Greece - The Seventh Mobility
From 30th May to 6th June 2015, teachers from 6 countries visited the
5th Dimotiko Scholeio Neas Smyrnis in Athens within the framework of the
Comenius - eTwinning project – “The seven wonders of our region.”
During this time teachers from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Turkey,
Cyprus and Scotland took part in the varied educational program..
The Seven Wonders of our Region Year 2 Volume 7 June 2015
Slovakia
Slovakia has discovered the 7th wonder
Turkish bath in Trenčianske Teplice
To find, the most interesting historical place in our region, is very
easy. Everybody, who visits our region, admires Hammam for sure.
Hammam used to be a tub bath in the past for the rich nobility and
financial magnates. Today it is available not only to spa guests but
also for general public. Guests of the spa use it as a place for
relaxation and massages.
The Winner Hammam
.
History of this major construction
began at time when the former
owner of the spa – Iphigenia de
Castries d'Harcourt, saw the
model of a luxurious Turkish bath at
the World Exhibition in Paris. She
was amazed by it. Therefore she
traveled to Egypt and asked the
viceroy Izmail for permission to
build Hammam also in Trenčianske
Teplice. Izmail accepted her request
and sent his court architect along
with her to Trenčianske Teplice.
Hammam, which in Arabic means a
bath, was finished in 1888 and the
building was unprecedented in
Europe.
The first thing that surprises visitors, when they enter the Hammam hall, is its illumination with three
domes with glazed holes, creating the impression of the starry sky. On the walls, the architect
Schmoranz arranged two colored roses according to church roses. Each part of the gallery railing is
carved from a single piece of stone. In the middle of the hall there is a marble fountain. Two rows of
columns carved from mild sandstone separate the Hammam hall from the relaxing cabins. They are
decorated by tiles, on every second cabin can be found a monogram of Iphigenia de Castries.

7th Wonder: The most interesting historical place
Hrad Pernštejn patří k nejvýznamnějším a
nejkrásnějším moravským hradům. Od
poloviny 13. století byl sídlem rodu pánů z
Pernštejna, který dlouhá staletí hrál
důležitou roli v politickém dění českého
království. Gotický hrad byl až do poloviny
16. století několikrát přebudován a
především rozšiřován.
My jsme navštívili hrad, dělali jsme
fotografie. Ve škole jsme povídali o hradu,
shlédli jsme film. Také jsme vyráběli
papírové hrady.
The Winner Castle Parnštejn
Castle Parnštejn is the most important and most beautiful castles in
Moravia. Since the mid-13th century was the seat of the Lords of
Pernštejn, who for centuries played an important role in the political
affairs of the kingdom. Gothic castle was until the mid-16th century,
rebuilt several times and particularly extended.
We visited the castle, we
made photographs. We
talked about the castle at
school, we watched film
about historical castle.
We also produced a
paper castles.

Poland
We started work on discovering the seventh wonder
with a lesson about Princess Anna Wazówna. She
was King Zygmunt III Waza’s (Sigismund III Vasa’s)
sister and she lived in Brodnica. This person is
strongly connected with Brodnica. The town and its
inhabitants owed her a lot. The memory of the Anna
Wazówna has lasted till now and every year, in her
honour, International Ecological Fair With Princess
Anna is organised.
We did not start our work on the seventh wonder with this
person by accident. She lived in a beautiful palace, which
was built in 1564 especially for her. This palace belongs to
the oldest buildings in Brodnica. The bricks, used as build-
ing material, had originally been used to build a part of the
Teutonic Knights’ Castle. Despite its age, the building is
still one of the musts in our town.
Pupils, working in groups, created beautiful mock-ups of
Anna Wazówna Palace. We organised an exhibition, ad-
mired by our students and guests at our school.
The Winner Anna Wazówna Palace
6
We made videolessons with Turkey
Slovakia and Czech Republic.
The exhibi-
tion was
accompa-
nied by his-
torical
back-
ground of
that time.
A multimedia lesson, prepared and presented in this very building by Mrs Sylwia Salej, was another very important
part. It was devoted to the history of the building. The students learnt a lot of interesting pieces of information but the
most important thing was the fact that they were able to take part in lessons organised in the oldest building in Brod-
nica – The Anna Wazówna Palace.
7
And a pearl for the end....
At the beginning of our first task in the “The seven wonders of
our region” project, we went to the Teutonic Knights’ Tower.
Discovering more wonders, we returned in the same place –
the area surrounding the castle and discovered the seventh
and, at the same time, the last wonder of our region – the old-
est building in Brodnica, Anna Wazówna Palace.
Nowadays, the building houses The Town Library.
Therefore, we can compare our work with the saying “We re-
turned to the beginning”.
OUR WINNER ! Palace Anna Wazówna

