2. Because a majority of Reagan County elementary students are classified as economically disadvantaged, the students are not exposed to the same opportunities and experiences of that of the other children their age. One of the main goals of the CIP and those described in the SBDM committee are how to reach our students through the use of technology. A lot of discussion has occurred on the topic of “virtual fieldtrips”. Reagan County elementary principal Ty Stevens says “our students don’t get to go anywhere or do anything because their parents can’t afford it.” By allowing our students to take part in online fieldtrips, we are capable of providing them with the necessary experiences they need to succeed in school. Also, through the use of technology, we have ensured that our students are going to be engaged and interested in the content that we are teaching them. Understanding that our students today are “in love with technology” is something that we as educators must realize and ensure that we incorporate in our instruction. Providing our students with the “virtual fieldtrip” will guarantee that our students are provided with the opportunities that they are lacking in their “real” lives.
3. According to the STaR Chart from 2007-2008, Reagan County elementary is classified as advanced in all areas of measure. Unfortunately, according the STaR Chart levels over the last three years, Reagan County is dropping in their numbered rankings. As part of the SBDM committee, we have taken this into consideration when deciding what we need to do as a school district. Believing that technology is not being used in all classrooms as it should be, more authority to ensure implementation on campus is needed. Also, more training is needed to provide teachers with the confidence and knowledge necessary to provide these students with the technology opportunities required according to local, state, and national standards.
