In the last class you analyzed the four major characters in Lord of the Flies
in a cooperative Jigsaw activity. Today you will participate in your first
literature circle and begin to discuss symbolism in the novel as a class.

4. Earlier in the year we discussed symbolism, when authors
use a specific object in a text to represent a larger idea. In
your journal, identify one object you’ve encountered in
Lord of the Flies so far that you think might be a symbol.
How is this object important to the boys? What is its
purpose in the boys’ society? What do you think this
object represents?