The Winner KURŞUNLU MOSQUE
Turkey
At our school, we held brainstorming
activities to choose the most historical place of our region.
There were many alternatives; however, as excavation work is
not finished in some places we chose “Kurşunlu Mosque” as
the oldest place of our town. We wanted our guests to see it
when they arrived here in March but the restoration work was
going on then.
HISTORY: It is not known for sure but it is estimated that
Kurşunlu Mosque was built between 1221-1237 when Sultan
Alaaddin was the governor of Seljukian State which ruled
Anatolian region for a long time. The design of the mosque
gives us some clues about the architectural structures of
Seljuks. It has got one minaret and a round shape. In the
inscription above the door you can see “1869” year and this is
probably the date of first restoration of it. It has gone through
many restorations and the last one is tried to give an authentic
Who will the winner be……?
and original outlook to the mosque.
On 31st March, 4A classroom students
wanted to draw some pictures about the
mosque as they did not see it closely because
it is closed for restoration for about 3 years.
They drew the mosque in their dreams. We
presented them in the school boards. Then,
they made a short visit to Kurşunlu Mosque
and compared their pictures with the mosque.
Some of them had similar pictures indeed.
They have talked to the İmam (person
responsible for the worship in that mosque)
and collected some information about the
mosque and recorded a short video.

similar one to the Mosque)

The Winner The Acropolis
Greece
THE ACROPOLIS hill (acro = edge, polis = city), so called
the "Sacred Rock" of Athens, is the most important site of
the city and constitutes one of the most recognizable
monuments of the world. It is the most significant reference
point of ancient Greek culture, as well as the symbol of the
city of Athens itself as it represents the apogee of artistic
development in the 5th century BC. During Perikles'
Golden Age, ancient Greek civilization was represented in
an ideal way on the hill and some of the architectural mas-
terpieces of the period were erected on its ground.
Our pupils carried out a lot of activities about
the 7th wonder: they made posters, paintings,
a puzzle and a craft.
11
We visited the Holy Rock
and had a virtual tour of the
Acropolis of Ancient times
via a presentation of the
place on tablets.

Students visited as a group the church with their teach-
ers and they learned about the history and the miracles
of saint Lazarus, the beloved friend of Jesus who was
raised from the dead. According to Orthodox tradition,
sometime after the Resurrection of Christ, Lazarus was
forced to flee Judea because of rumoured plots on his
life and came to Cyprus. There he was appointed by
Paul and Barnabas as the first Bishop of Kition (present
-day Larnaca). He is said to have lived for thirty more
years and on his death was buried there for the second
and last time.
The Church of Agios Lazaros was built over the reputed
(second) tomb of Lazarus. It is one of the most remark-
able examples of Byzantine architecture in Cyprus. It is
located in the centre of Larnaca, a few metres away
from Finikoudes beach and promenade and very near
to the shops, restaurants and café bars.
I believe no matter if you are a Christian, a Catholic or
even if you are not that religious, a visit here is a Must!
Be sure to visit the tomb of the Saint which can be seen
under the sanctuary –it gives you a very intense feeling
of peace.
The Winner The Church of Agios
Lazaros
Cyprus
There were too many places in our region with great his-
torical significance and it was actually too difficult to
choose one as the most important. Students of the 4th
class decided to make a search on their own with their
parents. They visited the places and took pictures, asked
about the buildings and their history and finally made a
presentation of their work.
The canditates places were the Medieval castle in Lar-
naka, the venetitian water system in Kamares, the ruins
of the ancient city of Kition and the church of Saint Laza-
rus. After voting the church was elected as the most his-
torical place as it has great importance for the orthodox
christians and it's so well known all over the world since
it's one of the
most old
churches of
christianity, late
9th century
church.

