Exploring Behavior in Action McDonald's Thinks Globally and Acts Locally In 1948, brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first McDonald's restaurant in San Bernardino, California. Over the next decade, hundreds of McDonald's restaurants were built alongside the new interstate highway systems in the United States. McDonald's was one of the first restaurants to make fast food available to the newly mobile American population. In 1967, McDonald's decided to go international and opened its first restaurant outside the United States in Richmond, British Columbia. Today there are more than 34,000 McDonald's restaurants in 119 countries. And, its international operations have become highly important to McDonald's financial performance. For example, its restaurants in Europe now produce more revenues than its restaurants in the United States, despite the fact that McDonald's has more units in the United States. McDonald's success in international operations is partially because it has adapted to the unique cultural norms in each of its various foreign locations. Trying to maintain a global brand is difficult because of the different cultural expectations experienced across different countries. It is important to ensure a positive reputation for the company and also maintain the quality of its products. So, McDonald's had to build and sustain a reputation for quality products and efficient service globally while simultaneously meeting consumer expectations across different cultures. McDonald's developed a competitive advantage because the company has taken steps to know, understand, and service customers' needs without compromising its core strengths (fast, easy, clean meals for families to enjoy). McDonald's has developed global packaging that promotes its brand but also provides nutritional information, and does so in the local language showing sensitivity to the local culture. And, the colors of the packaging and promotions are different across countries. For example, the familiar McDonald's red background was changed to green in Europe communicating an environment friendly image to communicate effectively with the envir.

McDonald's Globalization Franchising Strategy By Past Excellent Student December X, 201X Introduction: McDonald’s Origin and Background “The success of McDonald's is the business equivalent of the American Dream” (Home, 1). Richard and Maurice McDonald, the founding brothers of McDonald’s, had a vision in their mind from the beginning. At first in 1940, they came up with the idea to completely move their father’s food stand into a completely new building and renamed it from “The Airdrome” to “McDonald’s Bar-B-Que” with twenty-five items listed on the menu. In October of 1948, after running their restaurant for a few years, they realized that most of their profits were from the hamburgers compared to their other menu items, therefore, they closed down this restaurant to open a more streamline restaurant with a simple menu of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, potato chips, coffee, soft drinks, and apple pie. After a year, they swapped the apple pie and potato chips with milkshakes and French fries. Eventually after continual improvement, they joined up with Ray Kroc, a seller of Prince Castle brand Multimixer Milkshake Machines, where the McDonald brothers were using eight of his machines, so Kroc went to check out their restaurant. After visiting, Kroc believed in them and gave them the idea franchise their restaurants throughout the country. They were skeptical at first but eventually agreed with it and McDonald’s first franchise opened in Illinois in 1955. Eventually, Kroc bought out the McDonald brother for 2.7 million dollars and then the fast food restaurant really began to take off. Kroc realized he needed to create an image for the restaurant that would make it stand out compared to others. The main two aspects that McDonald’s adopted early on that made the chain restaurant stand out is the famous double arch “M” was created along with assigning Ronald McDonald to be the face for the restaurant. Nowadays, it does not matter where you are visiting a McDonalds because it will be a very similar experience regardless of the location. With that being said, that highlights the vision of Ray Kroc, which helps with their strategic approach and their global franchising for continuous success and growth within their fast food chain. Discover the Kisan Call Centre: Your Gateway to Agricultural Assistance KISAN CALL CENTRE In order to harness the potential of ICT in Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare launched the scheme “Kisan Call Centres” (KCCs) on January 21, 2004. Main aim of the scheme is to answer farmers’ queries on a telephone call in their own language. These call centres are working in 21 different locations in the country covering all the States and UTs. A countrywide common eleven digit Toll Free Number 1800-180-1551 has been allotted for Kisan Call Centre. This number is accessible through mobile phones and landlines of all telecom networks including private service providers. Replies to the farmers’ queries are given in 22 local languages. Kisan Call Centre services are available from 6.00 AM to 10.00 PM on all seven days of the week at each KCC location. Kisan Call Centre agents known as Farm Tele Advisors (FTAs), who are graduate or above (i.e. PG or Doctorate) in Agriculture or allied sectors (Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Poultry, Bee-Keeping, Sericulture, Aquaculture, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Marketing, Bio-Technology, Home Science, etc.) and possess excellent communication skills in respective local language. Queries which cannot be answered by FTAs are transferred to higher level experts. These experts are Subject Matter Specialists (SMSs) of State Departments of Agriculture (SDAs), ICAR Institutes, KVKs and State Agricultural Universities (SAUs). A Kisan Knowledge Management System (KKMS) has been developed to capture all the details of the caller and sending gist of answer given through SMS. KKMS has its independent website : http://dackkms.gov.in. The KCC, FTAs working at various KCC locations throughout the country have access to this website through their specific IDs and password provided to them.
