Kudler Fine Foods Network: Final
Introduction
Kudler Fine Foods is on their way to upgrading their present network infrastructure
with better wireless technology that will provide a improved communication medium
both for the stores and employees. This will help maximizing the company’s profits
with the aid of the new systems and servers performance. The new inventory
system will let a store’s POS system to alert the warehouses that they need to ship
more products already when the store is running low in stock. This will eliminate or
at least make the man-hours needed in checking the stock.
VoWLAN (Voice over WLAN) is the one to provide all the communications needed
to be done by taking or making calls while providing the services needed by the
customers by using the same medium. Other technological advances will provide
real-time network analysis and security monitoring which will bring overall benefits
to the Kudler company.
Network Overview
Kudler’s network infrastructure is now becoming very old. The stores are on
separate networks so the bus network topology that they have does not allow
effective communication already. This is a major problem because of the fact of
lacking central location for network servers and backups or security set-up. This is
the reason an enterprise wireless WAN is being rolled out. This is essential as this
will provide mobility to the company, which is the future truss of most of the
business entities. The WLAN will provide better ways of communication to happen
such as Voice over Wireless Local Area Network.
Dell Precision T5500 towers are running Windows 7 operating system with
wireless networking capability will be installed at all sales counters. This will allow
for quicker transactions and communication to the POS server to become
available. They will also have Norton anti-virus software installed to prevent
viruses, worms, and other known exploits from affecting the network. The new
systems will also be in continuous communication with the hand-held inventory
system. This will give the ability for the employees to check on current prices,
stock, and shipments in real-time wherever and whenever they need these pieces
of information.
The VoWLAN will provide all the employees and management people mobile
phones that operate within the Kudler WLAN network. The new network
communication system will be able to call all sites whenever needed and will
eliminate or lessen missed calls, busy signals, and other irregularities encountered
when using a normal land line. The Cisco 1941 wireless router will be responsible
in providing VoWLAN connections. The OfficeServ VoWLAN will act as the voice
network link that will supply the wireless signal to all the phones in the area.
The T1 line that is located at Del Mar site will be used as backup internet
connection when the service provider is having power outage or other interrupting
issues. In case the Cisco wireless router went down, this same line will be utilized
to provide an uninterrupted service, sustaining the connection with the other sites.
Due to the upgrade of equipment and installation of additional devices, the backup
power supplies will also be increased in capacity. The amount UPS systems at the
Del Mar site will be increased to twice the original capacity because all servers will
be transferred to this location to have only one central location. If the not enough
UPS systems are setup in the central location, the network could be at high risk
when the server experience power outages.
One major weakness of the old network is the lack of central location for the
servers. With the enterprise network, there will be four servers already consisting of
the Windows Server 2008 for the POS systems, Real Time Inventory Database,
Sourcefire Management Console for security, and a backup File Server for the
entire network. Without these systems available for use, the WLAN network will not
be able to backup and protect any data.
The POS server will be in constant transaction with all sales counters. The data
that is gathered from the POS server will provide important data on each customer
and will also be directly connected to the database server. The customer’s
information is collected and stored on the database server for the purpose of data
mining to provide information on what items are in need. Real-time inventory for all
stores through out the network is another important task of this network to update
the inventory PDA systems to know how the company is doing on demand and
supplies. Again, this will eliminate manual checking of the employees, thereby,
saving time and money.
Security
The POS and inventory database servers are providing vital data to each store
which is considered confidential, so security is needed. The old network
infrastructure did not have any means to secure any of the networks. Security
could be something that the company do not need previously, but is seriously
needed to the new network right now. It is important to be sure that the network is
protected as the new servers will hold so much critical information. The
implementation of Cisco 1941, 1941W, tripwire, internal and external IPS/IDS
systems, and SourceFire management console will accomplish the network
security needed protecting the network for any and all threats.
The SourceFire 3D IPS is the first line of security that will be situated outside the
Cisco 1941 routers. The IPS will, “protect against any network and application-level
attacks, making organizations secure against intrusion attempts, malware, Trojans,
DoS and DDoS attacks, malicious code transmission, backdoor activity and
blended threats” (Cyberoam, 2012). This will eradicate any malicious traffic from
coming into the network and make any damage. In conjunction with the IPS
systems, multiple SourceFire IDS taps will be used and will be located throughout
the entire network serving as the eyes to the security people.
