Recognizing the risks of pervasive low adult literacy levels amongst Canadians and globally, our research project aims to design a mobile learning solution to support literacy training for adult learners in a blended learning context. This mobile solution will equip them with language and digital literacy skills needed to thrive in their communities and workplaces. This paper offers preliminary results of this research project investigating design principles for an adult literacy mobile learning solution. It provides definitions for design principles and guidelines. The paper also identifies, briefly discusses, and provides examples of the three key themes from the reviewed literature and interviews with experts during the Informed Exploration process in Phase 1 of this project.

The purpose of this empirical study was to test specific factors of behavioral intention to use m-learning in a community college setting using a modified technology acceptance model and antecedent factors suggested by the researcher’s review of the literature. In addition, the study’s purpose was to expand understanding of behavioral intention to use m-learning and to contribute to the growing body of research. This research model was based on relevant technology acceptance literature. The study examines the significance of “prior use of e-learning” and correlation with the behavioral intention to use m-learning. Existing models have looked at prior use of e-learning in other domains, but not specifically m-learning. Other models and studies have primarily looked at the prior use of e-learning variable as a moderating variable and not one that is directly related to attitude and behavioral intention. The study found that there is a relationship between prior use of e-learning and behavioral intention to use m-learning. This research direction was proposed by Lu and Viehland.

Mobile learning is increasingly seen as a boon to universities and educators as a means of enabling learning anywhere, anytime and at the convenience of the learner. Even though the field of mobile learning is in its infancy, there is no common understanding of what mobile learning is. Previous attempts at defining mobile learner have either been overly inclusive or exclusive, and have focused on characteristics of the mediating technology, the learner, or the nature of the learning activity. Inspired by Wittgenstein’s theory of family resemblances, this paper explores the attempt to create a new definition of mobile learning that will be dynamic, drawing from a collection of characteristics that may change over time rather than just supplying a single, unchanging definition. The revised definition will be used to support the development of a Mobile Learning Evaluation Framework by clarifying the attributes and features to be included in a robust and flexible definition of mobile learning. The outcome may be of value to researchers in the mobile learning field and educators considering incorporating mobile learning initiatives into current pedagogical strategies.

Advancements in mobile technologies and related services have extended the ability to embed and experience media within various contexts including physical spaces and geo-graphical locations. These developments have been driven by the emergence of new ubiquitous communication cultures and the pervasive use of technologies for the augmentation of places, things and people. My contribution to the ‘SPOT ON – locative media’ seminar will explore current and future scenarios of Augmented Reality (AR) within the context of location based media. These are the visual slides for my presentation for the Online Round Table / Session #3 – mLearning: Abstract:The application of computer-generated imagery in live-video streams on mobile devices, as a way to expand the real-world, is finally available for the masses on an affordable basis. Augmented and mixed-reality scenarios are now a common fixture of our technology arsenal of methods to acquire information about our surroundings. This emergence of augmented reality (AR) also has great potential to support individual and group learning. I will share thoughts and experiences on how AR will change the way we view and experience learning in a situated context.

The research presented here will share the insights and results that have developed from a doctoral study in progress, which examines individual and group study habits & learning practices. The results of this study provide foresight into emergent practices regarding formal and informal study/learning contexts. Furthermore, this research demonstrates that the future of learning is already here, it is increasingly becoming more oriented towards mobile-learning scenarios and that the mobile technologies, services and practices associated with shaping how we learn now and in the future are currently only practiced by a few, but will impact many in the near future.
