Audience analysis categories to consider:
A nalysis - Who are they? How many will be
there?
U nderstanding - What is their
knowledge/experience of/with the subject?
D emographics - What is their age, sex,
educational, cultural, political, socio-
economic, religious (etc.) background?

I nterest - Why are they there? Who asked them to be
there?
E nvironment - Where will I stand? Can they all see & hear
me? Is it too hot/cold/noisy, crowded, etc.?
N eeds - What are their needs? What are your needs as the
speaker?
C ustomized - What specific needs do you need to address?
E xpectations - What do they expect to learn or hear from
you?

• Explaining why and how changes will
be occurring, or why listeners’
current attitudes, feelings, values,
concerns, hopes, desires, fears, and
goals may be inadequate or
counterproductive.

In a commencement speech…
you could discuss how
students are living their
safety and security… to enter
the business world/ university
life, the way their lives will
change and the challenges
they will encounter.

mistakes affected the community
and the listeners themselves, and
how listeners’ complacency will
allow more mistakes to happen.

• The last portion of Inspirational Speech
is devoted to the need for change and the
benefits it will bring to everyone.
9. Inspire Them
• You motivate the listeners to adopt
higher, nobler attitudes, feelings,
hopes, behaviors, desires and goals
and elaborate on the advantages
change will bring. Also mention the
struggles to be encountered in the
process as well as the pros and cons
of every opposing acts.
10. How You Say It
• Use quotes, stories, and anecdotes
throughout the speech.
• Use language that unites listeners
and establish a bond with them.
• Use vivid words
• Use action verbs
• Use positive words
