Icebreaker: Six Word Presentation Memoir
Write a six word presentation memoir to share
with the group. For example:
• Needed ideas, went to Presentation
Academy!
• Love presenting with my library colleagues
After this workshop, you will be able to:
• Connect ideas on designing effective
presentations (Webinar #1) with delivering
them
• Present yourself in an appropriate way while
participating in a presentation situation
• Use tried-and-true methods to enhance
participation while presenting
• Identify tools to use during presentations
After this workshop, you will be able to:
• Connect ideas on designing effective
presentations (Webinar #1) with delivering
them
• Present yourself in an appropriate way while
participating in a presentation situation
• Use tried-and-true methods to enhance
participation while presenting
• Identify tools to use during presentations
• Delivery
• Content
• Visual Aids

Developing Content
Purpose
Context
Audience Analysis
Time limit
Goals of the presentation
Developing Visual Aids
Consider purpose and context
Analyze your audience and environment
Figure out what “story” you are going to tell
Create a presentation outline before you develop
your final slides
Use text strategically and sparingly
Use graphics that convey meaning and help you
tell your story
Practice practice practice!
DELIVERY
Activity/Discussion 1: Stepping up to the mic
Even though you have analyzed, outlined, and
practiced, it can still be daunting to step up to
the microphone. How do you feel when you
think about the actual moment of beginning a
presentation? Why?
After this workshop, you will be able to:
• Connect ideas on designing effective
presentations (Webinar #1) with delivering
them
• Present yourself in an appropriate way while
participating in a presentation situation
• Use tried-and-true methods to enhance
participation while presenting
• Identify tools to use during presentations
Appearance
6 rules: What to wear when speaking
1. Dress as well or slightly better than the
audience
2. Dress consistently with brand/culture
3. Dress to feel like a million dollars
4. Dress in something that allows you to move
5. Dress like a grown up
6. Dress strategically
Color Psychology
Red: Powerful, intense
Black: Serious, authority, power
Green: Growth, profitability,
prosperity, abundance, dependable
Yellow: Warmth, happiness, possibly
also anger or frustration
Blue: Peace, security, trust
Pink: Shock, inspire
Purple: Creative, forward thinking,
intellect
Brown: Warmth, comfort, security
Body Language
A Few Tips
1. Open your chest and arms; keep your back
straight
2. Smile
3. Gesture naturally and vary your gestures
4. Use positive gestures: nodding, smiling,
mirroring to connect
5. Look participants in the eye
6. Use the physical space you have—walk around
and toward people
7. Point directly to draw attention to presentation
Voice
Considerations
1. Volume
2. Pitch
3. Pace or tempo
4. Timbre
Activity/Discussion 2: Looking and sounding
engaging
In this section, we’ve discussed clothing, body
language, and voice. Of these three, which is
the most difficult for you to feel comfortable
with? Why?
After this workshop, you will be able to:
• Connect ideas on designing effective
presentations (Webinar #1) with delivering
them
• Present yourself in an appropriate way while
participating in a presentation situation
• Use tried-and-true methods to enhance
participation while presenting
• Identify tools to use during presentations

Icebreaker
Storytelling (Neural Coupling)
Motivation
Timing
Ask Questions
Elicit Specific Feedback
• Yes/No
• Multiple Choice
• Specific Short Answers
• Avoid
• Open-ended questions
• What do you think?
Facilitating Discussion
Brainstorming
Prioritizing/ranking
Reflection and share
Sliding groups (think/pair/share)
Flipping instruction
Case-based learning
Follow Through Activity
Evaluating
Activity/Discussion 3: Developing questions
Generating discussion is a great way to keep
participants involved in a presentation. How
would you convert this yes-no question to
something small groups could discuss for 5
minutes?
Do therapy dogs ever visit your library?
After this workshop, you will be able to:
• Connect ideas on designing effective
presentations (Webinar #1) with delivering
them
• Present yourself in an appropriate way while
participating in a presentation situation
• Use tried-and-true methods to enhance
participation while presenting
• Identify tools to use during presentations
Polling/Voting
• Strawpoll
• PollEverywhere
• Quizzing, like Kahoot
Twitter as Backchannel
Community Managers
Activity/Discussion 4: Technology
Sometimes adding technology into a
presentation can be challenging—a
complicating factor! What would prevent you
from including one of these tools we’ve
discussed here? Why?
Activity/Discussion 5: Follow through
Take a moment to write down:
3 things you learned
2 things you’ll do differently
1 thing you still have a question about
Assignment #2
Based on Assignment #1, you will be building 3
components:
• An interactive introduction activity at the beginning of your
presentation
• A discussion question for at least one of your 3-5 main
points in your presentation
• An appropriate concluding or follow-through activity at the
end of your presentation
DUE: August 21, 2015

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Most failures- outside of technology ones- fall into these 3 areas. Rebecca and Nathan will concentrate on #1; Jennifer and I will discuss visuals and content today. This entire PPT, complete with speakers’ notes, will be made available to you after the Webinar. We’ll be assuming you already have a presentation in mind- perhaps you have had a proposal accepted for a conference like VLA and now you need to put the presentation together.
  2. We have our purpose, our audience analysis done– we can start writing up our presentation script. Note that I didn’t say your PRESENTATION! You need to have your ‘story’ crafted before you even think about slides.
