Sacrifice has been a common ritual in many religions throughout history. In primitive tribes, sacrifices of animals, people or objects were often made to celestial or atmospheric deities during times of thanksgiving or to prevent disasters. Major Abrahamic religions also incorporate sacrifice, with Judaism referring to God's command for Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac in the Torah. In Christianity, Jesus is considered the ultimate sacrifice to absolve mankind of sin. Islam also references Abraham's near-sacrifice of Ishmael in the Quran and today Muslims commemorate this during Eid al-Adha by sacrificing animals in remembrance of God's mercy.
