Class Title: Let's Retell This Story
Lesson Title: The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Grade Level: Special Needs / Fourth Grade
Author: Anita Sharaf
Description: Students will identify story grammar elements of
folktales. Teacher will model completion of chart with
students. By re-reading the story grammar element
sentences, students will complete a story retelling chart with
the use of technology: story cube generator.
Objectives:
Students will
1. Recall and identify story events
2. Write story summary
3. Retell story using story grammar chart
Materials:
1. The Three Billy Goats Gruff Story
2. Internet access or printed copies for the story cube
template for each individual student.
3. Copies of story grammar chart for individual or pairs of
students
4. ActivInspire flipchart of story grammar chart

Class Duration: 2 periods
Activities:
1. Tell students that today we are going to learn how to retell
a story by identifying the important parts of a story we all
know. Learning to identify the story parts, or elements, will
help you understand, retell, and remember stories better.
2. Ask students what parts of the story they remember in a
Think- Pair- Share activity.
3. On the smart board upload the story and have students
follow along as the story is read aloud.
4. Show students the story grammar chart.
5. Identify each story element by name and define. Ask
students to tell what each element was in the story they have
just heard and read.
6. Model writing and filling the story grammar element into
chart using complete sentences.
7. Instruct students to use the filled chart to create a story
cube for retelling checking Voki instructor for steps.

Lesson Variations:
 Assign cube templates for students to fill in and
assemble the template for retelling practice activity.
 Instruct students to create an avatar to retell story.
