In this presentation, which was originally given at the Maastricht Week of Global Entrepreneurship in 2014, you will hear the story of how pivoting can lead you in new directions. First, when you begin to think of creating your own startup or small business, you will want to find what dissatisfies you. For me, that was access to learning computer programming for all children. Through hosting workshops for kids in coding, I learned from parents and teachers that they, too, wanted to know more about technology, but didn't know where to get started. That's when I decided to test out a new idea, which was a workshop series for adults to learn computer programming in an easy and non-threatening way. Coding and Cocktails is now looking to expand to other cities throughout the world in order to teach HTML and CSS in fun-filled workshop settings. One of the most misunderstood concepts about digital textbooks is the cost. Many educational stakeholders mistakenly believe that the paper, printing, and shipping make up the bulk of the cost in producing a textbook, but the real expense is in the large panel of experts at the Ph.D. level and above. These experts work even at the most elementary levels to create the content that goes into a standards-based curriculum.

The technologies whose study properly forms a part of ICT education develop at an exponential rate, with Moore’s law promising a doubling of computing capacity every couple of years, and global industries and innovative individuals continually finding new applications to use such capacity. The extent to which your school makes use of such innovation is, to some degree, in your hands. After hearing your presentations, we’ll look at some of the issues raised by the rapid pace of technological change and explore some ways in which schools can best make discerning use of new technology. I also explore some current trends and we look at some technologies that may well find a place in the classroom of the not too distant future, or whatever may replace it. We conclude with a review of the assessment requirements and an opportunity to reflect on the module.

Many teachers might seem reluctant to make extensive use of ICT in their teaching or to teach the ICT curriculum as effectively as they might. Furthermore, the rapid pace of technological change ensures that you and your colleagues face the continual challenge of staying up to date with technology and its use in schools. Web based communities and networks provide many opportunities for professional development and peer support. We consider the importance of ongoing CPD and explore a number of approaches to this. Within a community of practice model, you reflect on the process of your professional formation as a teacher, comparing and contrasting this with your subsequent professional development. I discuss a number of online resources, networks and communities of relevance to primary ICT or e-learning coordinators and you explore a number of these. We look at how you might facilitate your future colleagues professional development, through face-to-face gatherings and online communities.

Whilst school budgets are not likely to fall within your remit in the early stages of your career, specifying and choosing resources may well fall onto your shoulders. At a time when all public sector funding is squeezed, ensuring best value in ICT procurement is essential, as is making the best possible use of the resources currently available. Some sort of technical support for ICT in schools is now common, and the management of this may well form part of your role. You reflect on the range and quality of technology available in the schools visited during your placements, making comparisons with national statistics. We consider a range of approaches to ICT hardware provision and consider some more economical approaches to ICT resourcing. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.

From the perspective of most schools, the big advantage of open source software is that no-one is demanding payment for licence fees, either outright or as annual subscription. That's not to say that it's without any costs, but training, support, maintenance and, for web-based applications, hosting, are costs which apply to all software, whether open source or proprietary. Back in 2005, a small scale study by Becta identified significant savings in the total cost of ownership for open source schools, not only for licences but also for hardware, training and support.
