The united states fought Britain in this war over infringement of trading rights and the fact that the british kept stealing our ships and made american sailors work and fight on british ships. The u.s. couldn’t fight back because we had such a bad naval force that we couldn’t do anything about it, so in 1812 James Madison was the first president to ask congress to declare war. In 1814 the war ended with the treaty of ghent
Due to the very weak american navy, the british were able to push the u.s. around with their much stronger navy. The british were capturing american ships and forcing the sailors to work for british ships and this made the americans very angry. Also during this time period france and britain were having to deal with the frenchrevoulution and the napoleonic wars that resulted from this revoulution, the united states was hurt because of france and britian not wanting the other country to trade with the u.s.
The British practice of impressment (capturing sailors and forcing them to work on British ships even though they might be U.S. citizens) was a big enough problem for the Americans that we almost went to war with them but ThomasJefferson chose economic pressure over military, so he had congress pass the Embargo act which was supposed to hurt the British and French but in reality it hurt the Americans much more than it did the French or the British. Jefferson tried to fix this problem but just ended up passing a law that opened up trade again. When James Madison came into power he reinstated non-intercourse against Britain which was a main factor that led to war. There were also tensions in the Northwest Territory in America between the British, the Americans, and the Native Americans. The Native Americans were convinced that the only way to stop the Americans from continuing to push their land holdings further west was to ally with the British who would be able to stop America.During the Napoleonic era Britain was trying to block America from trading with the French and the French were trying to block America from trading with the British, this led to a loose – loose situation for the Americans.
The states declared war on britain, but we had already been fighting some with the indians before the war started, and the indians were on britain’s side because they thought that the british could help prevent the americans from spreading out to the west.

December 24 1814 – both countries agree to return to the status quo they were used to before the war startedJanuary 1815 - Andrew Jackson wins a major battle. This battle was fought after the treaty of ghent was signed and the war was offically over when this battle was fought. This win will help him on his way to winning the presidency
Negotiations started in august of 1814 in ghent (modern day belgium) between the united states and britainThe treaty never fixed the problems that were the cause of this war, the main reason it ended was that britain was so worn out that they just kind of wanted to stop fighting, and the americans thought that would be good enough to claim a win in the fight against Britain.
When the British were trying to burn the White house, Dolly Madison, the first lady, declined to leave the white house until a portrait of George Washington was rescued from the potential flames, the portrait is still around and it is in the white house still. The lyrics to the star spangled banner were written by Francis Scott Key during the siege of fort mchenry when the americans held off the british and he was inspired by the americans that were fighting and he wrote this song that became our national anthem. The battle of new orleans happened after the peace treaty was signed, the treaty was signed in dec. of 1814 and the battle of new orleans occurred in jan. of 1815. shows how slow news still travled then
