2. Picasso was a
Spanish painter.
He was born in the
city of Málaga in
1881.
3. His father was also a
painter and an art
teacher.
Picasso’s first word,
when he was a baby,
was not Mum or
Dad. It was lápiz.
4. When he was 8, he
finished his first
painting, titled
“Picador”.
The “picador” is a
horseman who stings
the bull with a
lance before the
“matador” appears in
the arena of the
bullfight.
5. Here is a picture of
Picasso with his
younger sister:
Conchita. She died
when she was 13 and
the family moved to
Barcelona.
6. Picasso studied art in an art school in
Barcelona and then in Madrid.
However, he didn’t enjoy very much those
schools, because he didn't want to paint like
people of hundreds of years ago. He wanted
to create something new. And he did!
7. When he was 23 he
moved to Paris and
invented Cubism with
Georges Braque.
In Cubism the artist
paints an object from
lots of different angles all
in the same picture. So
you see the front, the
back and the sides of a
bottle, for example, at
the same time.
8. Picasso’s artworks are often divided into
periods.The most famous are:
1.The Blue Period
2.The Rose Period
3.The Cubist Period
9. The Blue Period is a
sad period. Picasso
was sad because of
the death of one of
his friends. He
painted homeless
people and people
from the streets.
10. The Rose Period was
a happier period. He
painted people from
the circus, for
example.
11. The Cubist Period is
the most famous
period.
This painting is
called TheWeeping
Woman, and it was
painted in protest to
the bombing of a
town called
Guernica in Spain.
12. His most famous painting of all is Guernica, a
mural which shows the horrors of war after
the bombing of the town of Guernica.
13. Picasso produced at least 50.000 works of art,
including paintings, drawings, sculptures,
ceramics, and tapestries.
No other painter or sculptor was as famous as
him while he was alive.
He became very wealthy.
14. Picasso had four
children: Paulo, Maya,
Claude and Paloma.
Paloma is famous for
her jewelry designs and
a perfume with her
name.
Picasso died in 1973 in
his house near Cannes
in France.
