learner?

INTRODUCTORIO
Definition of an autonomous learner.
 Autonomous: Having the freedom to act independently.
 Learner: A person who is learning a subject or skill.
 Autonomous learner: One who solves problems or develops
new ideas through a combination of divergent and
convergent thinking and functions with minimal external
guidance.
History of learning autonomy.
 The term "learner autonomy" was first coined in 1981 by Henri Holec, the
"father" of learner autonomy. Many definitions have since been given to the
term, depending on the writer, the context, and the level of debate educators
have come to.
 Some of the most well known definitions in present literature are:
 “Autonomy is the ability to take charge of one's own learning”. (Henri Holec)
 “Autonomy is essentially a matter of the learner's psychological relation to the
process and content of learning”. (David Little)
 “Autonomy is a situation in which the learner is totally responsible for all the
decisions concerned with his [or her] learning and the implementation of those
decisions”. (Leslie Dickinson)
 “Autonomy is a recognition of the rights of learners within educational
systems”. (Phil Benson)

Why is important to be an
autonomous learner.
 You don’t depend from other persons.
 You can research on your own.
 You can work by yourself without needing help from other people.
 You turn into lifelong learners
What does autonomous learning
mean?
 I must always learn on my own and
no one else can do that for me.
Often, though, others, teachers,
authorities, supervisors, or parents
tell me what I should learn.
 With autonomous learning,
however, I decide by myself what,
how, when, where, and with what
material I want to learn and
whether I want to learn by myself
or with others.

Definition of an autonomous learner.  Autonomous: Having the freedom to act independently.  Learner: A person who is learning a subject or skill.  Autonomous learner: One who solves problems or develops new ideas through a combination of divergent and convergent thinking and functions with minimal external guidance.
  • 3. History of learning autonomy.  The term "learner autonomy" was first coined in 1981 by Henri Holec, the "father" of learner autonomy. Many definitions have since been given to the term, depending on the writer, the context, and the level of debate educators have come to.  Some of the most well known definitions in present literature are:  “Autonomy is the ability to take charge of one's own learning”. (Henri Holec)  “Autonomy is essentially a matter of the learner's psychological relation to the process and content of learning”. (David Little)  “Autonomy is a situation in which the learner is totally responsible for all the decisions concerned with his [or her] learning and the implementation of those decisions”. (Leslie Dickinson)  “Autonomy is a recognition of the rights of learners within educational systems”. (Phil Benson)

  • 7. Why is important to be an autonomous learner.  You don’t depend from other persons.  You can research on your own.  You can work by yourself without needing help from other people.  You turn into lifelong learners
  • 8. What does autonomous learning mean?  I must always learn on my own and no one else can do that for me. Often, though, others, teachers, authorities, supervisors, or parents tell me what I should learn.  With autonomous learning, however, I decide by myself what, how, when, where, and with what material I want to learn and whether I want to learn by myself or with others.
