Crispus Attucks was an escaped slave born in 1723 who was the first casualty of the Boston Massacre in 1770, when he was shot and killed by British soldiers during open fire while protesting taxation without representation. He taught himself to read and write after escaping slavery in 1750 and played a pivotal role in sparking the American Revolutionary War by being the first to die fighting colonial rule.
