 Ports serve as an important
transportation hubs that facilitate the
movement of goods to businesses in
local communities and worldwide
markets.
 As illustrated in the figure below,
ports can connect goods to consumers
through our highway system,
railroads, air transit and domestic
marine highways (water
transportation routes).
 These ports include seaports as well
as smaller intercoastal and inland
ports that facilitate movement of
goods between the seaports and local
communities.
 Intermodal Transportation refers to
movements of cargo between different
kinds of transport modes.
3
 The history of Chittagong Port can be traced back to the 4th
century BC.
 During the 9th-15th century AD, Chittagong was known as
‘SHETGANG’ to early European mariners.
 In the 16th century, Portuguese sailors took great interest in the
locality around Chittagong which was then popularly known as
‘PORTE GRANDE’.
 The port was established at its present location in 1887.
 By 1910, four jetties were constructed to handle 0.5 million tons of
cargo annually. Since then the port has grown gradually to its
present shape.
 The Port of Chittagong is the
principal Port of the People's
Republic of Bangladesh.
 It is situated on the right bank of
the river Karnafuli at a distance of
about 9 nautical miles from the
shore line of the Bay of Bengal.
 71st busiest port in the world
 It is a Deepwater seaport
 Dominated by trade in
containerized manufactured
products (especially garments, jute
and jute goods, leather products,
fertilizers and seafood), raw
materials and to a lesser extent
passengers.
 The Chittagong Port Authority
(CPA) is a basic services provider
 The Chittagong Port Authority
(CPA) celebrated the 130th
founding anniversary at April 27.

Bangladesh. The geographic location of this port creates the
opportunity of easy and cost-effective foreign trade to be carried
out through this port with all the South Asian countries as well as
other Asian countries. Besides, sufficient and low-cost labour is
readily available here. For these reasons, Chittagong Port holds
much potential as a highly promising regional sea-port.
 The foreign trade accounts for approximately 38% of GDP. The
average maritime dependency factor of the country is about 33%
(last five years).
 Chittagong Sea port handles 92% of import-export trade of the
country. To meet increasing consumer demands, more ships are
calling at Chittagong seaports than ever before and the ships are
getting bigger.
 Chittagong Port is playing significant role in creating employment
for local and international ,also support employment in related
sectors such as trucking and rail transportation.
7