The Seven Wonders of our Region Year 2 Volume 7 June 2015
  • 2. Slovakia Slovakia has discovered the 7th wonder Turkish bath in Trenčianske Teplice To find, the most interesting historical place in our region, is very easy. Everybody, who visits our region, admires Hammam for sure. Hammam used to be a tub bath in the past for the rich nobility and financial magnates. Today it is available not only to spa guests but also for general public. Guests of the spa use it as a place for relaxation and massages. The Winner Hammam . History of this major construction began at time when the former owner of the spa – Iphigenia de Castries d'Harcourt, saw the model of a luxurious Turkish bath at the World Exhibition in Paris. She was amazed by it. Therefore she traveled to Egypt and asked the viceroy Izmail for permission to build Hammam also in Trenčianske Teplice. Izmail accepted her request and sent his court architect along with her to Trenčianske Teplice. Hammam, which in Arabic means a bath, was finished in 1888 and the building was unprecedented in Europe.
  • 3. The first thing that surprises visitors, when they enter the Hammam hall, is its illumination with three domes with glazed holes, creating the impression of the starry sky. On the walls, the architect Schmoranz arranged two colored roses according to church roses. Each part of the gallery railing is carved from a single piece of stone. In the middle of the hall there is a marble fountain. Two rows of columns carved from mild sandstone separate the Hammam hall from the relaxing cabins. They are decorated by tiles, on every second cabin can be found a monogram of Iphigenia de Castries. by Denysa Križanová
  • 4. Czech Republic 7th Wonder: The most interesting historical place Hrad Pernštejn patří k nejvýznamnějším a nejkrásnějším moravským hradům. Od poloviny 13. století byl sídlem rodu pánů z Pernštejna, který dlouhá staletí hrál důležitou roli v politickém dění českého království. Gotický hrad byl až do poloviny 16. století několikrát přebudován a především rozšiřován. My jsme navštívili hrad, dělali jsme fotografie. Ve škole jsme povídali o hradu, shlédli jsme film. Také jsme vyráběli papírové hrady. The Winner Castle Parnštejn Castle Parnštejn is the most important and most beautiful castles in Moravia. Since the mid-13th century was the seat of the Lords of Pernštejn, who for centuries played an important role in the political affairs of the kingdom. Gothic castle was until the mid-16th century, rebuilt several times and particularly extended. We visited the castle, we made photographs. We talked about the castle at school, we watched film about historical castle. We also produced a paper castles. by Pavel Vrtěl
  • 5. Poland We started work on discovering the seventh wonder with a lesson about Princess Anna Wazówna. She was King Zygmunt III Waza’s (Sigismund III Vasa’s) sister and she lived in Brodnica. This person is strongly connected with Brodnica. The town and its inhabitants owed her a lot. The memory of the Anna Wazówna has lasted till now and every year, in her honour, International Ecological Fair With Princess Anna is organised. We did not start our work on the seventh wonder with this person by accident. She lived in a beautiful palace, which was built in 1564 especially for her. This palace belongs to the oldest buildings in Brodnica. The bricks, used as build- ing material, had originally been used to build a part of the Teutonic Knights’ Castle. Despite its age, the building is still one of the musts in our town. Pupils, working in groups, created beautiful mock-ups of Anna Wazówna Palace. We organised an exhibition, ad- mired by our students and guests at our school. The Winner Anna Wazówna Palace
  • 6. 6 We made videolessons with Turkey Slovakia and Czech Republic. The exhibi- tion was accompa- nied by his- torical back- ground of that time. A multimedia lesson, prepared and presented in this very building by Mrs Sylwia Salej, was another very important part. It was devoted to the history of the building. The students learnt a lot of interesting pieces of information but the most important thing was the fact that they were able to take part in lessons organised in the oldest building in Brod- nica – The Anna Wazówna Palace.
  • 7. 7 And a pearl for the end.... At the beginning of our first task in the “The seven wonders of our region” project, we went to the Teutonic Knights’ Tower. Discovering more wonders, we returned in the same place – the area surrounding the castle and discovered the seventh and, at the same time, the last wonder of our region – the old- est building in Brodnica, Anna Wazówna Palace. Nowadays, the building houses The Town Library. Therefore, we can compare our work with the saying “We re- turned to the beginning”. OUR WINNER ! Palace Anna Wazówna by Marzena Kaszyńska
