CO2GEO® is software that calculates the climate impact of planting trees by estimating the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through tree growth and emissions of other greenhouse gases from forestry activities. It uses geographic information systems and models approved by the UNFCCC to estimate carbon credits from afforestation/reforestation projects. Geoconsult offers consulting services using CO2GEO® to support the development of CDM forestry projects and monitoring of carbon removal and credits.
2. What it does?
CO2GEO® is a powerful software tool to compute the beneficial climate effect
of planting trees from the removal of atmospheric carbon dioxide during
forestry growth and emissions of other greenhouse gases in forestry activities.
CO2GEO® includes a geographic information system (GIS) platform to facilitate
consideration about the proposed areas for afforestation or reforestation
projects activities with native or commercial species.
CO2GEO® presents the results in units of carbon dioxide equivalent, as per the
Global Warming Potential of the different gases according to the UN
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
CO2GEO® is fully compatible with the existing regimes: Clean Development
Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change and Chicago Climate Exchange for instance.
CO2GEO® can be used for ex-ante estimation as well as for ex-post monitoring
of carbon dioxide removal and the associated carbon credits during all forestry
activities cycle from seeding to harvesting.
3. How it works?
The engine of CO2GEO® is an implementation
of the mathematical models developed by Dra.
Thelma Krug and Prof. Dr. Luiz Gylvan Meira Filho
for the CDM methodologies AR-AM0005 and AR-
AM0010 approved by UNFCCC for native and
commercial plantations.
The models include all variables required for the
validation of afforestation and reforestation CDM
project activities, such as those associated with
the growth of native or commercial trees, the use
of nitrogen fertilizer, as well as diesel or gasoline
fuel vehicles for forestry activities, among others.
CO2GEO® can be integrated into the production
control systems associated to forestry activities
(e.g. TARAN, etc), in order to use systematically
forestry inventory data to compute the carbon
dioxide removal during the growing cycle.
4. Why is it different?
The GIS platform integrated to the CO2GEO® allows the spatial data base to
be feed with information on the existing carbon stock to simulate the effect of
planting in new forest areas and of deforestation.
CO2GEO® boosts up transparency
on the forestry activities for carbon
credit market, sharing information
with Designated Operating Entities
(DOEs), companies specialized in
the preparation of Project Design
Documents (PDDs), as well as
with forestry companies interested
in monitoring the value of their
assets in the carbon credit market
and with all organizations
interested in quantifying carbon
dioxide stocks and removals.

6. What do we offer?
Geoconsult is an engineering company specialized in providing consulting services
for organizations interested in ex-ante estimation and ex-post monitoring of carbon
dioxide removals from the atmosphere during the growing cycle of forestry activities,
design of projects for estimation of carbon stocks in living biomass and estimation of
greenhouse gas emissions from land-use change (deforestation and regrowth).
We offer customized services for companies preparing CDM projects, including full
support for the preparation of Project Design Documents (PDD) by means of
feasibility studies, evaluation of eligibility of lands for afforestation or reforestation
project activities, base line determination and quantification of the carbon dioxide
removals, among others services.
The company’s core business is the provision of reliable knowledge for
organizations interested in manage their intangible assets related to sustainable
development and environmental activities. The knowledge offered is based on
strategic dissemination of web based spatial information oriented towards the
estimation of the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases removals and
emission from forestry activities – afforestation, reforestation, deforestation and
regrowth.
