perfect harmony. Nature _________ be ______ dull if
everything _______ ______ same colour and if all the animals looked and
sounded __________ the same. This ______ _______ apply to human
society. A harmonious society is a marvellous mix of people and ideas. You
just have to look at the popularity of different restaurants offering foods from
countries ______ _________ the world to realize ______ important variety
_______ ______.
19. We are learners. We learn as babies, children, teenagers and adults. Our more
formal learning takes place in school, but a lot of our learning takes place
informally in the world around us. And, if we are attentive, we can learn a lot.
For example, where should we look to find out exactly what harmony is and
what it means in our lives? Observing the harmony that exists in nature can
teach us a lot about our human world and the role each one of us has to play in
it. It can help us make sense of our society, which sometimes may not make
too much sense.
Think about insects for a minute. Tiny insects, some of which we cannot even
see, carry out indispensable work. If these busy little bodies were to disappear,
there would eventually be a great imbalance in nature. There is no such thing
as an unnecessary plant or animal in nature. From this we can learn a very
valuable lesson about people. There is no such thing as an unimportant person.
You must have noticed how much variety there is in nature: the wide diversity of
plants and animals, in all colours, shapes and sizes all co-existing in perfect
harmony. Nature would be very dull if everything were the same colour and if
all the animals looked and sounded exactly the same. This can also apply to
human society. A harmonious society is a marvellous mix of people and ideas.
You just have to look at the popularity of different restaurants offering foods from
countries all around the world to realize how important variety can be.

_________ make the right decisions. ___________, however, good
___________ triumphs ______ evil. ________ is intended to send a positive
message to the audience, that society _______ holds some traditional values.
21. Today, more than ever, television is producing shows tailored to a teenage audience.
Some people think these shows depict life as it really is lived by teenagers. But is it
true?
Most teen shows feature conflicts and problems between sexes, or between parents
and a child. Rarely do we see social issues such as race, or violence being addressed.
All problems happen to attractive kids with good skin, good teeth and great hair. Kids
are almost all white and middle-class. In order to attract a female audience, shows
feature more male than female stars. The girl stars, however, are almost always cute,
a bit tomboyish, and usually more clever and smarter than the boys. Glamorous or
plain girls are social outcasts in these programs.
Parents are usually far in the background on these shows. A recent survey found that
parents were either dead or in prison in three teen shows, divorced and living away in
two others, and living as a functional family in only one show. This family is made up
of seven children and two parents. However, the house is always calm and tidy, the
mother is always cheerful and carefully dressed and the family has no money problems,
although the only income is the father’s salary as a high school teacher.
Some of the plots are out-and-out fantasy. Others present familiar teen problems. As
in real life, the characters don’t always make the right decisions. Ultimately, however,
good usually triumphs over evil. This is intended to send a positive message to the
audience, that society still holds some traditional values.

Sleeping in
The human brain secretes a hormone called melatonin, which
controls sleep and wakefulness. Young children have a high
level of this hormone and, therefore, they wake up early and
easily. Remember when you were five years old, how you jumped out of bed at six in the
morning ready to take on the world? Well, it is different for teenagers. The level of
melatonin drops suddenly and teenagers become night owls instead of early birds.
Maybe it would be a good idea to adjust school schedules to meet teenagers` sleep
habits. Research shows that in schools where teenagers` sleep habits are respected,
students are more alert and responsive in class. However, schools should prepare
students for the real world. Let’s not forget that every day the majority of workers have
to get up early to be at work on time no matter how they feel.
Do you sleep at night as late as possible? Do you feel miserable when you are woken
up? Do you do your best work during the late show? Do you sleep all day on
weekends?
25. If so, you are not alone. It is all part of growing up.