  • 8. 8 The Winner KURŞUNLU MOSQUE Turkey At our school, we held brainstorming activities to choose the most historical place of our region. There were many alternatives; however, as excavation work is not finished in some places we chose “Kurşunlu Mosque” as the oldest place of our town. We wanted our guests to see it when they arrived here in March but the restoration work was going on then. HISTORY: It is not known for sure but it is estimated that Kurşunlu Mosque was built between 1221-1237 when Sultan Alaaddin was the governor of Seljukian State which ruled Anatolian region for a long time. The design of the mosque gives us some clues about the architectural structures of Seljuks. It has got one minaret and a round shape. In the inscription above the door you can see “1869” year and this is probably the date of first restoration of it. It has gone through many restorations and the last one is tried to give an authentic Who will the winner be……? and original outlook to the mosque. On 31st March, 4A classroom students wanted to draw some pictures about the mosque as they did not see it closely because it is closed for restoration for about 3 years. They drew the mosque in their dreams. We presented them in the school boards. Then, they made a short visit to Kurşunlu Mosque and compared their pictures with the mosque. Some of them had similar pictures indeed. They have talked to the İmam (person responsible for the worship in that mosque) and collected some information about the mosque and recorded a short video.
  • 9. 9 (This one is chosen as the most similar one to the Mosque) by Selin Ustek
  • 10. 10 The Winner The Acropolis Greece THE ACROPOLIS hill (acro = edge, polis = city), so called the "Sacred Rock" of Athens, is the most important site of the city and constitutes one of the most recognizable monuments of the world. It is the most significant reference point of ancient Greek culture, as well as the symbol of the city of Athens itself as it represents the apogee of artistic development in the 5th century BC. During Perikles' Golden Age, ancient Greek civilization was represented in an ideal way on the hill and some of the architectural mas- terpieces of the period were erected on its ground. Our pupils carried out a lot of activities about the 7th wonder: they made posters, paintings, a puzzle and a craft.
  • 11. 11 We visited the Holy Rock and had a virtual tour of the Acropolis of Ancient times via a presentation of the place on tablets. by Stavroula Makaronopoulou
  • 12. 12 Students visited as a group the church with their teach- ers and they learned about the history and the miracles of saint Lazarus, the beloved friend of Jesus who was raised from the dead. According to Orthodox tradition, sometime after the Resurrection of Christ, Lazarus was forced to flee Judea because of rumoured plots on his life and came to Cyprus. There he was appointed by Paul and Barnabas as the first Bishop of Kition (present -day Larnaca). He is said to have lived for thirty more years and on his death was buried there for the second and last time. The Church of Agios Lazaros was built over the reputed (second) tomb of Lazarus. It is one of the most remark- able examples of Byzantine architecture in Cyprus. It is located in the centre of Larnaca, a few metres away from Finikoudes beach and promenade and very near to the shops, restaurants and café bars. I believe no matter if you are a Christian, a Catholic or even if you are not that religious, a visit here is a Must! Be sure to visit the tomb of the Saint which can be seen under the sanctuary –it gives you a very intense feeling of peace. The Winner The Church of Agios Lazaros Cyprus There were too many places in our region with great his- torical significance and it was actually too difficult to choose one as the most important. Students of the 4th class decided to make a search on their own with their parents. They visited the places and took pictures, asked about the buildings and their history and finally made a presentation of their work. The canditates places were the Medieval castle in Lar- naka, the venetitian water system in Kamares, the ruins of the ancient city of Kition and the church of Saint Laza- rus. After voting the church was elected as the most his- torical place as it has great importance for the orthodox christians and it's so well known all over the world since it's one of the most old churches of christianity, late 9th century church.
  • 14. 14 Scotland The Winner The Glasgow Cathedral
